“It” girl Alexa Chung presented her first collaboration for Madewell on Monday night at the Bowery Hotel surrounded by a sea of friends and hipsters. The collection was as sweet as can be, but not in a saccharine kind of way. The designer showed looks with a Sixties schoolgirl vibe from cute Peter Pan-collared tea frocks and cool denim dresses to shrunken preppy blazers and high-waisted short shorts. According to Chung, it was an effortless venture.
i think that pretty much sums it up...it looks like only alexa can pull of her clothes. none of these girls look good - they look like they are playing dress up with their mom's ill-fitting clothes.
I didn't mean Chanel invented clogs, I'm not stupid, you see. I just mean that Alexa's clogs for Madewell imitate Chanel's design, not rachel comey's .... chloe... ysl... blah-blah-blah...hahha...chanel did NOT invent clogs...
...
and you clearly have not been paying attention cause clogs have been around and trendy for ages before karl picked up on the trend---
try rachel comey...frye...chloe...ysl...etc...etc...etc...
not to mention the 70's, 90's etc etc etc
nymag.comYesterday evening Alexa Chung held a presentation of her fall Madewell line in the Bowery Hotel. Pieces include T-shirts with drawings Alexa did herself, skinny pants cuffed at the hem to reveal polka-dot trim, loose blouses, and boyfriend blazers. Many models also wore socks with sandals paired, more curiously, with super-short snug-fitting velvet shorts. For fall. "A lot of the collection is based on girls in bands, or girls standing side of stage. I felt like they’d be on tour so they wouldn’t mind getting cold," Alexa explained. "I just really liked them so I just made them. I guess they’re not the most practical thing, but if you wear tights with them like I’m wearing them today ... "
Alexa said she was very involved with the design process, and sketched pieces herself. "I was doing the live show every day so I kind of went in a few times after work and I took them in sketches that I’d drawn." But now that her MTV gig is up, she's not sure if she'll stick around New York for summer or go back to London. "I don’t really know. My rent doesn’t end til June," she said. "I’m really **** at future questions. I’ve never been someone that maps out their life plan." But what does she want to do? "This is a question everyone keeps asking me at the moment. I’m quite happy doing what I do now, which is, uh — this designing thing has been amazing." She seems to be gravitating toward a slash job title involving both fashion and television. "Yeah, I know it’s annoying to straddle professions, but I find both stimulating and fun," she said. "And as long as TV still interests me I’d still like to make it. And it’s the same thing with fashion — it’s something I’ve increasingly become fond of."
sundancechannelI’ve always wanted to make my own clothes, so when a friend mentioned to me that I was on the inspiration board at Madewell and introduced me to the team, the collaboration took off really organically from there. The clothing I’ve designed is all very much British ’60s, like cool English girls in bands. A lot of it is inspired by my girl-mates — like Tennessee and Pixie. The whole point for me was to create classic, timeless pieces that could be worked into an existing wardrobe, clothing that can be mixed and matched and has a vintage or familiar feeling. It’s for 20-something girls — which is kind of an awkward time in life fashion-wise, really… it’s when you’re just getting your style together, mixing vintage pieces in with High Street or old favorites and starting to understand what suits you.
modelina.comWalking into Alexa Chung’s Madewell presentation Monday night at the Bowery Hotel was like discovering that piece of clothing you always wished you would find. We’ve loved Alexa’s effortlessly chic looks ever since we girl-crushed her last April, and after following—and borrowing—her style, we couldn’t think of a better pairing than her with Madewell.
And neither could Alexa, apparently. “It was like a dream, really,” Alexa said of her first ever collaboration with the label. “I really love their brand and really like their vision and how relaxed and laid-back it is.”
The presentation followed this same aesthetic, casual yet lively and upbeat, thanks to the live DJ—a friend of Alexa’s—and friendly chatting between the models, Alexa, and several other guests. And it was no surprise the clothes were adorable; tea dresses, stripes, and perfectly layered cardigans and jackets all had that polished vintage feel Alexa channels so well.
As far as casting goes, and with us being model-obsessed, we were curious as to what Alexa looked for in choosing the perfect girls to represent her new line. “Well, I really like girls with long hair, because I have short hair myself, so I really just cast girls I want to be!” We observed, and yes, the majority of the girls did have long hair! But head Madewell designer Kin Lee chimed in to tell us Alexa also wanted her models to be “someone you want to walk up and talk to.”
On our way out, Modelinia was lucky enough to spot Daisy Lowe just in time to have a quick chat with her about her fellow Brit and good friend’s debut line. “I literally want everything!” she gushed. Us too, Daisy. Us too. ~ Kristin White
