Alexander McQueen: After Lee

I think his creative director was Katy England (not sure if she was still with him though), but worked with him since the very beggining and walked the caltwalk with him in several oportunities even at Givenchy.

I think althoug of course his death is an irreplaceable loss, ther is some legacy to live up to, besides him being a great showman, he was a great taylor and his pre collections are always among the most creative ones (probably done by assistants), so maybe there´s still a chance for this brand, it might not be as inspiring and extreme as it was with his founder but respectfull enaugh of its values.

We´ll see.

well, i think it would be great, at least, for his last collection to show in paris fashion week. but this is a very hard subject. i think whatever happens, it will be about money. if gucci thinks they'll lose money, they will make the brand come to an end. the problem is really if there's someone good enough for the job. if there was, why not?

I think fashion has gotten out of hand with all of these collections they're having causing the designers to overwork and it feels that, for some, their creativity is running dry .

Exactly I was reading an article only this morning where someone was explaining only a couple of months before hand that McQueen was telling everyone he was going to quit fashion, because unlike an artist who can have breaks between shows/pieces etc Fashion is relentless and I imagine extremely hard at times to keep up.

Commerce is effecting fashion not because of its tireless hankering for wearable clothes but because it asks to much of creative minds.

Maybe McQueen will become like Balenciaga before Ghesquiere or Chanel before Lagerfeld, not really closed down, not producing any "fashion", but still producing perfume, accessories, "core"/"heritage" items and such.

Yes, I can see the accessories and perfumes being continued, and I'm not sure how I feel, of course it's would ultimately be money-making for the Gucci Group, but on the other hand it is a way for the brand to be continued without destroying it which may happen if they bring in another designer.

It's difficult with Alexander McQueen because it wasn't a "old" brand and because Lee has such particular talent and vision, it's hard to imagine anyone doing it justice. I would much rather see the line not continue than, as someone mentioned, they turn it into an Ungaro or Maison Martin Margiela.

I dont think anyone but McQueen can design his collection
unless there was some1 right next to him taking part in every aspect
of his past collections

Alexander McQueen Collection To Carry On

An inside source within the Gucci Group, that owns majority share in Alexander McQueen (may he rest in peace), told me that they are busy looking to appoint someone from within the company to spearhead the label. Who on Earth can continue the tradition of Alexander McQueen’s long standing reputation as a master technician and visionary?Boy, are those big shoes to fill. Can you imagine the glare of the media on the first collection that is sent down the runway? There has to be a fine line between being respectful and over the top. Anyway you slice it, all eyes will be on that catwalk. My source told me that this decision is being made in part because of the enormous investment that Gucci Group made in Alexander’s label. The intention is to resurrect the brand, though he is still warm in the grave…but you know what I mean, because it would be devastating to the bottom line of the Gucci Group. Oy, that board room must have been cozy.

I pity whoever takes over.

i know right.
This whole situation feels unreal.
Still so sad. I sometimes think i'm crazy and overreacting, but seeing people on here feeling pretty much like i do reassures me that im not an alien.

you know if some had to take over i have 3 designers i think can MAYBE pull this off
this is in no particular order

Olivier Theyskens(i heard on another thread he was looking for work)
Richardo Tucci
Alexander Wang
Hussein Chalayan
or maybe Nicolas Ghesquiere

but they all dont even match up to Mcqueen superior show and craftsmanship

I'd like to see the team showcase the last collection and then shut the label down, but calculators will decide that, rather than conscience. If the owners can reap cold hard cash from the name, then continue they will.

In an ideal world, the name of McQueen would continue in a way which would allow us to remember his work as it was, and in terms of the future, perhaps as some sort of legacy that helps new designers find their own way forward.

But no-one will be surprised if his name takes the form of department store perfume and accessory concessions marketed more heavily than ever before. The Gucci Group's got to get a return on that investment regardless of whether the designer is still there or not.

Oliver would drive the label into bankruptcy in no time.

Nicolas Ghesquire is just too different, he's too modest for a something like Alexander McQueen.

Alexander Wang    Let's not even go there; his collections are nappies next to McQueen.

Tisci and Hussein C are the only possible candidates from your list and even they don't feel right.

Both situations are bad to me.
Closing the brand he worked so hard on & putting all these people out of the job I am sure isn't what McQueen would want himself BUT I don't think anyone could do his line like him but WE NEVER KNOW! This assistant could be the answer. I kinda feel they should give the company a chance then if it doesn't work out just let it go or even just keep the McQ line and the accessory line going and just get rid of the main line....?

And the remaining creative ones get driven to bankruptcy...

You are so right .
I don't know, but I feel like there needs to be some type of revolution to stop this madness before it claims another life . It's horrible that McQueen succumbed to so much pressure, but maybe this will shine some light on the abnormal and unreal state the fashion industry is currently in . There needs to be a new way of thinking and functioning . Something has to be done, but I don't know what .

LOL!, Right about Wang
i guess the best way to go is with in the house, his design team has been with him long enough to know his esthetic most of his skill set

^ I agree with you maxlinden. They are the only possible ones. No one could ever replace McQueen, we all know that. If someone does, it just won't be the same

I think they should at least have one last show in honor of him.

A tribute to him and his great work.

Theyskens is a good choice, but at the same time something about it feels odd seeing I group them in the same age bracket and I don't think he would be so passionate about honouring McQueen's vision .

If they were to continue, they would need someone that is fresh out of design school, but with a big imagination and an even bigger heart for McQueen's work and legacy . It's going to take someone who will take extreme pride and joy in continuing his work and I don't think that person is visible yet . It will be some unknown .
