I have to say that I am so glad the British don't go in for stuff like Proms. There would probably be some parties but nothing on this kind of scale. Knowing myself as I was when I was in 1996, I would have hated it, but essentially because it would have meant getting out of my Nirvana t-shirt and washing the red veggie dye out of my hair (done in the girls toilets at school in the lunch break - I thought I was so avant-garde )
Anyway, was there anyone who just didn't like this sort of thing? ...did anyone rebel? I know I would have, I hated conformity. Or is it seen as a rights of passage sort of thing, just something that everyone does? ...Is there anyone that wishes it wasn't such a big part of American culture?
