The Business of Magazines

Nonononono! "My. Red. Prada. Shearling. Coat.... Costs more than (pause for dramatic effect) a second hand mini."

Of course. I could. Never be. That. Dramatic. LOL

She stole the show for me. I don’t think I could endure her full-time, but her cameo is stan-worthy.

(BTW, how clueless was Lucinda and Patrick with Lineisy. How could two veterans of high fashion not know that this girl is rather one-dimensional and can’t do much more than stand and give high-brow atttitude…? Take some time to study the subject you’re working with before shooting her, and you’ll have a good idea of how to approach the shoot. I get that they’re huge figures in the industry, but that’s still no excuse to be lazy and not do your homework. The poor girl is so clueless and they’re not even helping her— just pulling and pushing on her body parts like she’s a Lego.)

Madness! That must've been a fan, but even then, God. The price is far too dear!

On September 5th Olga Sushko named as new editor-in-chief of Vogue Ukraine

I actually felt a bit sorry for those two, especially for Lucinda. She was the one stuck between Demarchielier, who looked like he was over it, and Lineisy, who had no clue what's what. I imagine in a way it proves what Lucinda said about the fast pace of fashion, but yes, you're right. They probably booked her on the 'so hot right now' premise, not bearing in mind that they may have to actually break her in. Ultimately this torturous segment made me rethink the amount of times I just hurriedly flick past these type of edits in magazines, when so much must've gone into production for it.

I have a question tho, how does one become part of the limited few that they poll for cover choices? Does US Vogue even have that feature

Both covers were weak. But the right choice was made, as bland as it was. The office-fav cover was hideous: Kate spreading her granny-legs was such a terrible sight. I wouldn’t trust Vetements Woman with making choices for even water, but ow could the CD not see how awful it was?!?!?!

I don’t think they planned the shoot with a storyboard— which would have helped so much, Benn. What a waste all those Lego blocks were never used, and the result was so plain— even with 3 days worth of shooting! Lucinda seemed warm and considerate, but the way Lineisy looked so uncomfortable (and still stunningly gorgeous: she’s the only new girl that has that magical factor for me), really showed they didn’t work with her— or put much thought into the shoot. Some models will open up and even go beyond their expectations if they’re given a story to follow, and treated as part of the team. Lineisy looked like she had left her body, already.. Or maybe she’s one of those that’s always not present…

Still a very good doc. I loathed those fashion docs that’s like one long RuPaul/Zoolander drag show. The industry is much more nerdy, with people working through the late hours in front of a computer than what the general public would think it is like. I’m not sure I like the mean streak the filmmaker had: He obviously took sweet revenge on how icily Alex treated him by interviewing Anna about the Rihanna incident— and even his glee in encouraging, exploiting Vetements Woman’s vapidness. I enjoyed it LOL Not sure I liked it, though...

How does Kate have granny legs? I think she has good legs for her age, and she is only 42. It seems like such a mean and unneccesary thing to say. Must be really awful for you to walk around in the real world where people are not all 18 and perfect.

That said, I didn't care for either of the covers.

Lineisy barely speaks English, she only started learning last year - a few months by the time of that shoot - and Lucinda's uneasy direction did not help.
I would probably let go of almost everyone from the staff that we saw.

^^^ I liked Lucinda and the CD’s personalities. The CD had a very grounded approach to her work, and Lucinda immediately comes off personable and still very much self-awared. What turned me off was the CD's and Alex putting on this act about the centennial issue complete with phoney cover mockups, when they both knew that they already had a cover star. That was shady as hell, and when she even professed in a straightforward fashion that she’s “a good liar” when confronted about it by the filmmaker, It thought: “She is aware that this would be immortalized on film for all to see, right…?” I don’t know why she would think that was a good trait to present to viewers.

I’d love to see this filmmaker document the various Vogue offices around the world. Not likely to get a greenlight for such a series since the general public thinks one Vogue (and its offices) is the same as the next, but it would be very interesting for some of us.

eizhowa: No need to take it or make it so personal… She’s been judged on her appearance for 25 successful years— I’m sure one comment about how awful her legs look on a cover is not going to have her flinging herself off the nearest precipice anytime soon. (And it’s not at all awful to be me in my perfect world— rather wonderful, actually.) Lighten up LOL

I finally got the chance to see THE documentary, but I had to stop it somewhere at the Victoria/NYC part, it was too dull.

