The Acne Thread

ohh thanks for that.
all this preparation is a bit annoying but worth it hopefully
my skin isnt really bad(some people dont know why im starting accutane), but i'll be glad to get rid of these breakouts!!
thanks johnny:flower:

My friend had pretty bad acne and then she started taking birth control medicine (not sure exactly what, but yeah...) and her face really cleared up. Good luck to all with your medicines!

I must resist the temptation to squeeze blackheads and whiteheads AHHH :ninja:

i got birth control today, so i can start accutane soon
do i need bloodwork to get started on accutane??

No,you don't need boodwork before starting using the accutane, you will need it in one month after use to see if it doesn't effect you negatively,if all is Ok after one month of use,so you will be quiet to continue using it for 5-6 months to resolve the problem of acne defenitly.

Yeah that's an idea..... but I still feel that i'm too young to get that done (16) and it might be too drastic and cause pre-mature skin ageing? but thanks for your suggestion:flower:

Well if you are only 16,so i think it's a bit early to make a chimical peeling to remove scars, maybe you can wait for 3 or 4 years to be sure that your acne won't reappear,or maybe you can use now some creams with Glycolic acid the best one i know is "Neostrata",it will remove your scars after 4-5 months of use.

Think in case of use of both the chimical peeling or of the creams with the glycolic acid to protect your skin with a good total screen cream, then you won't have any problem of premature skin aging.

I heard micro dermabrasion will help.

I used to have good skin, though now I have worser skin than you; my cheeks and chin are covered in red, brown and purple blotches. I don't even touch any of the spots and they just turn into these ugly blotches. I never wear make-up (even when I do to a special event, it is only some eye shadow and lipstick) and I wash my face twice a day, use spot treatment and moisturiser. With other people they will have a spot, it will go and their skin is perfectly clear, again. With me they transform into ugly blotches!

I have been using Skin Doctors Fade Away Pigmentation Lotion. It has worked, but more spots and more blotches appear faster than the lotion works. So, I am going to try this micro dermabrasion thing.

I've been lucky with very, very clear skin my whole life. It's thin, pale, Irish skin, so it's not creamy and gorgeous like yours, but I never really broke out. One pimple on my forehead at times back in high school, and that's it, nothing for the last ten years. Diet doesn't affect it, drinking doesn't (I don't smoke, and am not around smokers), but the one thing that does start to make it look like it might break out is actually a change in detergeants or not washing my sheets frequently enough (at least once a week). It could be late hormonal changes or stress, but with the change in environments, I'm wondering if you're reacting to a chemical/fragrance you're not used to in your linens, or with college being so busy, you're letting the sheets go longer than at home. Bacteria builds up, even if you shower before bed, and combined with stress on your body (I'm talking things like less sleep/more erratic meals, not just all that comes with being new to college) it could be causing a reaction.

My aunt is a PA for a dermotologist and has suggested trying something like Tide Free and Clear, using a new pillowcase every night, and being very very careful with what you put on until it clears up. I know it's embarassing for people to see it; but wearing things like foundation can clog pores, suffocate the skin, and make the problem worse if you don't give it a chance to heal.

I dont know where you live but the same thing happened to my college roomate when she moved to NYC. The pollution and the water wreaked havoc on her skin.

College food Also, is notoriously bad for you and that might affect your skin

In reply to what everyone has suggested,
I drink in college but I drank all throughout highschool so I don't think it's that. I also never smoked. However, I did start smoking weed in college (stopped now) and I think that may have had something to do with it because I later read that marijuana increases testosterone levels in females.

I don't really want to go on Accutane, birth control or oral antibiotics because I don't like taking things internally or messing around unnaturally with my hormones. I got back from the derm yesterday and he put me on Benzaclin in the morning and Retin-A Micro at night. He also said I can get laser treatments to get rid of the marks from previous blemishes.

I've had Roaccutan since October, and I can't see any results besides dry skin. I know diet makes a difference, but I've been having troubles with my eating, meaning that I have eaten enormous amounts of crap food about 2-5 times a week, and can't stop, it's like an addiction ( luckily I haven't put on pounds YET ). My dermatologist said that Roaccutan would work whatever I would eat/do, but I'm scared...I'm officially the ugliest person I know. I look like the geek teen in movies, except that I'm not smart. Sorry for being so selfish saying that, but frankly that's how I've felt for years and years...And I can't find a way out. I've had acne since I was eight, so it has been a long, long time ( I'm 16 ).

Does a crap diet have an effect on the results Roaccutan should give me? Has anybody been in a same kind of state I'm in, with eating and all? I want to find a way out...

it has been proven by many dermatologists that diet does not lead to acne breakouts. however, they have said that your body may be sensitive to certain foods. for example, if i have too much pure suger my body reacts to it. it all sounds hypocritical, but supposedly you arent what you eat.
also, i had a friend who got acne around the same age as you, eight years old. and she went on accutane and surprisingly even that didnt work for her. but this year her skin is AMAZING. she had really horrible cystic acne and you cant even tell now. even the scarring is incredible, only like 2 or 3 smallll scars. her pores are invisible and her oil is gone. i asked her about it, and she said she is using Lutera Birth control, something like deoxycycline, and tetracycline. i think i made a mess of the last two names, but it was something close. anyways, her skin was verrry hard to cure, but this regimen cleared it.
best of luck to you :flower:

Anyone know if the Clinique 3-Step line is any good?

It's good maybe for moisturizing your skin, but will do definitly nothing to your acne if you have one,I think while trying to treat the acne, you should avoid all cosmitical creams and lotions, they could encrease the problem.

My skin isn't oily and even though I definetily have acne, it isn't as bad as the worse cases. My zits/black- or whiteheads aren't really "deep", and I've been told that I won't have any scarring. So how old was your friend when her acne disappeared? I'm really scared, since I would love this to finally help, because I have no self-confidence and my acne keeps me from doing things other people can do. I'm going to England for three weeks this summer, and past two summers have been sh*tty and rough, and I would want to finally be happy. If Roaccutan won't work for me, my trip is going to be ruined. Sorry to sound like such a kid, but it really ruins everything, and has always done so.

And I have already been on Tetracyclin.

Thanks for answering.:flower:

well this past summer her acne was bad as ever, and then this december it was completely cleared of anything. she said it was mostly the birth control because it kept her hormones in check. its amazing the transformation she went through! it was the only thing that worked for her

p.s she is 17 right now

My dermatologue told me that the combination of accutane and birth control is a good thing for acne treatement, just don't use any lotions of creams for acne while taking the accutane, and I am sure it would be perfect, maybe you need time, but for sure it will be treated.GoodLuck.

Thanks. Besides moisturizing, does the system also do a good job of cleansing the skin?

ive had acne before and my face has more or less cleared up, though what's annoying me is that uNDERNEATh my skin there are still like slight redish dots that arent exactly pimples either.
hoow can i get back my clean radiant skin :-(

I had that too ^. My doctor said it was a form of scarring and that it would eventually go away, but she put me on an antibiotic that helped them clear up ALOT faster. On the prescription label it says " IC SMZ/TMP Double Str Tab" So i guess thats what its called, lol. But it helped alot with those really annoying red marks!

wow i'm gonna have an Easy time trying to pronounce that to my dermatologist!:D
