UK Vogue December 2021 : Lady Gaga by Steven Meisel

Only the Gaga's & the Pavarotti's eds save this issue & the rest are simple with the aesthetic of a clothes catalogue. It's very sad than Vogue has become, now every issue will see a bunch of reprints with this direction.

My subscription copy is yet to arrive, but looking at the uploaded content here, I'm not missing out on much.

What an absolute dud of an issue. Angelo Pennetta's story feels so out of place for a December issue and Oliver Hadlee Pearch feels more suited to January. Rafael Pavarotti's work, as vibrant as his story is here, has never done it for me either, so even his contribution falls on deaf ears also.

Nevertheless, I'm still obsessed with the cover itself and Gaga by Steven Meisel feels like a huge moment and cause for celebration, so I won't hold a grudge over Edward Enninful for this - and November was well and truly faultless on all accounts.

I could understand the hype for the last issue but it did nothing for me. This month, again, I sort of appreciate the effort/diversity of stories but the outcome is forgettable. The small nude picture of Gaga pasted onto the opening double page spread is so desperate and a crime against decent art direction. Not particularly bothered by her feature.

Shame that Rome is always shot by basic photographers (Dufort and now Penetta) - waste of a location and all that flying/environmental destruction for nothing, again. Pavarotti's editorial is a miss. Nope. Not this time. Styling is too much for me. Lastly OHP's work with Emrata in M Le Monde last week totally eclipses whatever he did here. Sometimes his work is very good and other times it looks like it could be done by anyone/any basic former McLellan assistant.

I cried a little when I first saw this... This is so surprising, so unexpected.
My teenage years were filled with Gaga-mania. But there were moments of disappointment and doubt. Her recent music was not catchy enough to me. Her looks were not that creative anymore. This time, I am once again excited for her and her new film. Maybe it's my vogue obsession, this photoshoot with the legendary Steven Meisel gave me more thrill than things like a new album or an Academy nomination.
Also it means a lot to her fans. People try to defame her and deny her talents in her down years but this made me believe that what she has in her will sooner or later take her higher. So is the case with the lives of you and me. You have to stick to what you believe in and beware that life is not full of positive things. Work hard and wait for the right time...I got so emotional.
The pictures are amazing. She doesn't have a slim figure like a model but she has one of the strongest personalities on the planet and she looks like Sophia Loren in the naked picture. Honestly, not a fan of the cover. I prefer the italian cover. Best wishes to her new film!

disappointing main ed. Meisel stays in his comfort zone again and does his half baked Avedon-esque photographs as usual. Also why the styling is all over the place?

Got my copy in the post yesterday, and I echo other statements on here: the issue is only ok.

I'm still in shock we got Gaga by Meisel, as a fan of both of them it's a dream come true and I never thought I'd see the day; I'm so happy it's for my home edition of Vogue too. The shoot is just glorious - really, really beautiful pictures. I have to say though that some pages are spoiled a little by the layout. I wasn't impressed to see that gorgeous nude shot overlayed with another image on top and clunky typography - it was crying out to be a text-free spread and, if it had to be the opener, a more minimal art-direction would have been much better. The second nude shot deserved its own spread too, but I guess they just couldn't afford an extra couple of pages. Although I will say, the issue does seem jammed with ads. Lots of perfume samples of course, but what I like about British Vogue is it always feels substantial when you pick up a copy - I can't say I'm too fussed that it's a result of fluff content and adverts: I just like the feel of a full magazine.

It's A Trip is the other highlight of the issue - it's so stunning in print and feels like exactly what we need in a December issue; it has that vibrant, festive feeling without being a cliché Holiday theme. No doubt it's the one we'll see reprinted in every other edition over the next few weeks. The rest is a pass for me. I think the jeans shoot in any other month would be fine, but it just feels like such a let down for December, especially after Edward's Editor's Letter where he goes on about how special the last issue of the year is to him. It's not bad, but it's not anything special. Maybe they felt they needed more balance in the issue, but if there's one time when you can go all-out fashion fantasy for every story, surely it's December?

I don't remember anything else from it off the top of my head, which isn't a good sign. Got to say, it was disappointing to see that every shot from the Gaga story had already been released. It seemed they were posting much more from the main ed on Instagram than usual, so I just assumed it was going to be an extra long story with a couple of shots we hadn't seen yet. Not to say that what they printed isn't enough, because it is, it's just a shame the social media strategy is to put the entire issue out there before it even hits the floors of subscriber's hallways.

I think the December issue did not go very well in sales, the stores are full of copies, in supermarkets, in magazine stores etc..., the November issue with Adele was sold out in a few days

There's a certain decadence about Meisel that he is only able to manifest with images.