That was a pretty disappointing documentary. First of all, the filmmaker clearly had no interest, knowledge and even respect for the fashion industry. Plus he seemed very unprepared, he complained that he didn't get access to shoots and the subjects, but when he actually got to talk to them he just froze and asked these silly questions. The editing made some awkward moments even more awkward.

Alexandra didn't benefit at all from this. She came off as a really bland, uninteresting and cold woman (and not even in a cool cold way like Anna). Like other have said, shw doesn't seem to have a big passion for fashion, her thing is much more the business, journalistic side of the job. That came in handy with the Rihanna cover, which I really liked they way she handled it.

Otherwise, I thought Laura was a really cool and great at her job, and of course, Lucinda. She truly is their Grace Coddington, extremely passionate about fashion but at the same time doesn't take it too seriously. What a charming lady she is.

Oh and the 80 pairs of jeans & Vetements fan airheads  When that cringeworthy ~I'm into fashion~ stereotype is real.

i thought the director/camera person was awful - he was deliberately obtuse and ignorant and acted as if he had done zero research before starting the bbc assignment. i also thought it was offensive how he assumed that the women he was interviewing were past their sell by date and could retire/resign at any time.

the secrecy surrounding the cover/editorial was required by the Palace. Alex would be in breach of contract if she had disclosed it to anyone that wasn't on a need-to-know basis.

i was surprised at how small the Vogue UK offices were.

LOVE:

As announcements for future issues go this one is quite exciting. LOVE's Editor-in-Chief and former LOVE cover girl and fashion model Kendall Jenner have invited LOVE readers, friends, and anyone really between the ages of 15-35 to apply to be our next cover star and be photographed by Kendall herself; all through a social media casting call. Applicants are being asked to send a picture of themselves with a small bio of who they are and what they LOVE to do along with the hashtag #LOVEME17 on Twitter and Instagram.

Karl Lagerfeld Said to Guest Edit French Vogue

BE MY GUEST: Karl Lagerfeld, perhaps fashion’s most gifted multitasker, is donning the guest editor cap — for French Vogue.

Word has it the designer is to oversee the Condé Nast title’s holiday issue, for which it traditionally invites a celebrity, or the occasional fashion designer.

John Galliano did the honors in 2006, Tom Ford in 2010 and Victoria Beckham in 2014. Other recent guest editors have included Vanessa Paradis, Sofia Coppola and Inès de la Fressange.

According to sources, Lagerfeld has already enlisted Hedi Slimane to photograph several personalities for the issue, suggesting the designer is resuming his editorial photographer career since exiting as creative director of Saint Laurent in April.

Oh wow, thanks so much for posting! That makes me SO excited, i have been waiting years this to happen!! He is the perfect choice to me, excited to get that issue now! :bounce::buzz::bounce::buzz:

Yeah, I'm more than excited to see how this issue turns out too and Karl Lagerfeld's a perfect for Vogue Paris. He's done it with a few other magazines before too (Vogue Spain springs to mind first).

I'm not familiar of the relationship Emmanuelle and Karl have with each other but I know he's fiercely close to Carine Roitfeld, so I find Karl guest editing Alt's magazine quite an interesting piece of news. Kudos Alt and thanks for the news, Melancholybaby!

Question is, what will the casting look like? Kendall, Gigi, Claudia etc? Because we all know when Karl fixates on a girl he really goes at it hard (see Freja). And getting Hedi to shoot for VP, especially after the latest developments, very odd.

I agree with Vogue28. The choice is almost a shock to me. I feel like there's no true connection between Alt and Karl, and she went about her business perfectly fine without him. And now we have this. I just hope it will be epic!

I'm curious about the model casting too... hopefully none of his current obsessions (Kendall, Gigi and co.).

Someone posted in the S/S17 campaigns rumor thread a pic of Karl, Emmanuelle and Kristen Stewart (wearing Chanel) shooting at Le Ritz in Paris. So we can add Kristen to the list of possible cover girls for this issue.

But will Karl or Hedi shoot the cover. Cause Karl shot Kirsten in Paris. Also Hedi likes totally different models than Karl so that will make it all the more interesting. Colour me excited.
