The Official Harry Potter Thread

I'm watching Chamber of Secrets on ABC family right now, but they haven't shown anymore new footage yet.

im watching prisoner of azkaban on abc family right now, I dont know if im allowed to post this here but here are some thoughts I have on the films,

*I still will always miss the old dumbledore from chamber of secrets and sorcerers stone, so sad when the actor passed away! : (
*I think the casting of almost all male parts are perfect except for gary oldman for sirius and the lupin character it just never clicked for me I dont know why
*I did not like emma thompsons acting as professor trewlaney, did not like the choice of clemence posey for fluer or the actress for cho chang
*I thought the yule ball scene where the band perfomed was the most awkward moment of harry potter film ever

it bugs me because sometimes the casting will be so spot on, for instance umbridge was PERFECT..Snape is PERFECT..lucius malfoy is PERFECT..Wormtail is PEFECT...and then other times it just seems to fall apart.. ie the patil twins..

anyone else feel this way?

@ailin
I actually prefer Michael Gambon in the Dumbledore role. He does a better job of capturing the quirky and strong side of Dumbledore. Richard Harris always seemed too frail and that's probably because he was sick when they filmed SS and COS. But I love Richard Harris.

I actually really love Gary Oldman as Sirius. I wasn't too happy when I first saw POA, but he grew on me. I also like David Thewlis as Lupin. The casting directors for Potter are brilliant IMO. They never cast who I expect/want, but the actors they choose are always spectacular. In fact, the only actor that I've ever had issues with over the years is...Alan Rickman as Snape. He's amazing, but I don't think he's done a good job of showing just how malicious Snape is. I think it's always been TOO obvious that Snape wasn't that evil, because Alan makes it so obvious. I think this is because JK Rowling told him the ending of the book right when he was cast, so he's always known Snape was "good." In the books, Snape is just straight up evil sometimes, so the ending is very surprising.

I love the Yule Ball scene. It's almost exactly like the book. :D

hey guys thanks for the responses haha I wholeheartedly mean it when I say the books were such a big part of my childhood, I guess I only wish that the films were perfect because the books to me were a dream.

I find myself constantly comparing harry potter to lord of the rings, I know the film version of lotr differs so greatly from the books are perhaps the target audiences are disparate but there is not one cast member, one moment, one music score, one instance of 9 hours + of film would I ever find fault with or change. And I guess I wanted this same level of fluidity and perfection with harry potter..I'm happy with the films for the most part but I guess I would have been happier if it didnt have so many little pieces that just dissapoint me however I am as excited as the next person for julys finale

im watching harry potter movie righ now but i dont know which one is it

i also Michael Gambon. he's so much warmer and charismatic than Richard Harris. and some of the reasons why many fans don't like him is due to the writing and directing and not his personal interpretation of the role.

and Gary is perfect for Sirius imo. he's exactly how i imagined him from the books.

but everybody pictures the characters differently, so you will never really find someone who is perfect for everybody

Here's some AWESOME news! It was announced awhile back that WB was planning on tearing down Leavesden studios and building a new, high tech, bigger studio that will enable more films to filmed there and also create more jobs in the UK. But they're also planning on building a Harry Potter museum that will have all the original sets and is scheduled to open sometime in Spring 2012!

They just announced today, that in addition to the museum, they will also be building a 120-roomed Harry Potter-themed HOTEL!! It's costing them 160 million dollars. Here's the article from USA Today: :buzz:

Harry Potter: Hotel planned near Hogwarts

By Barbara De Lollis, USA TODAY

Might we see a Harry Potter Hotel open someday? It's possible - if developers near a Harry Potter attraction in the works near London get creative.

About 20 miles outside of central London, Warner Bros. has started work on a $160 redevelopment of Leavesden Studios - the site where the popular Harry Potter movie series has been filmed for about a decade, PropertyWeek.com reports.

The first public attraction - a behind-the-scenes Harry Potter tour - is scheduled to open before the Summer Olympics in the spring of 2012.

The redevelopment plan also includes a 120-room hotel, though no date has yet been set.

Visitors will be able to walk on to some of the sets from Harry Potter movies, including the Great Hall at Hogwarts and Professor Dumbledore's office, PropertyWeek.com tells us.

With the success of its first six of seven titles, the Harry Potter movie series "had already achieved the distinction of being the top–grossing film franchise of all time, with a combined worldwide gross of $6.37 billion," Warner Bros.' parent TimeWarner said in a press release this week.

They should have put that in the movie. It's less than a minute long.
I loved that moment in the book.

Oh and WB released a statement saying there are no plans for a hotel, so darn it. Maybe in the future? One can still hope!

^IMO, it would have fit rather awkwardly into the movie. Books can transition smoothly with monologue, mini-scenes, etc. In movies, on the other hand, a scene is a scene.

I feel like a Harry Potter themed hotel would just be trying to milk a franchise dry. I'd actually prefer if they did something like a short film for one of the Beedle the Bard stories.

Now that should have been in the movie! It's quite powerful and really makes her look more human. It makes you relate to her in a way actually.

They had a great scene in the book with her and Dudley, I was hoping they would have kept it in. Made the hate I had for them go away and I cried

That's a great scene, but I agree with TianSoFine, fitting it in to the movie would have been hard. It's only minute long but they would have needed more material to build this scene up and that would have taken more time.

The 2011 Jameson Empire Film Awards were held in London today. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I won the award for Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film. Actor Tom Felton accepted the statue. Actress Emma Watson was nominated in the Best Actress category, but lost to Noomi Rapace for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Also Gary Oldman (who plays Sirius Black) received the Empire Icon award, which was presented to him by Oscar-winner Colin Firth.
