THE TRENDS SO FAR
WITH New York and London Fashion Week behind us and Milan just beginning, there are already plenty of trends emerging to shape our wardrobes next summer. The floral obsession that took hold over the last few months will tempt in a swarm of butterflies when the sun next comes out - either featured on colourful printed chiffon, glittering brooches or bold metal handbag clasps. With ladylike prim the new first rule in fashion, flesh-baring dresses have been banned in favour of plenty of old-fashioned jersey styles and high collared shirts, leading to the inevitable historical references. If you must show some skin, simply roll up your new baggy trousers or shorts, but in the main everything has gone as girly as can be: short-sleeved jumpers, pinafore dresses and ruffled blouses with a good dose of broderie anglaise to finish. Even bikinis are more conservative then ever: cut low on the hip below classic, bandeau tops. Designers are having just as much fun with fabrics - bringing on the glamour with metallic satins and sequin shawls, while Liberty, gingham, batiq and floral prints are mixed up like never before. Finish the look with a touch of crochet and add as many Roman sandals, hip-to-breastbone belts, wooden beaded necklaces, wedge espadrilles and tooled leather handbags as you dare. Now, what do the Italians have to offer…?
