 mouko you're singing my song.....up until last nite I was sleeping on an air mattress that would deflate halfway through the nite and I'd wake up at 4 and have to turn the pump on again.....this was going on for 3 weeks and I had been sleeping on it for 3 months......

as far as mattresses are concerned it's personal....firm, plush, pillow top....go to Sleepy's and lay around on some. I wasn't ready to make such a monetary commitment to the extra plush ones, even though I know I should have......I actually called 1800mattres from the annoying commercials and it was delivered the next day.....and because I work long hours, they delivered it late at nite.

As far as sheets, the higher the thread count the better. avoid the printed ones because they aren't as soft, I love the LOOK of Dwell sheets. A down comforter is key for warmth and comfort. Pillows are personal too. I tend to like the cheap polyfill ones from Kmart and a down pillow......too hard without the down and too soft without the polyfill.....TJMaxx, Daffy's and Century are a good place to find nicer sheets and pillows at discounted prices.

I currently have a great platform bed left behind by the previous renter that I've been using.

Right now I have a horrible aerobed on it with basically no sheets and a piss poor blanket with ikea 2.00 pillows.

Can anyone give me any recommendations on what to look for in terms of a good matress, sheets, pillows and blankets? Any recommendations on stores, preferbly in NYC.

Well I'm danish and danes do love their duvets.. and so should anybody living in places with cold cold winters..

Mouko if you don't like duvets I'll forgive you :p but you simply have to get a pillow if not a pillow and a duvet from http://www.qod.dk/temprakonuk.htm these are the best.. !!

Mouko, basically what Chris said. 1800MATTRESS is good, as cheesy as it sounds. I got mine from there. Ask for Serta with the most coils they have - the mattress must be firm. It should set you back about $600, but it's one of the most important things you should invest in. Century21 is my choice for sheets. Occasionally you can score a good deal at ABC sales.

LOVE that link hanne. Do you know how much their duvets run (in terms of price) in general?

Chris :ninja: Poor you! I just about laughed reading how you had to get up and re-inflate the mattress! Glad you have a real mattress now!

On another note....I've thought about raising my bed ie. creating a platform bed due to the incredibly small size of my room. But can one do this with any bed? I have drawers in my bed and i'm worried that this might make the bed too 'heavy' to raise. Thoughts/experiences?

Meg I had a look at a danish website

According to that site a duvet 135x200cm costs 1399,- (on sale) about 129£
and a pillow (I LOVE this because I can't fall asleep if my head is too hot) costs 399,- (also on sale) about 37£ (Shipping throughout the EU is about 25£)

I had a look at an american website..Temprakon is so expensive over there compared..it could really pay to by it straight from Denmark : http://www.shoplocal.com/shoplocal/iid712793prid-99706_-temprakon-down-comforter.fp

thanks for the info hanne! I have a lovely canadian duvet right now but it just doesn't seem to be keeping me warm (mainly due to the fact that my housemates like to keep the house at an icy 17/19 degrees-too cold for me!) so i'm going to try out an electric underblanket (classy, I know) and then take it from there. If that doesn't work I may need to look into these duvets.

I just had a further look at another site that had a larger selection, the tempraKON duvets comes as summer duvets (999,- on sale), winter duvets (1999,- not sale) and allyear duvets (1599,- not sale)..You could try to compare prices for the duvets in London, find out which one you want and I'll find it on a danish webshop if you like :flower:

Savner sgu lidt en ordentlig dyne! - I have these goose down duvets from Marks & Spencer that you can attach and detach to make either a summer or winter duvet. Quite clever, except they keep detaching!!! So annoying to re-arrange them all the time.

I'm thinking, is there a place to buy headboards?

And I'm quite sure Fritz Hansen has an outlet store somewhere, just not quite sure where.

Hi - I have two basic things I'd love recs on:

1) Any great comforters or other bed linens that are *black* :ninja: or have black in them? (Would need in a California King.) My other coordinating color will probably be ivory, though I could really go with anything that goes with black and dark wood like a British Colonial feel. Not into brights really. I'll need a nice soft warm blanket, some kind of duvet cover or other topper, and probably more sheets (I found some soft jersey modal-fabric sheets in black that I'm trying).

2) Any advice on featherbeds and comforters? Like what's the highest down-to-feathers ratio I'm likely to find in either before getting into truly-outrageous prices? (I see a bunch of 95%-5% stuff)I love lots of down, and extreme softness. (A lot of the stuff at Macy's etc. seems to be too constructed for featherbeds - they feel hard. I want a big poufy outrageous pool of down. Ditto for the comforter.) On-sale helps but primarily looking for comfort and with the comforter, warmth.

Thanks ever so! :flower:

Mouko, a man of exquisite taste such as yourself may want to consider a fine mattress from either of these companies:

http://www.duxbed.com/main.htm

http://www.royal-pedic.com

Duxiana is a Swedish mattress. It is the best of the best and it is expensive, but you owe it to yourself. At least peruse their website to educate yourself what is the best.

Royal Pedic is a fine American made mattress. The materials used are natural cottons, etc. The mass brand mattresses are made with lots of off-gassing synthetic materials that I personally would not want to spend half of my life in close proximity to. Haruki sleeps on a Royal Pedic all natural cotton mattress and he never wakes up grumpy or sore. They are more expensive than a mass market mattress, but not a whole lot more.

For sheets, why not also have the best. Go to Pratesi at 829 Madison Ave.

Keep in mind that your mattress and linens are't only for you, but they are for your lovers as well. Providing them with comfort after love making is a gesture of caring that reflects upon you the host. If they are comfortable in your bed, I promise you they will want to come back for more.

And now some interiors by Alvar Aalto

And what do you think about Designers Guild ?Their duvets, pillows and textiles are amazing!

How does it hide the wires? I can still see them! In fact that last picture sore of creeps me out....it looks like something is growing in there!

^ wow :woot:

That wire hiding thing faust  I agree with you, i guess I would buy one if it wasnt $300...im sure I could make one ^_^

A nice bed...one of my indulgences!

I love nice sheets -- I have a favorite basic white set from Restoration Hardware that are so soft (Italian Paradigm 600 thread count http://www.restorationhardware.com/rh/catalog/product/product_suite.jsp?productId=prod1340030&navCount=3), and then a gold set of Frette linens that are a bit heavier, but very luxurious.

I used to sleep on a down feather bed, but it had to be fluffed up every day (which was annoying). So I upgraded my mattress and it has a pillow top. I love my down comforter - and I have a silk duvet on that.

I'd love some advice on pillows -- the down ones I have are too hard!

^^I love these designs....you can buy a lot of the plates on ebay and the Jonathan Adler store has them as well.
