Denim is, after all, America's favorite fabric. I still remember in 1997 or so when most ladies usually wore those polyester bootcut stretch pants. Some ladies today wear these same style pants, but not as many ladies. A twist on these specific pants had some styled pants look more like jeans.
I consider most gauchos and palazzo pants as wide-legged pants. I'm not saying that wide-leg jeans aren't stylish or can't be dressed up in a special way, but it can be pretty tough trying to come up with a great wide-leg jean look. I usually think of palazzo pants in regards to anything wide-leg. Jeans are usually regarded as casual wear in a number of respects. You can have denim pantsuits that look just as classy as a traditional sports suit. Only real way to look great with wide-leg jeans is usually pairing them with some nice shoes. I'm thinking more along the lines of a pointed-toe or round-toe pair of pumps. Almost any kind of boots would also suffice, only as long as they aren't army-like boots. My Peruvian friend at my community college has a pair of red, slingback, platform wedge sandals. She's a short lady, but those red shoes look great on her with some of the bootcut and wide-leg jeans she wears. I found some wide-legged jean trousers online with some wide legs. One such alternative would probably involve something similar to Japan's hakama pants. Yes, I'd be interested in some skirt-like wide-leg jeans that flow like a flared denim skirt, but are and feel like a good pair of wide-leg jeans.
Other than this, wide-leg pants seem to be better to work with and wear with whatever. More sophisticated style would suffice here.
