The thing about skulls and such... I think that is in an effort to try to mainstream the Punk/Goth style of fashion. I am NOT a rock junkie. I'm not even a serious fan of rock music... of almost ANY kind. Somehow, it's skulls and Vans sneakers appealing to some of the casual people. Because let's face it- Jennifer Lopez had on a beautiful dress at the Oscars last night, but would you ever see a fashion icon like J-Lo, Kate Moss, or anyone like that adorning themselves in skulls and such? Let's face it. (Generalization) Everyone loves rock music. I'm not seriously offended with Vans sneakers. My thing is basically this rock fanatic stuff. This is at least better than the country Western stuff of last year and the year before. But still, nothing stylish about these skulls and stuff. I think most Goth types don't even care if they look like gems strutting their stuff at runways like in Milan or Paris or wherever. Sorry. Just not a rock person. If anything, I'm more in the realm of electronica (techno, dance, trance, rave, etc.). I wouldn't dress up myself in the electronica sense, but at least there's something to like besides rock or rock influences.
Now back to tucking pants/jeans into boots. Here are some functional examples:
fishing boots -

jockey boots -

Both of these serve functional purposes and are the only ones allowed to wear boots with pants tucked in. If not used in horrid ground conditions or on super-cold days, the look actually becomes just as dumb as leggings under skirts. The two links are more of functional usages of pants into boots. Some say that tucking skinny jeans into boots provides a slimming effect. Slimming at the expense of looking overdressed. Part of the reason girls got those skinny jeans was to have dumb '80s-inspired looks or to comfortably tuck jeans into boots. There are plenty of alternatives. One can always wear cropped pants, gaucho pants, skirts, shorts... so many other options than the skinny jean and those knee-high boots. I never understood the jeans-tucked-into-boots thing outside of functional use. I try to be functional if I can. For example, I had my cargo jeans (before I could no longer fit into them). I tended to use the extra cargo pockets to carry stuff. I think I even carried my old TI-83 calculator once in the lower pockets. Reason why I disliked certain trends was because of how unfashionable certain function-focused styles go. Flood pants (also called "highwater pants") are perfectly fine because almost any style of shoe or sandal works best. But regular jeans tucked into boots for when it is not extremely cold or extremely messy to walk... there's a problem. It's no double standard. Some things work much better than others.
