The Acne Thread

hmm. i think i'll eventually give proactiv a try... although i do think maybe i just have a hormone imbalance that's the root of all my skin problems :(

As for Proactiv, I can't say whether or not to use it because it benzoyl peroxide works really well on a lot of acne situations.

BUTbenzoyl peroxide treatments should be kind of a last resort since it's a pro-oxidant and can prematurely age your skin. So you'll be treating your acne but aging it.

what?! it does?! how often should i use it then and whats a better alternative thatsas effective? 2 percent salycilic is like a bandaid for a gunshot in my case.

^^
Yep, it does. There are more than a few countries that have limited it's use and have even banned it.

Your skin sounds like mine, Salycilic Acid is a joke for me. It's like water, no results.

I like sulfur products - DFF has a great sulfur mask you can use to spot treat or as an all over treatment. Bye Bye Blemish at the drugstore is also a sulfur product. It has Salycilic Acid in it but it's really the sulfur that does the work for me. You can by sulfur soaps at health food stores and eBay.

If your skin likes Glycolic Acid, that's another option. My skin hates it, it breaks out terribly from Glycolics.

What products do you use to wash your face?... (And I bet you don't have scars right).

okay wait, so if i go to wlamart what do i ask for? a sulfur what? brandwise and name i mean.

BP can bleach clothing and hair - but it can lead to more scarring on some skin types because of the oxidation. Plus the aging concerns.

I use Adult Acnomel, it's 8% sulfur. It's skin tinted so it doesn't even look like you are wearing a treatment. Also Bye Bye Blemish is a good one.

If you go to Walmart, they should have these on the shelf. If not, I know you can go to the pharmacy counter and they can order you sulfur products through a catalog - takes only about a 3 days to get them there.

the DDF sulfur mask has definitely been the best thing to ever touch my faceee! i always tend to break out when i'm stressed, even with those really difficult under the skin zits, but i just slather a huge clump of this stuff on and leave it on overnight for two nights in row and everything is goneee by the second morning

it appears that la roche posay isn't selled here in Ukraine! :( :( :(
any advice on what should I buy instead as good as la roche posay? maybe biotherm?

melfreya, is this just cream that u have to use for 4-6 months to get some effect? or u have to use same cleanser/toner for 4-6 months?

i use just the cream and the topical one for the spots from la roche effeclar line, the cleanser varies from time to time and i don't use toner:flower:

Okay so obviously Proactiv is not the way to go...

Does anyone here have acne scars (red circle ones) and some active acne? I have both on my cheeks and don't know much about regimens or what products I can use. I made an appt with my dermatologist and the earliest day to see her is in May! So if anyone informed has any idea what I can do in the meantime please help.

I would really, really suggest Tazorac. I had a prescription for it years ago but gave up on it because I thought it was breaking me out. Then I got some new samples and gave it another try because I read about Short Contact Therapy. This is when you apply the Tazorac, leave it on for about ten minutes and wash it off. Leaving it on all night like I was previously was the reason I was breaking out. The SCT really, really, really helped my scars.

Combined with a high SPF & PPD sunscreen, they are barely visable, and invisable with makeup.

I forgot to add: Yes, Tazorac is prescription only. But a LOT of ladies over on Makeupalley use a site called EverydayChemist. They do not require a prescription and the tubes are only about $4 each (dirt cheap). The shipping is pricey because it's coming from India but they say it's exactly the same. Maybe you could order that and see how it works for you. Shipping is about a week.

Thanks for the info Suburban_Snob!

Apparently Dan's regimen @ acne.org works well to clear skin, and there's a whole lotta info, pics, FAQ's... I recently discovered this site, i'm sure most of you already have... But if you haven't check it out!!

I started using alpha hydroxy acids a few months ago and it has dramatically helped my skin. You all should try it who have acne.

I dunno if this is the appropriate thread, but anyways. I have discoloration on my face, around my lips, it's pretty much obvious and it's bothering me so much! Is there anything that would help?

^^
Maybe a AHA like Glycolic Acid would help. Other options could be a rentiod, like Tazorac or Retin-A. Maybe even hydroquinone.

I would really recommend differn if you have cystic acne. Thats mostly what I have and it's so so great but it doesnt help with the small bumps. A freind gave me an extra tube, I'm out now and I really dont want to go to the dermo to get more so I'm bumed :(

My dermatologist prescribed me a mixture of erythromycin and linola. I've been using it every night for two weeks and I'm finally starting to see some results. In the morning I apply benzoyl peroxide to my problem areas (chin, forehead and the area around my nose) which helps a lot and especially very fast, but is terribly drying.
