The Vegetarian & Vegan Thread

Speaking of seeing such unsavoury places, where I am, there's a factory known as 'the burnhouse'. Whenever you pass the general area, there's a smell in the air, and some people imagine it's the smell of things being melted down to make glue, even though it's not a burning smell.

When I was a young teen, my friend's father worked there, and one day he brought us with him when he had to call in, so we saw what lay behind the entrance. First of all, the road leading up to the main part of the place was piled high on either side with ribcages and bones waiting to be stripped of the last remnants of flesh, and in front of us, there was a small swimming-pool sized pit full of animal offal - huge corkscrew intestines and brains and sloppy livers - and from what I remember, the smell was the evaporating tissue fluid from these organs.

And what traumatised me for ages afterwards was that there was nothing to stop anyone from falling into that pit. No rails, no steps, nothing. Probably nothing would happen if you fell in - but the idea of it. And there were warehouses beside it, who knows what was in them.

The factory was the stage after the slaughterhouse - a renderer.

Has anyone ever tried Amy's frozen foods? They're organic and vegetarian, a lot of their products are vegan too. I don't know what I would do without them.

^ I'm obsessed with Amy's Chunky Vegetable Soup.

I'm starting Week 3 of a vegan/gluten-free cleanse (also no alcohol, sugar or caffeine) and I have never had more energy in my life.

Once my 21 day Oprah cleanse is over, I am going to adopt this kind of diet as more of a regular one. I'm loving the more healthy foods and seeing my food cravings totally change.

I've read so much lately on how unhealthy meat & cheese are ... I had no idea. It's scary how uneducated we really are about food.

Are any of you guys younger and still living at home with parents that aren't vegetarians? My mom doesn't want to cook seperate meals for me and I'm a terrible cook myself.

Do you guys have any simple recipes or websites with some? Most that I find either involve a lot of prep or unusual ingredients that can only be found in specialty stores or are super expensive...

And yeah I had no clue about the whole meat & cheese not being that healthy. My parents don't believe me. lol But I can't give up cheese, I can't live w/out it!

Any raw foodies here?

I did a raw food week once... (it) was unhealthy. ****Edited**** I had tons of nuts and raw veggies and fruit. But didn't get enough nutrients and protein in.

Any of you ever read anything by Brendan Brazier?

I was flipping channels the other night and ended up watching a fascinating lecture. He's a vegan athlete (and has a line of supplements/energy bars called Vega) and is very knowledgeable about ***Edited *** muscle and the health benefits of a plant based diet.

Btw, he's not too into the raw thing. He thinks people get too focused on raw and not on health.

I'm on the library waiting list for his Thrive Diet book and I guess he has a newer book about fitness. His website is pretty interesting as well.

hmm, thanks for the info. When I was into raw I found a website with Cave Man exercises, things like squatting, running, hunting, lifting, dragging the carcass..all primordial exercises most humans don't do these days. Can't find it anymore though! the illustrations were classic! hahaha

Does anyone know if the Kelis thread was deleted? Some pretty interesting discussion going on in there...

On another note, I finally found a store that sells seitan. Very excited.

I can't stand seitan for some reason.Must be all the grains in it.I made tofu for lunch yesterday,it's so good when you have it with nutritional yeast sprinkled on top, it adds a little flavor to it.I've been loving dark rye bread too, full of fiber!

It appears that it was moved to an undisclosed location ;) I quite liked that thread as well ... :p A regular rollercoaster ride of No she didn't  Yes she did

Congratulations on finding a seitan source!

 Isn't it weird how it works out like that?

Personally, being a vegan hasn't been easy. -_-

One, I constantly have people telling me, "A vegan diet isn't healthy." (Says the guy hitting up the Burger King every lunch break.) I bought chips and he picked up the bag and read and analyzed every single goddamn ingredient on the package. Uh, duh! I've already checked it. All I can say to those who are so "opposed" to my new lifestyle is, "Different strokes for different folks." (Thank you, KiroTV.) I think you can about the exact same nutrients, vitamins, minerals, etc. from vegetables and fruits and the like as you can from meats.

Two, I find myself saying, "I can't have this, I can't have that." It sounds so bad, like there are rules we have to follow. Like, my friend Miles tells me, "Guess you can't have Chipotle anymore." It is unfortunate that I won't be able to enjoy their burritos anymore, but I don't feel upset over it at all. ^_^ What can I say so that being a vegan doesn't sound so negative?

:flower:

I am partaking in Meat Free Monday this year, so have been trying to find some interesting veggie recipes for lunch and dinner (and need to provide for my family dinner-wise too) - I went to buy my lunch today and they had at least 50 things on the menu and ONE vegetarian option. And it was gross! So I asked the woman to make me something from scratch, which worked out well because I got fresh food that hadn't been sitting in a display cabinet all morning!

^ You're welcome :flower: Here's an interesting story about cooking without meat ... how to replace the flavor, which according to this article is umami ... http://www.chow.com/stories/12009 Lots of interesting ideas. It includes a link to meatless recipes.

You could also do breakfast for dinner ... pancakes or waffles or French toast, maple syrup, fruit, milk. Or veggie omelettes and toast or croissants ...

Veggie lasagna is good.
