W Magazine Volume #1 2022 : The 'Best Performances' Issue by Tim Walker

The Tilda cover is, as usual, stunning and probably my favourite of the bunch. I also like Cate (of course) and Kristen (although I prefer her editorial pictures to the actual cover). GaGa's cut out face in highly camp as well.

I’m mesmerised by Denzel’s forehead on the cover. What on earth in going there?!?!?

All these covers do not appeal to me. They look awful. Just like the magazine itself.

Kind of surprised this magazine still exists. I won't go into the "Whatever happened to this magazine?!?" route cause it's just tiring and we all know that the old W is never coming back.

That's not an excuse imo. I don't need shoots to be Hollywood-sized productions. You can make something beautiful and exciting with a simple set. You just need to apply some effort and creativity. And that's what it's lacking here. Magazines with half of W's budget are delivering far better imagery. It's not an issue of money, it's an issue of talent.

Down through the decades, lack of money never prevented smaller magazines from producing inventive work, because they believed in what they were doing, they had something to prove, they had something they wanted to say.

So it's possible to produce good output on a shoestring, but you have to be fuelled by a compulsion to do it.

And in a world where low-effort blandness is what seems to get rewarded, there's no room for anything else, in case it might offend.

I usually enjoy the Best Performances Issues. I even defended last year's one (lol) but this is quite forgettable? I like Cate's cover, though.

Oh, I just love that Kristen Stewart cover! Love when she gets some proper styling and the retro wig looks stunning on her. Most of the other covers could pass, but none of them are really exciting. Tilda by Walker is always a hit, but she didn't need a sidekick on the cover.

All in all, one of the weakest ''Best Performances'' issues by Walker. Still miles ahead Teller's portfolios though. It's also quite sad how short it is, there are usually many more performers included.

There's more performers inside, those are just the covers.

The "W does Hollywood" thing sounds like a response to Vanity Fair having just one star one the cover. It's like "they don't make the Hollywood Issue anymore, so check out ours".

So odd to me they didn’t give Dakota a cover. The only thing I can think of as an explanation is that she’s going to be on one of their “Directors Issue” covers in a month or two, shot by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Tim also shot Kirsten Dunst but she wasn't on a cover, either. I would DIE of happiness if Jane Campion shot her for the Directors Issue. Wishful thinking, probably. Janicza Bravo would be a good choice to round out this dream trifecta.

I'm a Cumberbitch forever! Love his cover, even if it's comical.
