What to pack for a trip or extended stay

thanks runner...i like the candidness of most of these photos...it shows how we're all just big goofy kids at heart... without all the pretentiousness that traditionally surrounds fashion...

I'm flying to New York City for a halloween party. I want to be warm and comfy on the plane, but would also like to arrive looking stylish...

What's your outfit of choice when your traveling? (i think this is a good excuse to go shopping :ninja: )

Also, I have no idea what to pack. I don't have a huge suitcase, so my choices are pretty limited. I need to pick some key pieces that I can mix and match. I'll be staying for 4 days. :flower:

What's usually in your suitcase for a weekend stay?

oh my God lovespell it's so weird you did a thread on this because i was wondering about how to be comfortable and stylish when flying too. I'm always cold on flights, and I hate those horrible blankets they give you. I wear uggs, jeans, but not the hard denim type, and usually a black cashmere v neck and a black fitted blazer on top.

Travelling is a good excuse to shop PERIOD!
Don't pack anything

pack your 4 favorite outfits! wear stretchy pants and a comfy top and sweater on the plane. i find that the most space efficient way to pack clothes is to roll them up, they won't crease that way either ^^. and since you're going to a shopping haven :woot: , bring along a big collapsable duffelbag that you can stuff into your suitcase and put all your new loot into that bag when you head back home. have fun!

I too am always cold in the plane, so I always bring my J+M Davidson sweater coat in red (you can buy them at Net-a-porter.com)... I love wrapping myself up in it, like a blanket, but more stylish! I pair these with dark blue jeans, a black or white T-shirt, and flats or stylish sneakers, and sunglasses + iPOD.

For NYC, I suggest bringing:
1. dark blue jeans -- more versatile than the pale blue cuz looks dressier at night when paired with a fancy top
2. black skirt (not too short, not too long)
3. black pants -- if it's too cold to wear the skirt
3. 1-2 fancy tops (I love Sass+Bide) -- can dress up with the black skirt, or go more casual/funky with the jeans
4. 1-2 cardigans (I love Anthropologie) -- can throw over your fancy tops
5. a thick wool sweater -- just in case it gets too cold
6. shoes! -- classic pumps, fancy sandals, flats, boots, sneakers
7. bags -- a clutch to go out at night, a small day bag (balenciaga is perfect), and a larger tote to bring on the plane
8. jewelry -- you can totally change the way you look by changing your jewelry
9. pretty underwear
10. pajamas
11. socks
12. make-up and toiletries
13. don't forget your camera!

oh, and your halloween costume of course! have fun while you're here!!!

(here's the J+M Davidson sweater coat I was talking about -- I LOVE THIS. Great investment as I can throw it over anything and everything -- and I do!)

Just put on whatever you feel most comfortable in. And by that I don't mean sweatshirt and sneackers, but an outfit you feel most confident and good in.

    :buzz: OMG i love that coat!! $518 though... AND they're sold out of my size

ahh yes, but worth every penny.

i have wool jersey cropped pants from cdg-as comfy as sweats...but more stylish...
a long slv t cashemere sweater tied around my neck...(i put it on once on the plane)
i usually wear my yohji wrestling shoes on the plane...cause they are completely rubber and security leaves me alone...i never have to take off my shoes...and they are comfy to run around the ariport in...

then i bring a cashmere wrap with me so i don;t have to use the scary blanket on the plane..plus it comes in handy if the nights get cooler... :flower:

thinking it might be pretty chilly in london this time of year...worried about packing...

I'm flying home this weekend, so I face somewhat the same dillema

Sadly... I wear for comfort, and comfort only when I fly.. I suppose this time may be different because once I arrive home I'm meeting up for a bite to eat and drinks.

But for New York in the fall, for four days... a blazer or two is a must, and a couple of sweaters. Pack ONE jacket or coat that will go with everything that you're wearing.. and the same with the shoes/boots, try to downgrade those. That's always wear I have a problem... I always like to pack several pairs, and those take up more space than anything!

great coat... :flower:

That is a beautiful coat! I  red coats. I just bought a cashmere/wool red peacoat that I will definitly be wearing for my trip.

Tomorrow I'm going shopping for a new handbag. And a cream colored cashmere scarf with silk ribbons at the end. And some new black silk stockings. And I definitly need some jewelry to go with my new black sheath dress. And I think I need to curb my shopping habits. Going broke BEFORE I get to NYC does me no good! :ninja:

Hmm... I think I'm going to be packing and repacking a few times, trying to decide what I'll be wearing. The hardest part will definitly be not bringing a million pair of shoes. Shoes are the hardest things to pack. They are so oddly shaped and take up a ton of room. But I like to have OPTIONS when it comes to shoes. Sadly, one or two pairs just does not suffice.

Oh, and here's a question for all you NYC'ers. We're going out to dinner at some fancy Italian place. I was going to wear my black sheath dress (the most magic dress, I swear. You put it on and are instantly transformed into some subtely sexy thinner you. but without showing a ton of leg or cleavage B) ) with silk black stockings, black stilleto pumps and a satin black clutch with a silver horse bit on it. And minimal eye make up, and red lipstick. But is that too much black? Should I swap the pumps for a different color? Or maybe a different handbag? Or is the outfit fine? I want to look classy, but when is black too much black?

Your outfit, although sounds classy, is way too much black, IMO. I think you should throw different colored shoes in there, or a different colored bag, or some colorful jeweled brooches... or all three! And don't forget a coat, sweater, or cashmere wrap, as it is getting very chilly at night here.

Yeah, I agree. I'm going to wear some pale pink pumps, and I just bought a delicate cardigon/wrap sweater thing to wear over the dress. And I can also wear it on the plane to stay warm.

I also bought an outfit to wear on the plane, and the most beautiful bright red croc tote. I'm so in love with it! I didn't really NEED it, since I already have 3 different totes, but the price was just so amazing, I would have been crazy to pass it up.

On the plane I'm wearing a black off the shoulder jersey knit shirt, long sleeved, super comfy paperdenimandcloth jeans, and some black shearling UGG style boots. I was really against UGGS, but they are so warm and comfy, wich is really important when surviving Minnesota winters.

yeah it is getting a bit colder now-toaday i was in a thin-knit v neck with another batwing-sleeve wrap top over it and i was shivering when i was waiting for a taxi.

its always good to punch up to much black with some red..like red shoes and a red clutch (my favorite!)
have fun in NYC!

Lovespell,

i'm glad you changed your mind and opted out of the all black thing. I think black everything is too much over kill.

When i travel back to see my parents, I dress extremely comfy on the plane. Usually its jeans, tanktop, open blouse on top of tank top, and comfy sneakers. Its way too hot in Texas summers to walk out of the airport in a sweater or whatever, so I'm happy to be in a tank top. why so comfy? The first people I see when I get off the plane are my folks, no need to wow them!

When coming back to Montreal I dress much nicer. (Boyfriend is waiting for me!!) I'll go with some nice dress pants, a cute top, and sandals.

What is in my suitcase is a whole different story!
The best way to pack.

1 Supersized suitcase inside that suitcase you pack a smaller suitcase filled with your clothes. Once you get to your destination and you buy a bunch of new things, that supersized suitcase comes in super handy. When I visit my parents I pack the minimal things to get me through a week, after being there for 2 months, I have two suit cases and a carry on duffle bag filled to the top with stuff!
