Vogue Japan April 2016 : Edie Campbell by Luigi & Iango

Holy smokes this is bad! The styling is atrocious and as much as I like Edie, she's doing nothing for this cover. They zapped all the life out of the color!

I don't think it's completely uncalled for in this case. I think magazines purposely make her look unattractive. It's kinda her thing. The only time I can think of that a magazine even tried to make her look pretty was US Vogue on their September cover.

To me, calling anyone ugly, at any time is ALWAYS uncalled for! I certainly don't find Edie ugly here, or on her UK & VP covers. What is atrocious is the styling, and art direction of this cover, its seriously awful.

If you don't want models to be described by her physical appearance, I think you are not in the right forums! Plus, being ugly is not bad or not worse than being beautiful. Some models are successful for being ugly. I'm beyond tired of euphemisms.

For A VJ cover, which are almost always terrible, I like it.
The outfit has a nice thick crunchy texture that photographs interestingly (It looks way better than on the runway)
and I like Edie and she looks pretty and dead modeling is so
OTM, it's this I don't give a F attitude which Edie is very good at.
It's a nice juxtaposition.

Not surprised you would think being called ugly is the same as being called beautiful, no shock there. I mean you called Sarah Jessica Parker ugly old lady recently in the cover rumor thread, so we don't have the same defitnion of what being rude, or giving a compliment is! And i love how you are trying to say that Edie being "ugly" (according to you) is a fact, its not because its objective, i find her to be beautiful.

She has PLENTY of editorials where she looks stunning, and was hired, especially in the start of her career, for the gorgeous 60s look she was sporting prior to cutting her hair. So i think her look has more variety, and her modeling skills are good enough to be hired for them, and be able to pull off a variety of looks, from edgy to mellow! So no, she is not hired just for that "non-beautiful" look!!!

That being said, this cover is awful. But what else do we expect from Vogue Japan in 2016?

^^Then, whenever a magazine/collection/campaign is released, what are people supposed to comment? Maybe this: "As aesthetics are subjective, I'm not supposed to make a statement. This could be everything: ugly, beautiful, bold, boring, exciting, amazing, lame... It depends on the eye of the beholder". Everyone commenting that... It is absurd. Of course it is my point of view cause it's me who is writing.

Being old is not worse than being young. Being beautiful is not better than being ugly. They are adjectives. The connotations you give to those adjectives are just your thing. For some people/cultures being old is better than being young. And many times, for the fashion industry, being ugly is better than being beautiful.

Oh yes, lets go philosophical on what adjectives mean! Sure! Maybe in some la la land that might be true, but on planet earth where i live, and the experience i have had as a woman in the real world, all of that sounds like such nonsense!

I am not saying you can't express your opinion, you should, but maybe how you express it could be a point to make in the future? Your comments about women being old & UGLY are all over this forum, i am not the only one who noticed them. And in ALL cases its pretty clear you are not giving compliments! Being called old and ugly is offensive, nothing childish about it, CALLING someone ugly, and then pretending its "just normal in some cultures" IS the epitome of childish!

I will also never agree that the entire career Edie has had, so far, is based on her being "ugly", never!

Look at the styling, what's the hoodie doing among all these looks? Also that tarty red-riding hood dress, seemingly made from a kitchen net?? So I agree, Mistuko is giving ADR way too much, unwarranted, power. I bet it was her idea to cover that atrocious D&G tassle shorts.

Luigi & Iango usually does wonders, but everything looks so monotonous here. Same awkward angles and poses over and over again, quite painful to watch.
