The Vegetarian & Vegan Thread

what am I judging? one of my best friend is eating fish but no other meat. of they want go for it.i just hate that my mom wants to make me eat fish and doesn´t get that i don´t want to

My boyfriend is vegetarian but he doesn't feel too bad about eating pastry with animal fat, or sweets with gelatin. He doesn't actively buy them but if he's given them he'll eat it.

i don´t wanna eat anything that ever lived!

Big problem then, you can't eat anything :p . I know what you mean but when I read I was like  .

Your mom is worried about your health, you should see it this way instead of thinking she just doesn't wanna let you do what you want and unless you know something about nutrition she's probably right (see a nutritionist to have a balanced healthy diet, it's not so easy!). If you're a teen it's probably better if you eat fish at least from time to time.

I learnt this nutrition stuff at shcool. we talked about vegetarian for a half year, wrote tons of test about them. I talke to my doctor about my health. he said if my body can´t hadle i will feel it. i don´t feel anything yet. he gave me vitamin pills, to take them. they actually stopped my hair lost lol, but i lost so many hairs when i actually ate meat, now it stopped. also I actually gained since i don´t eat meat. he alos took my blood and tested it. and he said he can´t believe i don´t eat meat because the test was so positiv

I believe she's saying that plants are alive too. When I was a child I read this Roald Dahl story I've never forgotten about someone who could hear plants screaming when they were cut. I've also read studies about the chemical changes that happen with plants when someone is approaching with the intent to kill them, etc. Lots of people say that plants can't feel pain because they have no central nervous system, but that seems a very mammal-centric way of thinking to me :innocent:

So you can eat without killing something by eating fruits and nuts, but some plants that don't have to be are killed in the harvesting process.

What I take away from this is that it's very hard to exist as a member of our species on this planet without taking another's life, whether plant or animal, and that you simply have to do it with all the respect and consciousness you can.

i'm sure it has been very healthy for you. :flower: i was a vegetarian (and not the healthiest eating vegetarian at that) for 10 or so years, and when i had my cholesterol tested, my total cholesterol was 145.... after eating meat for a couple of years, it was up to 185. i'm eating vegan now, cooking for myself a lot and really enjoying my food.

tonight i'm making stewed tofu and potatoes in miso gravy from 'vegan with a vengeance' (a vegan cookbook packed with super tasty recipes). i highly recommend it to anyone interested in vegetarian and vegan cooking. the recipes are imaginative and really diverse, and most of the ingredients are easily found and inexpensive. ^_^

It's great to be a vegan... free from killing animals... jsut becoming natural... but still one has to work on not just becoming vegan by educating themselves properly and knowing what is right for their own bodies.

Yeah starches that are cooked from grains and beans are to be limited to a certain body type and needs... always the nutritionists will specify exactly for a person his/her needs in serving sizes and would help about the vitamin part is to eat variety of fruits and veggies... I believe the best type of carbs are the fruits carbs they are easily digested they give their own enzymes and digest themselves if eaten alone.

do you excuse the ignorance, who can explain me the difference between a vegetarian feeding and vegan? and as you have done to explain your change of feeding to your firends and parentis? and them as they have reacted? It would be me useful because my parents are contrary to this type of feeding and they would never understand.

I heard that cookbook was really good! You've inspired me to buy it. Are there certain recipes in there that you think are particularly good?

I like vegetarian and vegan but I don't like tofu... I guess if for protein and calcium raw nuts and seeds are better choice along with fruits and veggies variety.

Vegetarian = sometimes eat dairy (eggs, milk, cheese, yoghurt) but never flesh (e.g. pork, salmon, beef) or crustacea (e.g. mussels, oysters, shrimp). Does not wear leather, suede, fur etc.

Vegan = No animal products. This means eating no product that was once an animal or came from an animal including all seafood.

As far as telling friends and family - tell them that you don't judge the way they eat, that you are doing it for yourself, it is a lifestyle choice. Show them that it is a healthy option. There is also lots of research you can do to show it is healthy, which always helps.

so far my favorite one is 'chile sin carne con mole', which is a really tasty and unique chili made with seitan (but i use texturized vegetable protein since i haven't quite gotten my seitan making technique down:doh:), cocoa powder, molasses and cinnamon. it might sound strange but it is so good! i eat it alongside the cornbread recipe found on the ppk.com site. the stew recipe that i mentioned above is great too. the mango ginger tofu is good but a lot of work. the horseradish crusted tofu is great served with wasabi mashed potatoes.... veryvery satisfying.

oh and it's probably not the healthiest item in the book, but i made the the french toast tonight and it was _amazing_... better than any i've eaten so far. :flower:

Yeah research and one has to do one's homework to learn about the safety in doing a right diet for his/her body.

I don't care for meat also... so most of the time I'm a vegan and sometimes vegetarian that would be because sometimes some foods have hidden dairy products inside them... so to be vegan is to do an extra homework to learn more to do things right. I rarely eat meat , it can be once , twice a year... yeah so I consider myself vegetarian...it's not the slips that makes me who the person is... I believe what the person does mostly all the time that's what he/she is.
Philosophy !! haahha... Ok takecare!

I was wondering if it's really the case that vegetarians don't wear leather because most of the veggies I know do, including me. I wear leather shoes and also have a leather jacket but I don't eat meat at all and would still consider myself a veggie. I thought it was only the vegans who also exclude all leather products and fur etc. Or maybe it's just a personal thing.
