The Vegetarian & Vegan Thread

:doh: Same here! STYLEOCIDE could tell you how many times I've told her how badly I want ribs. :ninja: She always tells me, "Think of how it got there!" Then, it's smooth sailing. :D

oh god, don't remind me :ninja:
I miss baby back ribs from Applebee's
but thinking that before it was just a little cute pig stops my cravings

one of my favorite meat dishes is shish-kebab and it's quite popular in my culture so my mom started cooking it when Im not home :ninja:
cause she feels sorry for me...but I can still smell it when I come back!

Eating so much meat and dairy really comes off as careless and greedy to me.

Aw, don't hate! I wonder what part of our culture is the cause of our love of meat/dairy. But I do see it as so much of our holiday lives: Easter (ham), Thanksgiving (turkey), Christmas (ham). Milk for breakfast, scrambled eggs ... I wish I could conjure up more examples.

Does anyone know of good vegan faux meat selections? I love brats and I looked for alternatives, but many of them contain egg. Grr.

I've never had a vegan faux meat thing. My sister used to get tofu dogs...but I haven't ever.Just not so appealing to me.I can't even recall what meat tastes like!

I need cold meats. I'm tired of veggie burgers because I always have to prepare them warm. I want a deli creation!!

Skinny b*tch made me go vegetarian.

On being a preachy, I try my hardest not to even let anyone know I am. It's mostly the non-vegetarians that preach to me. Ugh.

Actually, since I moved to Oregon I haven't got much of that. Everyone here is pretty much vegetarian/vegan. It's mostly just "are you a vegetarian?" "Yes" "Oh, okay." It's nice not getting lectured by people who have no idea what vegetarianism is. "Ommmgggg, you don't eat meat? So... what DO you eat?" Gawd.

I had to laugh when I read that Skinny b*tch convinced major league baseball player Prince Fielder to go vegan. I guess his wife made him read it. There was a lot of press about it at the time and he got a lot of crap from sports dudes. I don't know if he's still vegan, but he's still huge. I bet he eats a lot of candy.

oiselet, do you live in Portland? OMG, it's vegan heaven there.

Oh, and going back to my stupid school health survey - I complained about that today. They said I was not the only one!

Im actually thinking of going raw vegan for one or two weeks (im a vegetarian anyway) but I tend to have problems with my digestions, so would you rather advice aganst it ? Or do you have any help how to avoid these problems ? tia

^Cooked food is generally easier to digest, so I would be careful going raw if I were you.

^^ Perhaps you could figure out what percentage raw you're eating now, and kick it up 5% or so, see what happens. Your digestion is IMO a very important part of your health ... no need to do something radical to upset it.

cestmagique, I agree with your thoughtless and greedy point ... but it's a little challenging to find anything about the culture at large that that doesn't describe  I think things are getting better though ... I think more people than ever are thinking more about what they're doing, the implications, cause and effect, etc.

I really appreciate vegans and vegetarians who do their thing without judging others. I continue to believe that harshly judging others is far more dangerous to the soul (and perhaps body as well) than eating meat ;)

When people ask What do you eat?, it's an innocent question. What you're doing is completely outside their paradigm, and it's an opportunity to expand their world view a bit :innocent: I get a similar question about 99% of the time when I say I don't watch TV (so what do you do?!) ... I'm not offended by it ... I realize that in the last several decades something that didn't previously exist has taken over many people's nonworking and nonsleeping hours, and they literally don't know what they would do without it.

I don't think the 'do not kill' commandment can be taken to refer to animals, since it's bookended by numerous requests for animal sacrifice :innocent: I don't find that first part of the Bible at least to be any kind of model for how to treat people or animals. Paul makes reference at one point to not muzzling the ox who's treading out the corn & the laborer is worthy of his hire ... that's the best example that comes to mind of an injunction to treat animals fairly. At the same time, I'm not aware of anything in the Bible that says you should eat meat. There's the part where the earlier dietary restrictions are lifted that says it's now OK to eat pork, shellfish, etc. ... but I'm not aware of anything anywhere that says you, the man or woman on the street, have to. I've noticed that some people believe that their entire belief system and pretty much all famous quotations are in the Bible ... someone once told me 'No man is an island' (John Dunne) was from the Bible :innocent:

I don't live by or preach the Ten Commandments dear...I just find these things ironic..especially when Born Agains have preached to me about being a vegan and whatever bs they believe.Eat for yourself.

I just picked up a book at my library called "Living Raw Food" by Sarma Melngailis. I haven't read it entirely, but it's full of recipes. In the beginning, the author talks about how she changed since turning raw vegan. It might be an interesting read for you. ^_^ I didn't notice a change in my digestion when I started eating more fresh vegetables and fruits. (I stayed constipated.):innocent:

Oh, I love being called dear ... :innocent: But then, who doesn't? :p

Just thought I'd mention the context in case anyone decided to argue vegetarianism on the basis of this particular piece of literature ... something I would not choose to do, because it's pretty hard to get a foothold anywhere. I mean, even Jesus served fish. OTOH, neither can you use it to make an argument that anyone is required to be an omnivore. Didn't want you to end up with egg ... or egg replacer ... on your face.

Nothing wrong with those 10 commandments ... I mostly consider them a bare minimum, but people could stay out of a heap of trouble by paying a bit more attention to them. Just think of the huge chunk of celebrity gossip that would be wiped out ...

i've read a few things that suggest that it's easier on your digestion if you eat raw food before 4 or 5 pm and cooked food after that (something about digestion and sleep...can't quite remember but it sounded like it made a lot of sense when i read it!). Maybe you could try a 'two-thirds' raw diet - raw breakfast and lunch but cooked dinner? That might help your digestion whilst still trying out the whole raw veganism? Just a thought.

A raw food diet can sometimes fix what was wrong with your body (as what is causing the digestion problems), but I'd ask your doctor first. Or try it and see what happens.

I love this blog, it has some pretty yummy recipes on raw foods.

Digestion problems? What about taking fiber supplements like Metamucil and Benefiber before turning raw vegan?

I was a raw vegan for a few months and I think it's amazing. Some foods yeah might be a little difficult to digest, or takes longer, but at least you're not left with unwanted extra crap like oils and stuff.

And to cestmagique, I think it highly depends on how the food is cooked whether or not it is digested properly. I'm pretty sure steamed vegetables is far better for digestion than battered vegetables that are deep fried.

My mother used to get "tofu pups." Omg, they are the worst things in the world. NEVER GET THEM.

... Well sure, but I was saying that cooked food is easier to digest than raw food, not that all cooked food is equally easy to digest. Obviously there can also be cooked foods that aren't easy to digest, although I don't see why fat content alone should make something hard to process (like with fried vegetables).

Well, fats can't dissolve in water-based digestive enzymes, which are the majority in the digestive system, so it takes forever to digest. That's why fat-energy is stored much longer than carbs, sugars, and proteins.
