i need to get in touch with my hair and i don't want to cut it, because it's taken me so long to grow it out, but what do i do with it?

i love the (nice, ie. no flower power, rockabilly ect. ) 50's and 60's and i need inspiration - someone?

I'm glad to see others looking towards the past for inspiration! The 1960s had some of the neatest hairstyles, though it can be a pain to try and recreate them. Here's some photographs from the 1960s (mostly 1968-69) showing hairstyles for long hair.

1969 updo straight hairstyle
Long hair was partially pulled into a ponytail leaving small tendrils.

1968 long coils hairstyle
Long brunette hair was swept back to the nape and the lengths were coiled into structured curls and decorated with a slide.

1969 updo curls hairstyle
Long hair was pulled up to the crown and wrapped into a curly bun.

1969 long smooth hairstyle
Hair was permed through the top for added height and pulled into a chignon. A hair piece was added on top for extra length and height.

1969 updo smooth hairstyle
Long hair was permed through the top for volume and brushed through, then swept up to the crown and twisted into a bun.

This first one is from 1970, but the hairstyles of 1969-70 were so similar that I felt it could be useful anyway.

1970 blonde long hairstyle
The top section of long blonde hair was brushed back to the occipital bone and secured and the ends were curled, with the lengths brushed through for softness.

#2 i love the second and fourth ones here, i wonder how hard they would be to do.

More inspiration from 1965-69:

perhaps some straight across bangs à la jane birkin ?
you don't have to sacrifice length, and it definitely lends a new feel to your hair entirely.
otherwise, those chanel photos that tigress posted are positively grogeous .
