Your Nails

I haven't bitten my nails in over 2 weeks! yay, maybe I'll actually break the habit this time. Finally, I can have pretty nails!

I always hear that one should never ever cut one's cuticles (or even let a manicurist do it) but I think it would be a mess if I didn't. I have seen some manicurists use pumice sticks.

Anyone else have this issue? It's the one thing that keeps me from having perfect manicures!

I have one finger where it grows kind of thick so I have cut it off before several times and I have never had a problem.

i have very very short nails always painted black simple and easy and if i stick to the same colour i dont have to take it off justt apply over the top :ninja:

same with my toes.. because i just have them plain and simple i can do it my self..in fact i dont think ive ever had my nails done in a salon :ninja: :(

Don't worry, neither have I! I always do them myself: the removing polish, trimming, filing, getting rid of those pointy bits on sides (think they are called 'hangnails'?), buffing, pushing cuticles back and painting. I've never used a cuticle remover, but I think I should on my toes. Anyway... You don't need to go to a salon to have your nails looking great.

I've always kept my nails short, clean and polished with a sheer shiny pink like Essie's Sugar Daddy. I think nails look best that way.

No, if you know what you're doing, you can do your own manicures.

I'm just not that good at it and I like darker colors. The manicure place I go to is inexpensive and they even keep a set of tools with my name on it. I don't go that often, but just enough to keep things under control. I also find that they can shape my nails in a better squoval than I can.

When I do my nails at home, I use cuticle remover. But no matter what I do (as I wrote above) I can't keep the cuticles away.

For day to day wear my nails are kept at a medium length, either bare or with a light polish. I only tend to use colours when it's a special occasion.

I do my own manicures. I use to go biweekly to do my nails in the salon but it was just to much when I see how easily it is to do it yourself. Do not get it twisted its a must that i go at least once a month for a pedicure.

i learned the best way to keep nails looking healthy is weekly at home manicures..i've had them done at salons and they file too thin and my nails would never grow...over and above that they wouldn't ever grow! i don't eat particularly well but i've found a way to grow nails out without the help of vitamins or anything and my nails would NEVER grow but this worked for me..i do this weekly but aim to do it bi-weekly (beginning and near end of the week)

heres what i do specifically....
-take off my nail polish with acetone remover (from both hands)
-fill up a small tupperware with very warm water and castile soap
-soak nails, use a nail brush, q-tip, or dip my hands very quickly into the water and castile mixture to remove dirt, grime, bacteria, and discoloration then i dry the surface of the nails
-file the tip of the nail to make sure its smooth and wont snag on anything
-and lightly file the surface if i have any potential splits on the edges of the nails- NEVER SEE-SAW over the nail either! can cause thinning of the nails and damage....and if you buff do so rarely because it also weakens nail surface- also don't re-shape nails too much by filling the tip....weakens as well..
-then i dip them in the water and castile mixture again and dry throughly
-then i paint the nails with OPI base polish, than some nude or crazy color of choice but I much perfer french manicure on my hands and feet.
-wave hands in the air to dry throughly before applying another coat

then once hands are dry, i apply aveeno lotion and I also put Vitamin E , on my actual nail and because it helps whiten my nail tips , now only if I can stop bitting my nails if my Pharmacy classes weren't so crazy...

i used to have really long nails but now i keep them short most of the time. i put short length fake nails on last week for a job interview and took them off today and now my nails are peeling and so weak! i usually just wear a bright colour on my nails which i change once or twice a week.

My nails are always kept very short and neat, since I'm very clumsy with longer nails, and they're typically painted in bright, colorful nail polishes. Right now I'm wearing a green apple shade, but I think they're due for a new coat since they've started to grow out.

Mine are always cut not too short, not too long. I hate long nails because I have to type a lot and hate when it clicks and its pretty uncomfortable. I like wearing clear or neutral color nail polish. Right now I'm wearing Essie's Body Language, which is a warm gray color (perfect for fall! ;D)

I have really been meaning to go get my nails done. They are fairly long right now, but I plan to get fake nails. I always thought they were tacky before, but if they are of good quality, not too long, and not crazy I think they can be quite fabulous. I plan on getting white with black or gray tips.

I'm sure this varies hugely by region, but to my eye, super long nails ages people. If I see short chic nails painted any color - that looks modern to me.

There's a girl I work with who always has really long fake red nails. I just think it makes her look out of date. I once asked her about it (because I think she would look fresher without them) and she said she got acrylics so she doesn't bite her real nails.

What do you all think? Is it just that girl?

^I agree about the fake nail thing. They don't look good. But having said that my nails hardly grow, and when they do,I tend to bite them,so I've thought about getting fake nails, but not scary long ones and not scary long red ones!

I have no idea how to dissuade myself from biting them :(

I keep my nails very very short because I have long fingers and it looks sort of witchy if I keep my nails long. Plus I think it's more modern and it seems more hygienic. Natural or nude (opaque) painted nails are my favorite.

i usually get tips but like to keep them short b/c i type a LOT and i hate when the nail gets stuck between the keys .

over the past few wks i've grown the tips out and this morning only got a standard mani/pedi with my first fall color, a really pretty deep red-brown OPI color {kicking myself for not remembering the name}.

i like it!

I've got used to keep my nails short, b/c I played the piano when I was a kid/teenager and it's not allowed to have long nails if you play the piano, so I had to cut them all the time. I try to keep them long now, but every now and then cut them out of blue
I love Orly brand for nails care. Especially their oil for cuticle. Use it every day before I go to bad, and every morning. Helps to keep nails stronger and healthier, plus they grow faster

For those of you who paint your nails: do you ever notice that your nail polish appears to wrinkle where the nail comes off of the nail bed (pink bit)? This happens as my nails grow. I thought it had something to do with the fact that a few of my nails curve less than the others, but the crinkling also happens on one that curves quite a bit. I can't remember when exactly this wrinkling begins, but I rarely keep the polish on for more than five days, maybe seven maximum. Can't stand it when it grows away from the cuticle or starts to recede at the ends. Anyone know anything to prevent it (other than removing nail polish earlier)?

I like my fingernails mid-lenght.Now my fingernails are in this pretty dark plum color that brings out the tanned skin color. And my toenails are in this pretty hot pink color.
