Thanks Bianca! I'll definitely look into those.

Didn't get around to watching Candy last night, but I did watch The Hurt Locker and Precious. Both were amazing!

I thought Into the Wild was incredible..but so sad.And the best film for me of last year was Unmistaken Child.I cannot wait to see it again on netflix...

so you'd recommend Precious? i have it and keep meaning to watch it but for some reason i'm never in the mood.. i'm almost dreading watching it, i don't know why. i felt similarly with the Hurt Locker but i'm so glad i ended up seeing it because i thought it was really well done. i think neither film is the kind that i'm instinctively drawn to so i sort of have to force myself to start watching it and then usually they manage to win me over.

That's exactly how I felt, in fact I wasn't even planning on seeing The Hurt Locker. And yes, I recommend Precious. Monique is absolutely amazing in it, I bet she'll win an Oscar for her performance.

Also, just finished watching Candy. Sad on so many different levels  It was really great though, really emotional and brilliant acting. Next up: The Dreamers!

i saw the Lemon Tree two nights ago...has anyone seen this?...beautiful film.. about a lemon orchard that stands between a palestinian woman on one side, who has been handed down the orchard from her father, and the israeli defence minister and his wife on the other... i'd highly recommend it ^_^

Am I the only one that dislikes Into the wild? It was so pretentious.

This thread is for discussing movies in general

- what movies we have seen recently, if we'd like to discuss them with others
- if we have questions about movies, like things we don't understand
- to recommend good movies or warn people away from bad ones!
- but be considerate about spoilers, please! :)

just finished watching A Serious Man by the coen brothers. not a personal favourite of mine... not the kind of film that leaves me with a lasting impression or a lot of emotion, but still one of those films you can appreciate from a film making perspective... it's packed with symbolism, with intelligent dialogue and dark humor and subtle commentary on significant issues - marriage, academia, religion, family, etc. i really appreciated for what it was and for its intelligence and wit.. in almost every scene you have this sense, watching it, that you are missing little references and tongue in cheek moments... every interaction, every shot, every word seems very deliberate, very thought out and purposeful which i admire so much.. they strike me as really thorough, intelligent film makers. nothing is there by accident and everything has so much to it. ^_^ worth seeing, i think....a smart film... but cold, in a way.

A SINGLE MAN

Pros:
- Colin Firth's extraordinary performance. He really created a character. While watching I didn't feel like I was watching Colin, I felt like I was watching George. My pick for Best Actor.
- Julianne Moore's performance was also wonderful. Not my win, but she'd make a top 5 for supporting Actress.
- The costumes/makeup/hair in the film are incredible. Really and truly incredible. I suppose that's expected seeing as it's directed by one of the most talented and successful men in fashion. I really couldn't get enough of the women's eye makeup, Juliane's up-do, Doris, who was just beautiful and fascinating to watch. The men in their slimming suits. Just..too perfect.
- The score but amazing as well. Far and away my favorite of the year.
- Everytime there was silliness, flirtation, or just laughing in this film it was at it's best. That's when it really became somethnig I've never really seen before. Things with these kind of actors and this kind of subject matter and just period pieces in general, they rarely find any time for fun. But this film did and I loved that.
- The characters and their relationships with each other. Perfectly realized.
- George's house was a wonderful setting. Pretty much an architectural masterpiece of glass and wood.
- The ticking clock aspect of the movie. It's not in the book, but I think it was very wise of Ford to add it to the film.

Cons:
- What I COULD get enough of was the numerous out-of-focus shots zooming on on people's eyes, lips, flowers, etc. I know why it was there, but I just think it was over-kill and a poor decision on Ford/the art-director's part.
- the ending felt like a let-down on many levels.

It always feels weird to say that a film you pretty much loved is a disappointment, but I have to say it about this film because my expectations were so high. Overall, It was in most ways a great, masterpiece of a film. But there were a few things (mostly the ending) that deterred me from fully loving it giving it a 10/10. So, until I re-watch it (which I intend to do in theaters), I'm giving it a 9/10

I wouldn't say I dislike it, because there's alot about it that I like, but I agree that it struck me as a bit pretentious.

I tried to watch On the Rumba River two days ago. It's about a rumba group from 1950s in Zaire led by Papa Wendo. It is really beautiful, the band members coming together again and they tell about the turmoils of the country, poverty (one band member in his 70s has 32 children to raise!), but after an hour and a half it was just too long.Very slow. But the cinematography is beautiful.I'm not that patient alas.I also got Singin' in the Rain but didn't have a chance to watch it.

I follow this thread and watch films that you guys suggest.
I watched Franklyn a few weeks ago and I did not like that.. There were several question marks stacked on my head at the end; though I love Eva Green and I liked the idea of killing herself repeatedly for artwork, it was just one of those films which brings the question i keep asking when I see films like that - Aren't films supposed to be entertaining?

I just finished watching Nun's Story with Audrey Hepburn - I thought it was very good and really hammered home the difficulty of the unnatural changes nuns have to make. I was literally shocked at the very poignant end scene where she leaves and is walking down the street but the camera remains in the convent and there is no music! It was beautiful.
It has given me inspiration for my current project actually (at points I was literally tracing Audrey Hepburn's habit off the screen) and I'm about to watch Black Narcissus with Deborah Kerr (I have a thing for nuns) - shall report back soon!
Would love some suggestions :)
