First, FM2 in NY is the secondary board. The work is not exactly high fashion but not commercial either. The women's Ford II board works for mags like Shape, FHM, etc. Whatever the men's equivalent of those mags are would be where most FM2 models work.
Ford in Paris is a very good agency. They have a more high fashion goal than the NYC office. Just look at the girls they represent. Though there's overlap with the NY office, they also have girls like Hannelore, Roos, Lydia Hearst, etc., girls who are really more high-end fashion. I wouldn't say Ford is THE best agency in Paris -- I still think IMG, Elite, Marilyn and possibly Women and Next are at least as good or better. But if you're looking at the best agencies in Paris, Ford is one of them.
Ford in NYC is something of a question mark. Their commercial division is very strong. For a few years after repping Karen E, Maggie R and Erin OC, their high fashion credibility was in the dumps when those girls left. The past three seasons, they've rebounded a bit and girls like Nataliya, Camilla and Cameron are major girls. They had very strong representation on the S/S 06 runways, but so far during the NYC shows for F/W 06-07, I would say they lost some momentum. Nataliya did really second and third tier shows. And what happened to Cameron, where was she? Camilla and Flavia did a good number of good shows, however. Maybe Ford girls will have stronger showing in Paris and Milan.
There's also a lot of defections at the agency for whatever reason. While every agency suffers through periods when girls leave, Ford seems to be plagued by the Karen Elsons and Lydia Hearsts who leave while their careers remain pretty hot. Stephanie Seymour is the most recent big name to defect although she was with them for at least 5 years, probably more.
I will say that their track record indicates they are very good at developing new young girls, getting them into edgy mags like Vision, Visionaire, Nylon, Italian Vogue etc. But where Women, DNA and IMG have been terrific and maintaining the initial interest in their new girls and getting them multiple bookings with the Vogues and Ws and Harpers Bazaars globally, Ford is less successful.
Also, very few of the top campaigns in the past recent years have booked Ford girls.
But then again, the agency does seem to be making efforts at getting back into the high-fashion market in a major way. We may have to wait until bookings for F/w 06-07 campaigns then the S/S 07 shows to really reach a verdict on how those efforts are going.
