The Plus Size Thread - All are welcome!

Oh no. That looks like the shift dresses my Granny wears around the house. At first glance I thought she'd done something interesting and had a matching clutch but that's a pocket. IT HAS HIP POCKETS. I just want to put one of those black boxes over her eyes like the Don't in Glamour magazine.

Something this week that made me think of this thread: news that Aretha Franklin is engaged to be married. Just thinking about what she might wear blows my mind.

I think Jordin always looked cute on the show and dressed age appropriate and in things that were flattering to her figure. I read somewhere that she was a plus size model for a short time.

I saw the same shift on Emilia Fanjul, who is probably in her 60s and not plus, and it looked better.
A couple of years ago, I read that Valentino did some gear for one of Aretha's tours, and Aretha was still quite large. I guess that money and fame trumped snobbery in that case. :innocent:
Her most recent pics, though, weren't good. She was caught in candids wearing "mom jeans" with the elastic waist.

I'm approx. about a 12/14 US size.. I just ordered a pair of balenciaga pants in a size 12 and 14 from yoox..does anyone know about their sizing? Does it run a little small or not?

thanks!

balenciaga does run small. I know they used to run absolutley tiny but then stores stopped ordering size 34 and they made the old 36 into the new 34. It still runs small though.

I think MGR looks decent, NYSD

Albeit it is in black or navy blue and Lance Armstrong (Tory Burch's supposed manfriend) doesn't do much for me.

but thanks for your help!

Now that summer is here, how are people working with their problem areas? For me, that's my arms. I don't do sleeveless or anything capped. I have muscular shoulders but they are thick.

Also, who makes good jeans for plus size? I haven't worn jeans in about 8 months since my last pair got messed up. I really need a pair.

Oh yeah, what to do about arms in Summer is always an issue for me as I had big arms even when I was slim. Capped sleeves are the worst as they usually hit at the thickest part of my arms, sleeveless is even better than that. I live in an area that has a very short Spring and a long hot dry Summer so I look for 3/4 length sleeves in linen, cotton, cotton/spandex or linen/cotton blends. This gives me coverage in fibers that can breathe. You can find this sleeve length in shirts and tess. If you have trouble buttoning the front up without gaps (which I often do) wear a white tank underneath and leave the top offending buttons unbuttoned. This also gives you the flexibility to take off the outer lay when you are at home. Another option to consider would be easy fittiig tunics in breathable fabrics. I have purchased several 3/4 lenght sleeve shirts, tees and tunics from Talbots (some of their Irish linen items are styled ok for basics) J. Jill and Eddie Bauer.

Jeans are difficult as well. I still am not satisified with the selection available especially as I can never find good dark washes in plus sizes. I recently purchased some slim fit jeans from Lands End of all places and they fit great. I was very surprised. I've also had good luck with the tried-and-true fit jeans from J. Jill. They aren't fashion forward but they do fit well and are good basics. I don't like overly embellished pockets or any embellishments on the legs and unfortunately many plus-size jeans are way too overly embellished for me.

I hope this is helpful. I'd love to know how you end up working with these "problem" areas.

ugh, arms. its impossible to not wear sleeveless though sometimes here, when its 110 out

as for jeans, z. cavarricci which they sell at torrid are pretty good. gap goes up to size 20 (i think)

I just got some babydoll style tops from Old Navy that are actually very flattering on a curvier frame. They are a little shorter than 3/4 sleeve so they hide my arms very well but it should still be breezy. I'm also thinking about doing trapeze tops with slim straps over baby tees. Again, hiding the problem arms.

I have a bit of a tummy...I'm already nervous that people are going to ask if I'm pregnant. It's enfuriating. but i try to take it lightly. gonna have to exercise more, and get some spanx

Oh man, I NEVER wear sleeveless and I live in the desert! I don't care, I'd rather die than go without sleeves!

To the jeans question, I do well with the Avenue, of all places. I'm wearing some of their "denim lite" white jeans, today. I also like their Premieres and have four pairs of them.

Seven7 worked for me in their early LB incarnation (2004-2005), but not since then.

I also got a pair of Forth and Towne curvy bootcuts a couple of weeks ago when they started the 50% off blowout.

I am spending this summer in some pretty gauzy tunics I picked up a couple of months ago. They have open necks and some empire-style waist detail, which is helping with my tummy issues. I've been a Stevie Nicks fan as long as I can remember, so I do love anything with a gypsy feel & would probably be wearing these even if I was smaller. I always get compliments on them when I'm out.

I am fortunate enough to work at home so I don't have to worry with meeting office dress standards or really anything more than business casual when I do meet with a client. I like to be comfortable but try to look presentable just in case I do have an unexpected visitor. My favorite thing to wear while working at home home is a stretch terry tunic from Lilly Pulitzer.

And if I'm honest I have to say I'm spending a good bit of time in workout gear. Devoting myself to getting healthier this summer, and hopefully getting rid of some size too.

And I forgot to answer the jeans question! I discovered Paris Blues in plus @ Torrid a few years ago and have pretty much lived in them since.

I'm going to have to visit Avenue. They have a store here but I've never even been in it.

cait, the tunics with the empire waist details sound wonderful. Did you find them at a specific store, or are they vintage?
