W Magazine September 2004 : Julianne Moore by Michael Thompson

Every celebrity mag cover of W's looks the same-- though I'm not sure if that's the fault of the creative types at W, or a result of how unadventurous the celebs on the cover are.

W celeb covers fall into 3 categories:

1) Retro/Futuristic Styling (Jennifer Aniston, Britney Spears)
2) Misty Light-filtered Faery Child Styling (Kate Hudson, Julianne Moore)
3) Moody, Gloomy Styling (All right-- this one's more for models like Gemma)

Come to think of it... pretty much all of the editorials fall into those categories as well. No wonder I don't like W much.

(The fact that it's about the size of my entire torso doesn't make me that fond of the mag either...)

what?...you don't like that it's big?!?!...that's the whole beauty of it...big beautiful fashion photographs..

I can't wait to see these pictures. I saw the nude one on Entertainment Tonight, and she looked great. I hope I look as good as her when I'm her age - and someone to airbrush out my flaws. I think she's awesome, and overall, quite a good dresser. I think Bazaar is the best fashion mag, by the way. Vogue is a close second.

I think she looks fabulous... I can't wait to see the spread. I've really taken a liking to her lately.

 I agree. And it's awfully pretentious for a bankrupt little nothing magazine. It's like an alternative magazine for girls who shop at Urban Outfitters.

Agreed. It actually was part of the allure of V.

Julianne is so beautiful!

Fantastic cover, can't wait to see the editorial.

Has anyone ever done a "Which is the best magazine?" poll?

I like W's articles and I like that it's bigger. I'm a fan of the "Misty Light-filtered Faery Child Styling" as funnyfan so accurately put it, so I enjoy looking at the covers even though they are all the same.

but the celeb profile is not a fashion spread...W usually has 3 fashion stories a month just like every other magazine...

ok in the august issue of w...there's a spread of a (mostly) naked woman with these crazily long nails and a dolce and gabbana lace jumpsuit from the archives. while this made for intriguing photographs...there just WASN'T the new fashion i like to see in a fashion mag. vogue, elle, bazaar, for all of their faults, do still consitently feature good fashion.

the deal with W is that they focus more on the photography than other magazines...they are not such whores about using their advertisers and getting in credits...

they usually have an issue where they squeeze in a bunch of credits to make advertisers happy...but they aren't so commercial as other mainstream US fashion publications ...less like a catalog...which means that the photographers and the editors have more freedom to be creative...they are not limited to this seasons "it" items to come up with a great set of fashion photographs... this is what sets them apart from all the other mags and why most of the others all look the same...(do you remember how many times that chanel trench was photographed last season...)

if i just want to see the clothes...i can look on style.com...W isn't trying to sell you clothes...they're trying to sell dreams and fantasies... :flower:

just wait until the next issue...OCT...you guys are gonna DIE...hahahaha :innocent:

W September 2004: Julianne Moore

Just wondering what everyone thought of W magazine. September's issue (with Julianne Moore on the cover) is HUGE (over 550 pages) and I'm loving it! :woot:

I still need to see that infamous photo spread....

I'd love to see that issue but I don't think they sale it in Britain. :(

There were two great editorials, the one with Julianne (some amazing shots) and the one with Natalia (love the setting)

Relax, it's just one picture :P

I didn't like it. It was 480 pages of advertising and 20 pages of editorials. But then again I'm not into mainstream fashion so my view becomes biased. Some editorial images were good, I especially liked the McQueen dress image. I don't normally look at Vouge, W, VF, etc. but I purchased the subscription for $5 for my wife, and I leaf through it when we get it - always disappointed.

BTW, we have a thread like this already, maybe mods could merge these?

adam senn is also on the cover...right? coz if thats the one i can post it here.

I thought I'd be covered with Vogue and Bazaar, but I guess I'll go pick this one up as well.
