UK Glamour F/W 2019.20 : Victoria Beckham by Jan Welters

I like that you can see her skin texture, some fine lines and all her pores. It hasn't been airbrushed into oblivion, and that's good because she is promoting her makeup line.

On another note, while I get that oily skin is her "look", it appears quite wrong for a cover. Like she has been working out in full makeup and this is the result.

Brand Beckham in full swing. The cover just so happens to drop the day after her runway presentation. Sickening.

I doubt this cover will sell well, objectively speaking. The subject is mature but the design juvenile? Huge disconnect. And this magazine is already on it's last legs.

If this edition has a reason to exist, then good for them.

For someone who is apparently trying to dissociate herself from her posh spice persona, this is very posh spice of her!
I like it! I like Victoria being Victoria and not her playing the normal « natural » designer.
When you are someone who rehearse your exits from the lobby of your Hotel, you needs to give us glamour!

I like Victoria being Victoria and not her playing the normal « natural » designer.

But that's just it, you can't have it both ways. I like some of her designs personally, and she's clearly making a go of it. But minutes later you see her on all these covers. So desperate to be fawned over and to be a celebrity. It detracts from her role as designer.

What an original concept! Bravo

She is launching her her beauty line, I did expect a cover or two coming. I do like how posh spice these are. I think that as much as we want her to disassociate from her brand, she is the brand's biggest endorser, a walking advertisement. I mean what's the difference between her on a cover promoting her line that Michelle or Alicia on covers in LV shot by pre-approved photographer. Also, the packaging of the makeup is really really great.

I picked up a copy from the shop today - all three covers were evenly available. I bought the white one; I liked the clean skin look of it.

As ever, the magazine is printed on that thicker, textured paper, and the chaotic, scrapbook-style art direction inside remains the same as previous issues. 190 pgs.

The ads are mostly perfume and jewellery.

PRETTY, POWERFUL is a 4 pg look at catwalk beauty. "Patriarchal beauty stereotypes are being reclaimed, reworked and restyled this season with a fiercely feminist agenda". If you say so.

There's an article about call-out culture, for those who haven't already reached burn-out from hearing about the world of fashion and beauty influencers.

There's a lengthy feature about pubic hair, an interview with Queer Eye's Antoni Porowski (unconnected to pubic hair), an article about not being a perfectionist, an interview with Charlie Hill about her transgender journey, and a look at sex-related plastic usage (condoms, sex toys etc). The Victoria Beckham feature is 8 pgs long.

MAKE IT RAINBOW is a 6 pg beauty editorial featuring prismatic highlighters on the skin of model Ajak Deng, shot by Jamie Nelson.

GOTHIC GIRL is an 8 pg fashion/beauty editorial featuring Florence Pugh in grunge-inspired looks, shot by Simon Emmett, styled by Camilla Kay.

BRAVE (RE)NEW WORLD is a 12 pg fashion editorial about upcycled and recycled clothing, with model Joony Kim, shot by Andreas Ortner, styled by Alexandra Fullerton.

WE'RE SO HAIR FOR IT is a 10 pg portfolio of people with different types of face/body hair, shot by Anna Daki.

Then it's back to articles about sustainable perfumes, vampire beauty (blood used in beauty treatments), an interview with Zendaya, the cult of whitewashed wellness, and then it's the usual magazine waffle at the back about holidays.

I don't ever mind buying the printed ghost of UK Glamour, because it only costs £2 and comes out twice a year. However, it's very juvenile, which makes me wonder about Victoria Beckham on the cover, because her product lines are hardly made of the stuff teens dream about. It speaks to ME, but maybe not to someone waiting for their student loan to arrive on Monday, who won't be in the market for spending £48 on a smoky eye compact.
