The Row - The All-Things The Row Thread

A couple questions...
How much for a tee & where can I buy it?

Does any place in Chicago or Indy carry it? Ill probably have to call & order it so it doesnt matter really but theres a possibilty I could check it out if its there or it would at least get here faster if I had to order it lol.

true .... to an extent.
if you are t alking about a trained designer who went thro formal training or some informal training ....at least some form of hands on experience in design.

somehow i dont think these two kids have any of these qualities other than shopping and dressing up ......... as stylists ......[ are they even that i wonder..?] i suspect their experiences in life and wat they have seen or not seen and lived or not lived is an important determining factor in their fashion "sense ".......

yes this thread is about a fashion - and its an objective task to like or nont like the clothes BUT also as a fashion thread we must also provide an insight on the background and history of the designer ..... that IMO is an important angle for fashion commentators ..otherwise we can just all go to Topshop or HM where there is no need to have a "name " ie nameless /faceless fashion ....as oppose to a personality ...i wld say ditto to people like LAMB /pdidddy/et al.

lets face it this is yet another attempt by these kids to milk their franchise ..which is very clever indeed .......BUT dont make it sound that they are fashion designers - theyy are not ...that would be an insult to those who spent years toiling for their craft.

You're forgetting something. They aren't working alone on this. They are working with a friend who has studied fashion for some number of years also.

Why is it an insult? Why? Are they taking away work from Galliano? Are they sneaking up to McQueen's house at night and flinging The Row in his face and saying 'EAT IT b*tch!'? They're not doing a runway presentation and flaunting their work in the way some 'designers' (who do have training but don't produce anything of interest and sometimes poor quality) are doing. This line isn't 'ambitious', it's simple, produced in very small quantities at HIGH quality and is made to last. As far as I'm concerned, why does that mean you have to have studied fashion for 20, 30 years?

This whole attitude is so elitist and it makes me sick. I can somewhat understand the hatred because of all the celebrity collections out there but they are 100% involved in this.

Is the problem that you're envious? I don't see any other reason to get so emotionally involved. You don't like the price? Then don't buy it. The reason the price is like that is because of the materials, the quality and the limited stock. This isn't going on sale across the country in every target.

I don't know...I just think it's a really childish attitude to point at somebody and say "They haven't done 6 years at fashion school and 6 years interning OH! and they're already famous how dare they say the sacred word 'Design'?"

Just look at this line and see if you find it pretentious or deserving of this scorn. Is it trying to be something it shouldn't be? Should it not exist? If you really look rationally I think you'll find the answer is no...

But if you do find the answer is yes it shouldn't be because of who they are. At all.

The tees I bought were either $195 or $198 (I know only $3 difference lol ) and the white TANK was $150. I bought all of them at Maxfield in LA but they are available at Barneys too. Maybe you can call Barneys and ask if they have them, and if not ask if they know where they have sold too.

Edit: A few more points. As others have pointed out, Ashley has interned previously and done some informal studies with fashion. Mary Kate doesn't pretend that she's fashion savvy but she has standards and knows what clothes she does and doesn't like which is also important for the harmony of the brand.

Secondly your point about name brands etc. What you're saying is something different. Coming and insulting somebody and saying they're ugly is not being objective or insightful about the designer. It's vindictive. A lot of people couldn't name the current designer for Chloe (okay maybe most of them not here but they have a large clientele). Does that mean that the brand automatically becomes H&M? It doesn't. While many people feel it's necessary to become invested in the personal lives of the designers, I think just as many people only want a name to attach to a product and not a back story to decide whether they like the person before the clothes. I'm not interested in learning about Yohji Yamamoto. I couldn't care less if he had 5 wives who ran filipino bars. His clothes are great and that's why people hear Yohji and then look at the clothes.

As far as I'm concerned the only reason people want to delve into a backstory is because they're not smart enough to critique just the clothes. It's not just the same in fashion, it's all over the reviewing board. People who critique a director before they critique a movie. It's lazy journalism, one that allows people to ignore the craft of the clothes and focus on personal soundbites to spice up their writing. Would a good review of the MJ show have read "Now, because I think Marc Jacobs is an ugly drunken sl*t, his clothes are messy and disoriented"? Not at all.

I don't think anybody here is comparing Ashley to Alexander McQueen but they are producing a product that has a completely different concept.

If you think the price is too high then you should justify it by comparing the quality of the clothes and the fitting of the clothes to existing products on the market and give and take for the name. From what I can tell the clothes are around the Chloe price point for their more simple items but generally cheaper. I think that's fair considering they produce less.

I'm sure other people have something more coherent and insightful to say and I'm just rambling but..oh I don't know. Just go watch Ratatouille.

Thanks so much. Do you know where they are located in the store... what should I ask for when I call?

Umm...at Barneys in Beverly Hills they WERE (I did not see them this weekend when I went, must have sold out - they had a really small selection though) located by Missoni, Givenchy, Lucien-Pellat Finet (2nd floor) and in Maxfield they are located by the big case of vintage Hermes stuff on the opposite side of the cash register...sorry thats the best I can say about where it is in Maxfield because if you have been in there you would know that is it not really organized by type or any thing. When you call (I assume you will call Barneys) just ask for the floor that The Row is on. Good luck! :flower:

I bought a tank dress from them to wear under sheer dresses and honestly I have to say the quality isnt great. The little chain on the inside ripped and a seem is coming apart. Where they have it is the fit which is great and the fabric isnt bad.

^Yeah the fit is AMAZING but they are soooo delicate you have to be really really careful unfortunately :(

I still want at least one I think. I know what its like with delicate fabrics... not that The Row compares to C&C lol but the C&C fabric is thin & gets holes & things really easy. So Im sure if its really thin fabric even if its better quality it could have the same problem. I really love the fit though... seeing them on MK & Ash.

Does anyone remember Ashley wore this amazing outfit[ it was all black] in Australia promoting their kid line was it part of "The Row" collection?

i am only saying lets call a spade a spade ..if you designed the collection then youre a designer ....ie conceptualised it and cut it etc....if you put it together ..you are probably a stylist .......thats all....

So much for paying $$$ for quality, huh?

That sounds like damage and not quality issues..if I buy a macbook and a key is ripped off it doesn't mean that the macbook is a bad product. It's a shame that that happened though.

omg LOL  I love the line but I have to agree with what you said bearbrick...

at last someone remembers ...... those unforgettable Donna Karan images and those amazing stuff when she first launched just blew my mind and it was super stylish and so well executed....i even bought one of the "bodysuits " ..just for keeps >>>ahem<<

fo you joiedemode:flower::flower::flower:B)

well, it's not really the same, and yes, I do expect for things to last when I buy designer(s)... if any button falls off or anything.. that is a BIG NO NO for me.

Well most of the Apple products are functionally bad but well excuted in design terms...the amont of ipods I have had in repair! Sorry going off topic...

But yeah it's a shame if you pay a lot of money and the quailty is bad or extremely fragile...I still would like to buy one of their peices though...

I think the quality really differs between the silk/modal and cotton/polyester product lines. The tees that look more "burnout" are the cotton/polyester blends and my friend had issues similar to GuessGirl with those, but has had no issues with her silk/modall (the cleaner, even sheerer fabric) tees.

are they selling accessories? I really love this belt.
