US Vogue March 2009 : Michelle Obama by Annie Leibovitz

I'm happy that they put Michelle on the cover, but I really don't like the picture. Not really an attractive facial expression there.

Actually I'm not too disappointed, as I was worried I would be. That color looks fabulous on her and honestly, I'm just happy to see her on the cover at all.

The one thing I really would have changed would be the photographer. Irving Penn, simple as that. The man knows how to take a timeless, flawless portrait. I would have really liked to see something a little more stately instead of the more casual, natural approach that Leibovitz took. Something of her standing, maybe, 3/4 profile, darker, richer backdrop. But then again I can see why they didn't go that route because that really isn't the image that Michelle Obama gives off. Still, one can dream....(that she'll be around long enough to do another cover)

OMG not the best picture of her:shock:. Ive seen better pictures of her in the gossip magazines. Still she is a very lovely lady and can transmit it through pictures.

Oh no she looks a little uncomfortable. I wish they made her laugh for a real, genuine smile.

And the beige background is so dull. Can't they mix it up a little? Put her next to a wall of flowers or something?

Can her facial expression be more weird ? the smile is kinda fake

Do you mean something like this shot Leibovitz took of her and was in january issue?I actually think although like you said its not very her, she can pull it off.

Oh and i second your invisble thought.^_^

I really don't get her appeal and can't understand why has been compared to Jackie Onassis, I don't find her sophisticated or ..... "beautiful".

Don't worry, you're not missing anything - it's just that all most women have to do these days is wear an A-line dress and pearls and suddenly they're the reincarnation of Jackie. ;)

Yes that's definitely along the lines of what I was thinking, and she does pull it off, most definitely. She has the sort of stature to pull off that kind of mood.

And I really don't think the comparisons to Jackie Kennedy are anywhere near as simplistic as you make them out to sound seanutbutter. It's more the fact that in a very short amount of time she has not only separated herself from the traditional and dated look that's so closely associated with being the First Lady, but she has also proven herself a lover of fashion and someone who has her own individual style that reflects the moment...much like Jackie Kennedy did when she became the first lady. Also like Jackie, Obama's style is very fuss free and contemporary. Even though Jackie's boxy jackets, A-line skirts and pillboxes look dated now, by the standards of the early 60's they were extremely modern and very un-fussy.

When I read she got this cover, it sounded really interesting to me. However they could have done a better cover :(, she still looks nice though

I agree. It's a nice cover, but it's really just average.

I'm beginning to come to the realization that I dislike almost everything Leibovitz does...I mean...her photoshopping can only be rivaled by America's Next Top Model. She's terribly overrated.

Irving Penn would have been a much better choice. I would have liked this cover to have felt more iconic...and I believe Penn would have been much more capable of delivering that type of image...more so than Annie, at least.

I have to say, that's a pretty silly statement.-_-

I'm more excited to see Carla Bruni Sarkozy than Mrs Obama. How many pages to the spring issue, please?

^something with her teeth. I've seen many people with big teeth half-smiling like they don't mean it.. she looks gorgeous though. I hope the entire story is not too woman-in-the-white-house conventional, cause they're not.

thanks for posting, plasticky!.

I agree with you 100% she would have looked better with a full on smile imo. But she looks great.

Yeah, she looks a bit uncomfortable, but, you know, she isn't a model. She hasn't spent her life perfecting how to look in a fashion spread.

I am just thrilled she got the cover.

i am happy with this cover...i think the thing that pleases me most is that anna finally took all the fug writing off the front, it's simple and 'nice' i guess the word is.
