The Vegetarian & Vegan Thread

^ definitely know what you mean about feeling 'lighter'

the "processed" foods i buy are soy milk, natural peanut butter, hommus (although i try to make my own), tofu and curry paste.

oh and _sometimes_ unsalted corn chips.

^ :yuk: Unsalted sounds not so good. It was when my friend told me, "Your sweet potato chips are disgusting," that I decided that just because they're healthy doesn't mean I should sacrifice deliciousness.

o wait, they're *lightly salted* haha.

i've tried sweet potato chips before, they were quite delicious, beetroot too.

Were they the Terra brand? My work sells the sweet potato and veggie ones. They don't have any seasoning, so they are boring without a dip like hummus or possibly salsa.

I never get potato chips because I crunch through the entire bag in no time! Better not to get things that are easy to eat in one sitting.I make hummus, make sure to use lemon though. And garlic.

You could always make home-made guacamole. It's really simple, and you could use all organic ingredients easily ^_^

^ Thanks! Lately, the "processed" foods I have been eating are things like mustard, Rice Chex cereal, Triscuits, hummus, peanut butter, pita pockets or pita bread, and rice milk. Everything else has been fresh fruits and vegetables. :D I take pride in that I have done a 180 in my eating habits, actually enjoying produce more than I ever have before.

My grocery store has a 'grind your own' peanut butter station ... I don't think they're that uncommon. You might see if there's one around you. That way it's absolutely fresh. Almond butter and cashew butter are also yummy, but they don't have that strong PB flavor ...

Does anyone here make their own veggie/bean burgers? I need a good recipe. :chef:

:woot: That's a great idea! I've switched from soy to rice or almond milk. I thought my only alternative to cow's milk would be soy, but this thread had really opened my eyes to so many different options. Good work, thread.

Today, I stopped by my library to pick up Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World. It gets my tummy rumbling! I'm going to make some for me and the other girl in the play because we're both vegans. The directors told us ahead of time that the goodies would include cookies and crackers and cheese. :D

^thank you, that recipe sounds great! It's been a while since I've had quinoa.

By the way... does anyone here used non-dairy cheeses? I'm curious about them but I figure there could easily be some really awful brands out there.

Oh,grind your own peanut butter reminds of the fantastic PCC coop store I grew up near in Seattle! SO different than Whole Foods...sometimes I make lentil patties, which are so delicious.I love anything crunchy and a little salty,so they are perfect.I am trying to buy bulk beans instead of canned,as you can't recycle aluminum so that's not very sustainable. It's tricky when I went my garbanzos fritos tight away! you have to soak and cook them and even the shortest method (boil 3 minutes, soak 3 hours) takes FOREVER.

I haven't used a non dairy cheese...I either go the whole way vegan or cave in with dairy.I haven't had any dairy this year and intend not to even in "kaas land",my nickname for the Netherlands, this summer.I gained weight eating a big dinner at 8:30 (TOO LATE to digest food!) with lots of cheese and bread.Makes you feel like a slug!

Not sure what you mean about you can't recycle aluminum? Are you not able to recycle it where you are?

Today, I got my town's yearly "Best of Bites 2010" magazine in the paper. Only 2 of the restaurants were vegetarian-friendly. I wish the town would be more aware of more vegetarian -even vegan!- friendly options. A lot of tea houses were listed which pleases me since I love trying different tea flavors. But that doesn't mean anything as far as eating goes.

I'll bet in larger cities there are so many more opportunities to find fantastic places to eat. ^_^ That is sort of the downside to being a vegan in certain locations of the States.

That's correct,we cannot recycle aluminum as well as paper and non corrugated cardboard. So I have all these cans and am trying to buy in bulk instead.

This area doesn't have a lot of culinary variety at all and it's annoying how much of the menu is meat friendly in restaurants of cuisine that supposedly is vegetarian friendly.

Really? Wow, those are the only things we can recycle at school...

On another note, apparently Panda Express orange sauce is now being sold in grocery stores. Does anyone know what's in it? If it's vegan, I know what I'll be pouring on all of my meals for the next...forever. (Orange chicken is my number one most-missed food.)

I've only ever been to DC in the States, and the vegetarian food in restaurants was terrible. In alot of places all I could get was green salad or fries  In the end I just ate enough at breakfast to keep me going through out the day as it was the meal where I could easily find stuff I could eat.

Gee, I hate preachy veg*ns (term used to cover vegetarians/vegans of all kinds). The other day one accused me of not being a 'proper' vegetarian because I'm not an ethical veg*n. I just laughed and walked away - people like that do amuse me greatly. (BTW - this isn't aimed at anyone on here, just a little random musing!)
