Urban Mommies: Style scene?

my ***!!!......

I AM NOT DOWN WITH THAT AT ALL...
it is rude and selfish...
and that is what nursery school is for....
or throw a dinner party at home with willing participants..(aka -victims)

but keep them out of the cafe!!!
get a sitter and have a civilized meal for a change...
it's good for you!!!...

ah, but restricting mommies to the playgrounds is what keeps them frumped up. and how else will little morgan grow up to be a civilized dining companion. the city is the training ground, the cafe, the simulation.

Absolutely true about the training ground for life, but the loud voice?

my favorite is when i'm with my kids and they're being quiet and calm and certainly not disturbing anybody but i'm still getting the glares while the *censored* right next to us is practically screaming into his/her cel phone...gotta love that

and imagine how great it will be for all of us when the *censored* has a kid of their own......

OY!...
...

just advocating more tolerance. an awful lot of adults don't behave in a desirable way but it's not common philosophy that they should be kept at home, along with their spouses or partners. to say an urban mom should stay out of cafes isn't very fair. of course if your kid is tired or in a phase, it is not the time to expect him or her to sit for an hour at lunch. but if the child is reasonably well-behaved, then other patrons should quietly put up with the occasional dropping utensil, or shriek of laughter that will go along with a dining child, as well as the unfortunate equippment (strollers, etc. no one finds those more cumbersome or annoying than the moms who have to push the dang things around anyway). so we just need some compassion. i can't think of a single person i know who wasn't a child at some point or other. :D
so we all must, therefore, have had moms as well. i wouldn't want anyone to be mean or to glare at my mom.

hmm...
well my mom was pretty mean and did a lot of glaring herself if we weren't well-behaved kids...

i think the parents need to know when and where to bring their kids and need to be responsible for teaching their kids how to behave appropriately in any given situation...

and until they learn...
they should be kept away from those situations...
plenty of places are more 'kid-friendly'...
ie-more open and less crowded...
which i think is less stressful on the kids anyway, no?...

my mom taught us well...and quickly...
i was going to the opera at the Met by the 4th grade...

i agree but isn't it just about good manners and being respectful of others? that seems to have gone out of fashion...and in my experience it's certainly not only moms...

softgrey and nycmom - i just could not agree with you both more.

here's to a civilized life (with kids)!

Before you know it the holiday season will be here...ladies be prepared for school holiday events!

What NOT to wear:

-Anything with a reindeer, candy canes or christmas trees
-polyester velvet
-trophy wife furs
-the "we're leaving for Vail right after" look: mukluks, fur vests, self-tanner overdose
-yoga gear/running clothes
-mephistos
-shedding pashmina
-the dreaded "mom jeans"
-anything inspired by L'il Kim or Beyonce
-see through
-dominatrix boots
-no spots, stains, holes, hanging hems etc.
-the same thing you wore last year

please add to the list!

I'm a MOM.. and none of this is ME.
I wear heals, I have long hair, I dress stylish as does my daughter.
I hate this stereotype

Those stupid colorful scrunchies that are Red and green!! I see "unstylish" moms wearing them all the time during the holidays...
Or those reindeer/Santa Clause earrings. <<ARGG!

I have a bit of a problem with "reactionary mom dressing"... some are almost panicked that once a mom they will be labeled as anything less than hip.
I live in perfectly plastic orange co. and it really is so prevalent for moms to be uber blinged out, with 22s on their suvs, rock hard t*ts airbrushed a hideous orange hue, the ubiquitous blonde hair, hard body, and of course the stilletos, tight bootcut jeans usually sevens, some sort of heavily glue gunned sequined party top that of course reveals their latest enhancements... oh and don't forget the botox... it perfectly masks any sort of hint as to what kind of a day they are really having. This just screams FASHION DON'T.

I'm a mom too...and none of this is me either. However the stereotype exists because all of this is out there in the mom fashion world. The reactionary mom look is also one of the stereotypes. I love the phrase "reactionary moms"... they are the Stepford mommies and just as hard on the eyes as the frumps in their mom jeans. The either or-ness of the mommy stereotype is merely a reaction to our youth obsessed culture- you either give up or try too hard!
