Vogue España January 2023 : Anok Yai by Renell Medrano

This edition has appeared on my library reader, so it's legitimately out, 180 pages. The ads at the front are all for perfumes.

There's a long (15 or so pages) editorial at the front with Nyaueth Riam, shot by Wai Lin Tse, styled by Alba Roces, at the dark volcanic landscape of La Palma.

There are reprints of articles and edits that I've seen before... there's an interview with Ana Rujas, and short pieces about artists and creators which may be unique to this edition. There's no dedicated beauty editorial, just a selection of pieces with reprinted images and the occasional still life product display. The Living section looks at artists Adriana Meunié and Jaume Roig who live in Mallorca, plus a short piece on architect Lucía Rodrigo.

Let the actual editorials start... it opens with the cover story, which is followed by a reprint of the edit with Ida Heiner in UK Vogue, there's an interview with activist Koro López de Uralde, followed by the edit in UK Vogue with Mona Tougaard, then a reprint of the Natalia Vodianova sister story, then a rather stale helping of the Sylt edit with Abbie and Patrick S, and that's it.

If I'd never seen any of these editorials before, I'd probably not mind the range of stories that have been put into this January issue. Nothing would wow me, but I'd probably think they were nice if very bland.

I might also be influenced by not having seen my copy of UK Vogue (postal strikes) so there's a lot here that I haven't yet seen in print, so I haven't overdosed on these edits yet.

The colours are gorgeous and I like the delicate pose, but a few elements are off. Maybe a bracelet or something, a bit of colour on the makeup, and definitely a different hairstyle. But then it's a Stella Greenspan cover so that was never going to happen. Should be glad the styling is somewhat glamorous without turning Anok into the sort of OTT clown which is often how edgy stylists handle darker-skinned models.
