Miss Frank were voted off the X Factor last night after singing for survival against show favourite Danyl Johnson.
The judges were shocked that the two acts scored the lowest public vote, with Simon Cowell calling it 'a joke' that the teacher faced the boot.
Miss Frank, the trio who were put together at this year's boot camp, had received rave reviews from the judges after Saturday night's show and even became a trending topic on Twitter after their performance.
But last night, the judges were split on who to save. While Simon and Dannii Minogue plumped for Danyl, Louis voted for his group to stay.
Cheryl Cole had the deciding vote, and chose Miss Frank, who had performed Love Don't Live Here Anymore, to stay so the decision would be split.
It meant that the act with the lowest public vote, Miss Frank, were sent home.
Louis said: 'I cannot believe these two acts are in the bottom. These two acts are amazing performers. I think it's unfair.'
And Simon was also shocked at the result, which saw Danyl reprising his audition piece, With A Little Help From My Friends.
'I have never ever been so surprised in my life. If this is your last performance Danyl, I've never heard anyone go out on such a high.
'This is a joke you're in this position,' he told Danyl. 'It's a total joke.'
Cheryl and Dannii looked torn, but both have called Danyl 'cocky' in the past. Cheryl rolled her eyes at her fellow judge after Simon gave his act a standing ovation.
After the show, Danyl told the ITV2 spin-off show that he expected to do badly. He said: 'I kind of felt it. Maybe I'll just have to try harder.'
But a source backstage told The Sun: 'He looked like a broken man when he came offstage - absolutely destroyed.
'He was stunned to be in the bottom two, he thought he was the best thing in the show.'
Simon Cowell: 'Just why are twins John and Edward more popular than Danyl Johnson?'
Simon Cowell says he wants to get to the bottom of why the nation seems to hate Danyl Johnson after the singer's shock finish in the last two hopefuls of X Factor at the weekend.
Danyl was the show favourite last week, only to leave the judging panel flabbergasted when he came joint last in the public vote, along with girl band Miss Frank. The panel sent Miss Frank home, but it left Simon scratching his head over why the talented music teacher, 27, didn't do better.
He said: 'I always believe that the public should vote for these competitions. Having said that, he wasn't the worst person last night. So something isn't clicking.'
There have been numerous reports in the papers that Danyl has been bullying the other contestants, with Louis Walsh branding him 'vile'. And Kandy Rain's Azi Jegbefume said 'he's really two-faced'.
Simon added last night: 'I think I'm going to have to get to the bottom of lots of the stories that are going around, people saying he is bullying them and stuff. I don't believe them but I think that they have an effect and we're going to have to clear that up.
'People just don't seem to like him. There have been stories written about him that people are not getting on with him, and he is going to have to put his side of the story across.'
Simon looked rather cheesed off as he left the studio last night, and he certainly has his work cut out for him this week.
Danyl said last night: 'We try not to read the papers much. I just don't know how the public are voting. I'm just going to have to make sure I pick the right songs.'
Mel B appeared on ITV2's Xtra Factor last night, where she offered her two pence worth on Danyl. The Spice Girl said: 'Maybe he has been a little bit too cocky. He should be a bit more sensitive.'
Smiling broadly and posing for photographers, the two solo singers appeared to make a point of dispelling the rumours that they are anything but the best of friends.
But their pasted on smiles looked less than natural as the pair left the north London house they share with all the finalists.
