The Business of Magazines

^ It was March, and ya, not much of a redesign.

^He is the art director right? So that means a new look is in store for UK Vogue.
No, i actually believe he is the creative director, so really i don't see much change, or i might be wrong, hopefully there is. But he always came across as someone who was super cool, and never in the way of making Vogue more modern. But its strange, i wonder after all this time, why is he leaving? Maybe even he cant take UK Vogues ugly covers anymore, or Paradi's cover pushed him over the edge haha.

^Perhaps it's a sign that even bigger changes are about to shake up British Vogue.

As creative director, the cover is his job. and the most important one.
Vogue can handpick anyone in the world to work with. Imagine having that much freedom.

I would be very surprised if Marissa at elle doesnt get the job.

^ I thought Art Director's job is the cover, not Creative? But either way, i hope it goes for the better, because their covers really need an update!

Mikel your prediction came true; More changes at UK Vogue, now Kate Phelan is leaving for a position as Creative Director of TopShop.

Wow, now we just need to get Shulman out, but i doubt that could take place, since she said she plans to be here for 100th anniversary.

Wow, really? Kate Phelan leaving is a very big deal. I'm curious what effect it will have on UK Vogue.

Pretty sure Derrick used to be responsible for Topshop's campaigns, and now Kate's gone to Topshop and Derrick's also left. I wonder if he'll turn up at Topshop also in a different capacity.

Maybe Shulman want to stay for the 100th anniversary, but in the end Conde Nast has the final call.

Bit further information...
Following the news about Kate Phelan leaving Vogue to join Topshop as its Creative Director, the high street retailer has announced that she will take up her role full time from September. Kate has been a long term collaborator with Topshop while in her role as Fashion Director of British Vogue, where she has worked since 1993. Under her creative direction, Kate will oversee product development and brand identity, 'bringing her vision and experience across all levels of the business'.

Thanks for posting that, wonder if we might get more inside info over both of their departures from UK Vogue, WWD needs to get on it!

OUT OF VOGUE: British Vogue is losing two of its longtime staffers, Robin Derrick and Kate Phelan. Derrick, who has been with the title since 1992, is leaving to pursue freelance creative projects, according to a Condé Nast U.K. spokeswoman. He had been Vogue’s creative director since 2001, and created the visual handprint of the current magazine. He worked on Vogue exhibitions, books and events, and the ongoing translation into digital with Vogue apps. Phelan has been with Vogue since 1993, and is the title’s fashion director. She is taking on the role of creative director at Topshop. Phelan had been a long-term collaborator with Topshop while at Vogue. In her new role, she will focus on the creative direction of the brand, overseeing product development and brand identity, according to Topshop.

GOLDSTEIN JOINS W: W’s newly constructed fashion team is expanding a bit more: Stylist Lori Goldstein is joining the magazine and will become style editor at large. Goldstein will work alongside fashion and style director Edward Enninful, who was hired six weeks ago, and creative director Alex Gonzalez, who was brought on in February.

Goldstein has been something of a free agent for years, but said that taking a title on a masthead and “being more of a part of a magazine, which is something I’ve never done, is very exciting to me.”

“What’s so great about what I’m doing in being style editor at large it’s kind of like I get to encompass everything I love to do,” she said. “I’ve always been one of those people that goes back and forth in this business in different ways, so I get to really do great fashion stories with Edward and I’m also going to be working with [editor at large] Lynn Hirschberg and bringing fashion into the element of the actors that we shoot and kind of being the thread through all the different areas.”

Goldstein will work exclusively with W and cannot work for competitors (i.e., other fashion American monthlies), but she will able to continue to work for non-direct competitors (i.e., Italian Vogue) if she’s given a green light by editor in chief Stefano Tonchi. She will be able to continue styling work and on her fashion line with QVC.

And considering Goldstein’s Rolodex, does she have a shot of bringing in a photographer like Steven Meisel regularly into the W fold? “We will see,” she said, coyly.

Honestly, I was really saddened by White's departure as she has been the jem of W along with Nickerson but after learning that Enninful and now, Goldstein, have joined the newly expanded W fashion team, I must say that I cannot wait for the upcoming issues of W now. Hoping for Meisel to shoot regularly on the magazine. :D Or at least for the big fashion issues like March and September. :)

Oh my...to get Meisel to W, to actually do more covers, eds.etc would really turn this magazine around. This new team is exciting!

I know W got a lot of slack in the beginning with Tonchi but the magazine is really finding its place again. Sad to see White leave but I'm it won't hurt W much.

Interesting...but Lori has actually been an on-off contributer to W since 2004. I'd rather see her bring Michael Thompson back to W than Meisel, particularly as we are seeing him less and less in US Vogue.

^ I see your point, Thompson is such a talent, and all he seems to be getting these days is Allure, and even that is being taken over by NJR!

And to me, he has shot so many of amazing W covers/eds.

Oh yes! Michael Thompson definitely! He has shot so many great stuff for W in the past and bringing him back to the magazine would be such a relief. ^_^
