Zhang Ziyi In Memoirs Of A Geisha

I loved the book...I wonder how good the film version is going to be?
When I heard that Ziyi Zhang was going to be in this film I said to myself
"but she's Chinese, not Japanese." I was a bit annoyed when I saw the
cast for this film. Most of them were Chinese and this film is about Japanese Geishas..... Hehehehe...the funny thing is, the auther of the book isn't Japanese, he's white. But I swear as I was reading the book I thought
a Japanese woman wrote it. :D

ok this isn't directed at anyone in particlular..just the general "chinese girl girl playing a Japanese Geisha" thing that's being spoken about on this thread

does it really matter if they are Chinese of Japanese!!!..i think this whole argument that they have to be Japanese to play a Japanese character....is getting pretty lame :innocent:

they are "Japanese characters" ....i stress the word characters....i mean it's only a movie....who cares what they are as long as they portray the character from the book well....the could be African for all I care (actually now that would be a bit stranger looking..much more so than a Chinese girl playing a Japanese Gesiha)
people nowadays can't appreciate a movie for the story line and admire the actors for playing a role very well..
i mean.....is there a rule saying if it's japanese character..you have to be Japanese as well otherwise it's not good enough...

sorry.....i'm having a bad day..lol.....i guess i just needed to vent it on something :flower:

i've read the book 3 times..and everytime i do..it takes me to another world..i imagine these beautiful kimonos and wish i coudl see and feel them in real life

the only trailer i've seen is on the maxfactor ad..the lady who did the make up for the movie..just that gets me so excited..i can't wait to se the fuul trailer..let alone the move

Shouldn't historical fictions be at least in some part accurate?

Anyways, I don't believe this film was butchered as bad a another upcoming film... *cough* Marie Antoinette *cough*

Although,it would have been lovely to see a Japanese actress(like that beautiful girl from "the pillow book" or the actress who played in Kill Bill-the one with the spiked ball)play this role,I do agree this is Hollywood. It's merely a way of telling that story in a accessible manner. Everybody recognises this actress from the Crouching Tiger and Flying Daggers films so it seems logical for the always profit-loving Hollywood.

But directors can be different. One would have not expected that virtually sub-par known,Tilda Swinton, would get the role in Narnia.

well..i'm guessing for the most part it probably is..besides the fact that there is a chinese girl playing a geisha

i have never hanged out for a movie to come out before this one..EVER..i really can't wait to see it..i was totally elated when i heard they were making a movie

why does the print ad for this movie I keep seeing everywhere have a blue-eyed woman pictured?
