V Magazine #109 Fall 2017 : Lady Gaga by Hedi Slimane

Once again the tiresome issue of 'relevance' is here. Blah, blah, blah. What you find 'relevant' and what someone else finds 'relevant' is entirely different. It's not a thing. You can't claim someone is or isn't relevant and have it be fact. It's all about perception.

You could argue that Madonna is relevant because of her past achievements and the fact she was the trail blazer just as easily as you could argue she is no longer selling records and has been effectively 'replaced' in the scene and therefore has no relevance.

There's a back and a forth for every single argument here, the only thing I find 'irrelevant' to be perfectly honest is the constant argument about relevance.

The shots of Kylie looks nice if you're aiming for a slightly upmarket version of Maxim/Playboy. I'm not bothered by the sex or tackiness, it's Kylie after all. I don't think she's the brightest of the Kardashian clan, so resorting to clichéd sultry posing was to be expected. The opening shot does look good though.

^^^ On a purely hot-blooded perspective, she is pure-sex gorgeous in those shots. Want to pander to your demographic on those primal instincts? That’s your cover.

I’m not going to get into just how shady, phoney and insufferable the person on the actual cover is, so I’ll leave out further name calling for now. And keeping in mind V Magazine is a popstar rag for the Victoria Secret/InstaGneration, then it’s more than appropriate to dismiss this cover as irrelevant (Can’t Gan feel it in the air who’s hot and who’s not…?????), with Kylie being more right for the September cover— for their demographic. Hell… Kylie and her sisters, all done Valley Of The Dolls (in other words, as themselves) up would have been awesome and totally owning everything people have been accusing them of being. V needs to own their trashy, disposable fun image, and Kylie and her sisters epitomize that attitude.

(This cover feels the equivalent of Smash Hits giving Olivia Newton-John a September cover in 1985… Nothing against Olivia— and she was cool and still releasing singles then [and she’s never consistently ripped off anyone, only to cry about it when called out], but she wasn’t exactly the shiny and new young thing in ’85, was she?)

How quickly we forget . She had the last Dec/Jan Harpers Bazaar US cover. She's also covered Vanity Fair and Porter (I think), back in the day.

I stand corrected regarding Harper's Bazaar, which slipped my mind because it wasn't a very memorable shot, but I obviously meant recently. V and CR FB was Gan-related. In fact, I'd say she only got HB because Glenda seemed to have taken a liking to her. Most of her peers book titles beyond the editors who normally stan for them.

If she's such a big pop star with an endless string of achievements, where are her covers? She should've had a 2nd US Vogue one by now, global Vogue, Interview, W, Pop, Dazed etc etc, . But my guess is that she may love fashion to the moon and back, but fashion doesn't seem to care for her at all.

She already has two Vogue US covers, though? Her second one was the 120th edition for September.

It's true that she has none of the others you have mentioned, but then again some of those magazines have always been interested in people different than her. I believe Rihanna has never had Pop or Dazed either.

The point I'm trying to make is that the way she's being marketed in the fashion press doesn't match how many covers she actually books. So I find it odd when magazines (and the Little Monsters) portray her as this force, which imo she's not. Having her guest edit magazines, work with Hedi Slimane and the like, giving her two covers in the same calendar year? That makes no sense for me.

Just an example, Lana, Rihanna, Adele, Selena, Taylor all have the standard commercial titles, but between them they've crossed over to ID, Dazed, Pop, W, V, Interview. This is without being chums with the EIC, which is telling because it means the magazine must be very confident they'll sell. Bear in mind that these women are her peers.

Mmmm! The Testino x Cortina editorial is delicious! So gorgeous. Both girls look amazing and the styling is so strong, too (except that big peplum with the belt moment, which is such a clunker amidst the rest of the very sexy looks).

Bruce Weber seems to like Taylor Hill - they've worked together a few times now. Wish they would stop shoehorning in her less attractive siblings every chance they could though - just because one of you is a model doesn't mean you all should be

OH Lord Thank you for saying that , this is so true I'm tired of to see them it's like they try to be a thing like Lucky Blue and his sisters and its getting annoying
I'm wondering if it's Taylor herself or IMG who push them in every Taylor work

Really nice to see Testino turning in some strong work
