Vogue Japan July 2020 : Kendall Jenner by Giampaolo Sgura

Keeping with the positive energy vibe, I will not be commenting on the cover above. I will, however be taking a trip down memory lane. Remember that Kate Moss cover that was published a couple of months after the Japan Earthquake? That was optimism and positive energy. It's not inappropriate to publish a beautiful cover during tough times, especially for a magazine like this. Vogue is an escape, a dream. I remember thinking how fabulous it must have been to see such a beautiful cover instead of a blank cover or a stinky old rose. I don't want to be depressed. I want to look at something that will change my mood. Don't women want to escape?

This disaster (the most recent cover we are talking about, I mean) simply has no excuse, but the Great East Japan Earthquake and Covid-19 are apples and oranges: you CAN'T compare those two things. Also, you CAN'T compare fashion (magazines) then and fashion (magazines) now*!

*10 years ago we had (professional a.k.a. tall, skinny, good looking) models and celebrities; fashion magazines were partially business and partially dream. Now we have effing influencers/business ONLY! And that is what makes me sad and angry as well, but I did not choose it - it's simply the way it is. To cut the long story short, we can always dream HERE, and I am extremely grateful for that!

How funny consider Kendal the epitome of (lack of) "energy"

I remember reading in the cover rumor thread that Kendall shot for Vogue Japan wearing Longchamp. I believe this cover was shot before the lockdown was enforced, if that makes a difference of opinion.

That makes sense, but if you told me that this was shot in her garden on an iPhone I'd believe it. Looks like they forgot to focus the background, or even tell her that they were taking a photo.

I wouldn’t dare compare the two! The point is that you can still publish something that inspires women to dream, regardless of the severity of the current situation. Japan suffered one of its greatest disasters, yet the editors of Vogue Japan felt that they could still publish something like this. The headline was optimistic. How else would a person want to feel? My thinking might sound old fashioned, but I still believe in Fashion and what it can do for someone. I received my copy of US Vogue and I haven’t even picked it up after seeing the previews. On the other hand, I purchased the may issue of Vogue Paris, because that’s what I want to see. The couture editorial made me smile. US Vogue made me feel indifferent.

Yes, this was quite sadly shot long before lockdown. Back in early February in Miami.

Imagine having a portfolio as a model where it looks like your entire face had just been copied and pasted over and over and over again. I’ve tried to give this girl a chance but she has no redeeming qualities in print except when she’s smiling and not staring at the camera.

This is lackluster to put it mildly... but I cannot even blame Kendall. Kendall just had a great Holiday Mag cover with I&V... it looks like they used an outtake for the cover. The whole vibe including set, style and makeup... lackluster... I guess its the sign of the times...

Thak cover is amazing Rianne!!! What happened to fashion industry???

So Longchamp bought for the cover. Because I can't imagine anyone passing on a slew of models to go for a celeb model who does the least amount of work.

All the lockdown and Covid-19 situations are actually showing how fashion media lost its lustre. Mainstream magazines are just a disaster with no substance. Same is for 'niche' (V, i-D, Odda, 10, and others) who turned out to be lazy and predictable with all Tillmans, Schorrs, and Tellers doing same things over and over again. Whatever happened to element of surprise...

Every publisher is talking about budget cuts. Why though? Look what Jacquemus does, sometimes even by himself, and he isn't even a photographer or fashion editor. You don't need a huge team to produce high-quality image. Thinking of Vogue era during Diana Vreeland too. What a miracle had been produced by just Richard Avedon, Veruschka and Polly Mellen in Japan for October 1966 issue (sure, I read, the budget was crazy, but at least it was spent on travelling and not on the assistant of the assistant's assistant). Or young Avedon's Paris images where there was only him and the model in front of his camera.

We'll see what this crisis will bring as a result. Hopefully nothing else close to this cover. I feel bad for Kendall for being even part of it or any other model that could've been in her spot. With all the digital possibilities, postal services, showrooms and press offices all over the world, we get this bad and sad cover. I'm not going even start with magazines during WWII cause that would be the last nail in the coffin of modern fashion publications... Shame.

An absolute dud of a cover, and I’m currently having secondhand embarrassment for all parties involved. Kendall Jenner will never be a Gisele Bündchen and Giampaolo Sgura will never be a Richard Avedon but I expect far better than the outcome of this. It’s utterly lifeless, and we deserve better!
