Yoga

Is it OK to do yoga everyday, or are you supposed to give your body a rest between sessions?

hot yoga

I used to do 'hot yoga' or Bikram yoga all the time, and its great for weightloss if thats what you are after. its got lots of benefits of ordinary yoga but it also helps get out toxins through the sweat and a whole bunch of other things - for me however i had to stop as i have dry skin and not a very hydrated body despite drinking a lot of water so Bikram was too stressful on my body - if u do do it drink lots of water and if u have dry skin its not a good idea.... just remember its nmore stressful than ordinary yoga on the body...

I live near the Triyoga centre in Primrose Hill and during uni holidays I join up for a month and go like twice a day. I think the most amazing thing about yoga (the way I do it anyway) is that you really feel the changes in your body. I mean you barely notice being able to run an extra minute, but being able to stretch so much further than you can do a pose better, is very rewarding. But that said, I love running too!

Okay, just finished reading the thread. This Bikram yoga sounds very interesting, I love the detoxifying part of it. I'm also considering yoga as a way to lose weight. The meditiation part of it is, of course, important to me so I have some peace in my life but weight loss/muscle tone/fitness is definitely a priority.

So, for a 15 year old who's never done yoga before, or fainted before ever (I think I've got good pass-out-resistance or something), would it be wise for me to choose Bikram yoga? Approximately how hot does it actually get in the rooms (in degrees C )? Or should I just begin with Ashtanga, and perhaps move on to Bikram when I'm older/more experienced with yoga?

Thanks in advance :D

When I first started yoga, I did Ashtanga. Bikram is a lot less challenging physically, but then there is the heat factor. So it really depends what you prefer. Today I do both Bikram and Ashtanga. I think you should try out both types, see which one you like. Ashtanga ia highly disciplined, and might take a bit of getting into. But after a few classes you start to really love it and appreciate it. Bikram rooms tend to heat to about 37-40 degrees cel. You will get used to the heat though. Just remember to bring a towel along to class and some water! I don't find Bikram challenging at all anymore. But with Ashtanga there is always some new pose to master. In Bikram it is always the same 40 postures. Where in Australia do you live? I am in Sydney at the moment, and could recommend some great places to practice if you like.

You won't faint!! I have never seen anyone faint.

Yes you can do it every day. I do! Although you should listen to your body. If your muscles are really sore, then perhaps take a rest day. But sometimes going to a class helps relieve sore muscles. I think the more you go the better.

hey i'm in melbourne .. me 2 i have started doin offically Asthanga for about a mth now .. yesh it does get more difficult to do pose .. then one thing i sorta of hate is when i start the class we go tru the breathing execrise .. which to me its a bit boring !!! cant wait to see what its happening to my body ...

I really think you should asap!! I have a feeling that you will love it! ^_^

35-40 degrees? That's it? That isn't that hot at all, actually - it's gotten up to 45 degrees during summer here. Yep, I'm in Sydney. Thankyou

I am interested in trying Yoga, but I am not sure I want to take a class just yet.
I was thinking about trying it at home first. I just want to take it slow, and I am not sure I am comfortable taking a class. What are your suggestions?

I used to do yoga loads... i started doing it as a kid .. my mum got her yoga teacher to record the meditation thing .. and she would play it too me off a tape and get me to do to basic yoga stretches etc. as a kid to get me to sleep. Then i did it seriously when i was 12 - 15 then i gave up as my class stopped but i would love to get back into it.
I find it helps so much with posture and it makes you feel good about your self .. and you get to know your body better how far you can push it etc.
I like yoga alot as its not competitive etc. and i dont like the whole team sport thing either so for me yoga is perfect.

I do ashtanga yoga - I went to classes for 2 years but now I just do it at home - I love how I feel after it, there's really nothing like it

There is nothing better than a morning Salute to the Sun sequence first thing in the morning to give you energy and a great day !

I practice Anusara yoga (which began near where I live currently in TX, and my former instructor was the ex-wife of the founder) and I *LOVE* it. Completely devoted. I was sold to the practice after the first class.

Please be CAREFUL with yoga so you do not have to go through what I had to go just a couple of weeks ago!
I used to preactice Sivananda yoga almost everyday, since almost a year though knowing that my severe shortsightedness does not allow me to do headstands I was avoiding this part of the practice.
Unfortunately my instructor could not understand that and was encouraging me to do headstands anyway.
Two weeks ago I had to undergo a severe eye surgery - my eye retina got detached severeal hours after a yoga session with a headstand :o My eye doctor said that she has already had several such cases after yoga practice when people were really shortsighted but still doing so called "reversed positions/asanas".
So before you even start to think about doing yoga ask your doctor/general practitioner/ etc. and object to anything your instructor wants you to do and you just do not feel like it! I have never liked headstands and because of someone else's indifference I will never be able to see properly with my eye again!
Yoga is only for healthy people. Lots of my freinds who wanted to do some exercises to relieve their spines have serious problems with it now after their yoga practice!
I am actually thinking about suing my yoga school :ninja: :yuk: :innocent:

It's ALWAYS a good idea to consult your doctor before you do anything exercise or diet oriented. I did consult mine (my general doctor and my orofacial specialist) and was lucky enough to have a VERY understanding and VERY patient instructor who understood the problems I have, and that I do my best but I cannot always do things other people can on the first try.

I am so sorry about your eye, though, Sylwiasta - that's terrible!

wow! I've never heard of such a thing happening. I know that I don't like headstands either and when I did classes I just wouldn't do them. And when I did the bridge (is that what it's called - your hands by your head as you lift and arch the back) and I always asked for a spot with that. And when I do it at home I do it on the carpet so I don't slip.
but wow - that's awful what happened with your eye - hope your recovery is smooth at least

i once did bikram yoga for a month during my summer vacation, i must say it felt soooo good to see water dripping all over my body, but my bro-in-law found some articles on the web saying the high temperature in a bikram room will age your skin and even organs, though i am not sure whether there's any proof of it.

the detox effect is sooo great, i got pimples all over my face after the very first class, my coach said that's all the toxins coming out of my body. of course they disappeared after two weeks like nothing has ever happened. i think u are not supposed to do more than three bikram yogas a week, btw.
