The Jam...Paul Weller...Mods

i love when people dig out older threads that i missed! this one is faboulous!

Am I the only one who thinks there's a huge similarity between Paul Smith and Paul Weller? Smith is on about "traditional british clothes, with a twist"...can't help but think that that describes weller's stuff perfectly - clashing "conservative" trousers and university jackets with violet paisley cuffs and socks.

wella

I met wella on his 1st solo Lp tour.
I saw the jam many times, the style council once, and have seen wella solo several times live.
if you have any questions about him or his bands, let me know, i know quite a bit about the man.

^^you're not the only one......
halifaxhayman...don't you think that both weller and smith are both just very 'british'...?
that's what has always struck me about both of them and what i think they might have in common in terms of style...i would be very surprised if paul weller doesn't wear paul smith......

B)

^^yeah, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for me to say both are my favourites in their respective fields. I like the clever mixing of conservative and eccentric in the case of Smith. And the mixing of intelligent writing without giving up the working class "simplicity" that Weller does.

I would feel comfortable wearing Paul Smith for formal occasions, and wouldn't feel out of place wearing his stuff when i'm out for a casual drink. Likewise, weller has some fairly weighty lyrics but you don't need to be a university student to appreciate his work.

I adore    The Jam! I love the beat surrender album, it's in my cd player right now  I love the clash too, and the smiths, brit pop in general!
I loved The Jam's style too, even though non of them were particularly good lookin blokes, they always managed to look great IMO. :flower: I hadn't seen this thread before now

I think weller has really gotten better looking over the years. Bit of a spotty student when he was young, but now he looks like he could easily stand his own against a pair of drunken thugs, whilst quoting Byron.

if anyone has any more pics to add..please feel free...
i know there have got to be more out there somewhere...:flower:

obsessed with Snap! and Style Council too. I think he's a genius.

Tsc

by the jam I recommend the sound affects LP; and also all mod cons.
i saw both tours, at the ritz & the palladium respectively, amazing shows.

the style council are a very interesting band. 'our favourite shop' is prob their best [internationalists in usa] but also worth owning are cafe bleu, the cost of loving, and confessions of a pop group. and their box set & 'heres some that got away' b sides Lp
I saw TSC at the savoy on their only usa tour.

wella solo is a bit more hit & miss, but the 'paul weller' lp is his best, and then 'wildwood' & 'heliocentric' are worth owning too. the studio 150 lp is good too.
hopefully he'll be back this year to tour...
i saw him at the ritz on his first solo tour in usa; and also at roseland.

young paul weller...pulled off the official website... ;)

( i don't mean to step on anyones toes now, but i'm very interested in subcultures s'cuse me :flower: )

The modernists during the 60's did ABSOLUTLY NOT listen to ROCK'N'ROLL OR PUNK just like kids in many other young emerging subcultures they wanted to revolt against the past, they danced to black r&b and soul from us because that kind of music was the most difficult to get hold of in uk at the time. their style was very classy, italian costumes and scooters instead of motorbikes, the very first mods even listend to jazz).

The reason till why northern soul is called northern soul is because of how poor working class kids in northern england went out and danced all their sorrows away to soul, (loads of drugs were involved too).
In London the r&b and funk scene was bigger.

But as the 60's moved on the modernist subculture got more and more mainstream and spread around the kids, and the mods with their vespas the modettes with their mini skirts got into real trouble with the more classic "teddy boys" who listend to rock'n'roll and rode on motorbikes, they even fought in riots.

The parkas where from the beginning a pacifist symbol ( think 68).
( i believe it's the same with the brittish airforce symbol)
another symbol the one with the fist (often seen as a print on t-shirts), is a northern soul symbol, but allso a classical revolutionairy symbol, used as early as during the french revolution.

During the 70's the punks stole the rock'n'roll of the teddy boys and changed it in a very provocative way for the time. The mod revival scene allso emerged, which films such as quadrophenia and bands such as the jam.
Music styles got mixed up with each other, the modernists became more like nostalgists and something to explore for the younger generations.

allso the casuals ( well dressed fotball fans) origins from the mod culture... i could go on forever...

still today subcultures, styles and music is about having fun just of course,
but emm, it's just i am allergic to rock, i really really dislike rock because of rockjournalists and because of the macho attitude, nme bands, commercialism etc.

so please don't assosiate it with the mods.

We're talking Mods here. So what did you get back then?
Of course, you get the weekend suits, pierre ardin was very popular. You get the surplus army parka jackets to cover em. For daily use, you get browns and fred perry polo's. The scooter boys on their peds, vespa's or lambretta's. And those narrow trousers, with those shoes, those shoes.
My style is very close to the mod's, slightly punk, with military touches. I know when I wear a suit outside, I cover it in an overcoat, sometimes a parka.

Arrgh, pictures come later.

We are the mods we are the mods! we are we are we are the mods! B) :flower:

loved that soundtrack and the movie. it didn't hurt that Sting was in it.

punk music was named after being not "commercial" and just garage,it started in 1966 in America, with bands like The nazz,(with todd rundgren) and The electric prunes for example,it was a whole different punk mod scene, you can get all this bands in the Nuggets collection, great great ones.Mods were capitalist from excellence since de early 60's,so they never disliked commercialism in a way.. the thing is that right now it seems that being a teenager it means "lack of class" and no culture.. which is not true in all the cases, that's why today's young musicians are never going to be like those ones in the past.Thank the lord some of us love the 60's ;) :flower:

yup and actually the vespa Ace Face(sting)has on the movie,it had been mistaken by an originall "GS",which is not correct, cause isn't that style ,the "gs" on the scooter are from Gordon Summer(sting's real name);)

I remember when I was really young and the first time I fashion really clicked, it was watching a programme on the mod era and I saw this woman in a beautiful coat witha short funnel neck and flat white pointy boots I just fell in love with them. I have such a vivid image of it still.

Great posts ball and tigermilk :flower:
