This was inspired by the MDC moneygirls thread. Who are the most successful commercial models in the industry or as the high fashion people like to call them, catalogue girls. Who are raking in 5-7figures?

I know there's Tomiko Fraser

I don't know if you would count her but Ksenia Kahnovich has recently become a catalogue model. She either has a contract or is just loved by Vera Wang b/c she does most of Vera Wangs commercial work.

I think Nanda Hampe would also qualify. She does a lot of high end commercial work. Most people of Tfs may remember her for her McQueen campaign

Thank you Urban Stylin for starting this thread and kab348 for the article. I have always been interested in who are these models, you know before it was in printed catalogues and now mostly on websites, I know their faces and seen them hundread times and never known anyone`s name. I find these "who fashion defines commercial" women the most stunning at most of the times. Tfs has taught me a lot about models and I have learned to appreciate and even love not so traditional beauties, but as they say in the article, mass market commercial girls are so perfect, I guess my taste is a bit traditional after all.

^^Catalog/commercial girls definitely have to be more perfect. I like how that article says that there's just not enough time to retouch all the pictures they shoot--it's true and that's why these models are picked. They have to have everything from their bodies to every single pore perfect because unlike the high fashion world, there isn't the game of hype it's just pure modeling.

wow that's an interesting article, the black girl in the picture looks familiar.
I remember reading an article about Hong Kong commercial models which said they earn even more than their Western counterparts

Luciana Curtis from Brazil also seems to have taken the commercial route to great success, shes always in Avon ads an catalogues as well as other ads

I also agree Nanda Hampe has raked up some really lucrative commerical work like Loreal, some watch brands etc
How about Fernanda Tavares?

In The Netherlands, Joyce Noor is EVERYWHERE. From posing for Hunkemoller to posing for wedding magazines to walking for typical 'classic' Dutch couturiers like Mart Visser (I don't know how big she is outside of The Netherlands, though:(

she did lots of catalogue work for Neiman Marcus before, and now only Simply Vera Wang:cry:

there is this giant misconception that all catalog girls are commercial. All my models do catalog work especially when they are first starting out.

Most of your top catalog girls are somewhere in the middle of editorial and commercial modeling like Amira. There are plenty of Vogue cover models doing catalog work these days.

The Daily Mail mentions Gemma Sanderson, Jamie Gunns, Portia Okotcha, and Kirstie Bennent obviously because their agencies are very much linked to that news paper. Almost every week, half of Storms roster is mentioned in the newspaper. The only problem with naming these models are they aren't genuine catalog girls. Both Gemma and Jamie are still doing editorial work and have done runway in the past. Portia is editorial with the exception of doing work for ASOS. The only true commercial models mentioned is Kirstie Bennent who doesn't have a thread on here.

Here's a list of models who do a lot of catalog work and have threads in the forum. Most of them have done editorial as well as commercial work:

Jamie Gunns- ASOS, Bare Necessities, Bon Prix, Lipsy, Littlewoods, M&S, Nelly, Venca, etc..

^^ I think when people say that someone is catalog-commercial it means that the model's primary work is money type work which is essentially commercial. Anything that is meant to sell to the masses is commercial. But these girls aren't lifestyle girls--and I guess that's where the confusion begins because lifestyle models are also associated with the term "commercial". I think the girls of this thread are what they call"fashion commercial"--meaning they're fashion models doing commercial work like catalogs, household beauty products and non-luxury ready to wear campaigns. The slang term for the successful ones is "catalog queen." As opposed to the fashion models whose bulk of work is editorial and fashion week which is what is popularly known as high fashion girls/the image girls.

Some other catalog queens not mentioned yet are Hollie Witchey, Aline Nakashima, Fanny Anselme, Amber Anderson (now venturing into Image work), Anne Marie Kortright. Miranda Kerr was once a catalog queen but now a celebrity model. Candice S fell into doing only catalog/commercial work after her high fashion route failed. Marisa Miller was one as well...

There's a black model with short hair whose name skipped my head who is the epitome of commercial modelling. I have seen her in catalogues and eds since the 90s shes even in stock photos

Gemma Sanderson- ASOS, Debehams, Figleaves,

I agree, Jamie Gunns was never a commercial model when she was younger - If you look at her thread on here she had a lot of success in her youth as a high fashion model, ie Just Cavalli.

Janini Milet has also worked for ASOS, Littlewoods and has done campaigns for Havaianas, Philips

Gemma Sanderson to an extent as well, but her starting out at an older age is probably why she got pushed into being commercial. I follow her on facebook and twitter and she works for (in addition to what you mentioned) Littlewoods, M & S, Next, Bon Prix, Esprit, a few other catalogues she doesn't mention their names and has done big campaigns for Clarks and New Look as well as quite a few TV commercials, namely a really good one for Axe/Lynx.

I'd like to add Jacqueline Olonicheva aka Zaklina http://forums.thefashionspot.com/f52/zaklina-olonicheva-63904.html
She shoots for Asos, Nelly, Littlewoods, Agent Provocateur, Lipsy, Figleaves, Misguided etc. I'd say she is the new Jamie Gunns in the online catalogue world.

Another girl is Hannah Cooper. A British girl with Next Models who also works for M&S, Asos, LIttlewoods, Misguided etc. She doesn't have a thread on here as far as i can see but she is on a lot of the catalogue websites.

I think these girls who work for M & S, Asos, Littlewoods, etc don't get much of a chance to shoot for others as those companies shoot 5 days a week. The girls that do the smaller online catalogues may only work for them once a month or something so can do lots of different things.

Saw something today I thought I'd post here from the ask.fm page for the modellingconfessions Tumblr, where people ask them questions about modelling even though 99% of what they say is wrong...

i'm confused, how does antm destroy one's career?
It puts you into the wrong kind of modelling. ANTM models stay primarily within commercial modelling, leaving out high fashion modelling where the real money is at. I think that it just sends out the wrong kind of message about the modelling world. The fame that it is associated with is also kind of disregarded in the fashion industry. - Alice

...baffling. Lol

It's so disappointing that many people subscribe to that same misconception. I personally don't follow any ANTM models so I cannot say anything about their careers but saying that commercial modeling is worthless and not lucrative is just a sad lie. Actually, there are people on thefashionspot who reinforce the same misconception.

I just don't understand why we, as model viewers, fans and part of the fashion audience, cannot be happy for a model who chooses to have a low profile, money making career so she can live happily.

Many of the horrible things we hear about the modeling industry is primarily surrounding the high fashion editorial/image industry: lack of success, dead end careers, issues surrounding face and body image, lack of money, lack of jobs, short career spans, obsession with youth. There's actually a very high rate of success in the commercial world if someone can get an agency. In the catalog world, many models can have a lucrative career well into their 30s, 40s, 50s and still have time to make outside investments and projects. If people think women in their 40s can't model, well, think again. Even 40 year old women wear stylish clothes, shoes, jewelry, lingerie and indulge in high end skincare. There are so many department stores, fashion lines and cosmetics brands devoted to those age ranges.

Mass market, "commercial" brands are also less likely to focus on disposable trends. So they don't reshoot a product line as often as a high fashion line. That's great for the model because they can earn usage (For example, a model shoots an image for an advertisement for 1 year for 30K which is then bought out again for the next year. She will be paid 30K again and maybe the company will offer a buyout rate for unlimited usage..).
