Alexander McQueen: After Lee

I'd love to see the latest collection if it's true that it's ready to be presented. I would however not sell any of it. I think that the label should come to a stop as much as I will always be looking forward to his shows. Lee was quite unto himself, I don't think anyone can truly step up to the plate.

Someone right out of design school would be nice, except that I feel many recent graduates (from looking at graduation collections) creativity are a bit contrived and aren't as free spirited as that of McQueen. There was a reason why he bolted out of the pact when he grated from CSM. Now many students entering in CSM seem to look up too much into former graduates like McQueen and Galliano and end up just re-interpreting archival works instead of pushing their own creativity.

Someone in his team would be a fantastic choice, like many already mentioned, since only they can understand the inner brain of the brand.

like many others, i wish they would show the very last collection he worked on. it would be a waste to just keep it a secret after all that hard work he put in for the past months.

but i do think they should close the house down, at least for now. it would be an insult to mcqueen to re-assign another designer so soon after his death. he is irreplaceable and i can't think of anyone who can think like he does.
i also remember reading an interview a long while back where he stated that after his death he wish his brand with stop completely. but dont know what he thought recently though cause the interview was a while back.

Hum ... in order to continue Lee's legacy a FIERCE pattern-maker is more than necessary ... imho, the only designer who could have those MAD skills is Galliano .. and he has my vote of confidence to pull off a decent collection for Alexander McQueen the label ...

other than him .. I cant think of anyone else .. hopefully we'll see his postumous collection

Wondering how the theme of his up coming show is gonna be like. couldn't be as over the top as the man create himself.

you know if some had to take over i have 3 designers i think can MAYBE pull this off
this is in no particular order

Olivier Theyskens(i heard on another thread he was looking for work)
Richardo Tucci
Alexander Wang
Hussein Chalayan
or maybe Nicolas Ghesquiere

but they all dont even match up to Mcqueen superior show and craftsmanship

Alexander Wang. Alexander Wang???!? You gotta be kidding me. Why, because they have the same first name?:yuk:

Yeah Galliano (to me) seems like a better fit especially in terms of tailoring, but since he's already doing Dior AND Galliano, there's no way he would take on a third.

Wang would be a joke.

It's funny how that "magical" quality of McQueen is what set him apart and caused him to rise so fast, and yet could ultimately be his demise as there is just nobody to replace him (with other fashion houses-YSL, Chanel, Gucci, etc, there always seemed to be someone "close enough" to fit the needs of the label).

You'd think Gucci would want to show the final collection. Whether or not the label closes, it will be the last collection done by Lee himself. Collectors and haute couture enthusiasts will go crazy for it. I truly, TRULY hope they do though. Even if it's a really low-budget no frills show-it would be a tragedy to see his final pieces go to waste.

Theyskens is a good choice, but at the same time something about it feels odd seeing I group them in the same age bracket and I don't think he would be so passionate about honouring McQueen's vision .

If they were to continue, they would need someone that is fresh out of design school, but with a big imagination and an even bigger heart for McQueen's work and legacy . It's going to take someone who will take extreme pride and joy in continuing his work and I don't think that person is visible yet . It will be some unknown .

I agree, that if Gucci were to have anyone, it should be an unknown, or the assistant. But to appoint someone so quickly to save the bottom line will be a disaster to say the least, because that decision will boomerang so fast right back to their face. No one is gonna buy Mcqueen when there is no McQueen, I'm sorry. it's way too soon, the wounds are still fresh.

I still vote for folding on the house.

Alexander Wang. Alexander Wang???!? You gotta be kidding me. Why, because they have the same first name?:yuk:

no i said Wang because he one of the best new talents in the Industry with a similar style(if i dare to say so), regardless of his tragic reviews for his FW 2010 collections he's still a good designer

but I mostly added his name to the list to solicit a descussion on which designers could take over. I know his name would strike a nerve

^^ With all due respect, Wang and McQueen are on opposite sides of the spectrum. McQueen would never put out what Wang puts out on a regular basis, slouchy crop tops, and sweats with a couple leather pieces. Wang's muse is an off duty model. McQueen is far to deep to look to an off duty model as a reference point for his brand like Wang did.

^Ok, Im not even gonna comment on this. But let's just say Wang and McQueen are in completely different dimensions.

Comparing Wang and McQueen is like comparing Katherine Hepburn to Megan Fox.

Most up and coming designers these days are more so like stylists than actual "designers". Wang's basic clothes could easily be found in many other New York designers such as Rag & Bone.

Honestly, Wang is a bunch of crap. I don't care, I just don't, he is awful. And I agree with everyone else. They need an unknown or someone from the design team. What they should do is one collection (after FW 10) in all black(or just darker colors in honor) , and just see how it goes. No face to the designer, just a test run, get reactions. If we get slightly good reactions, continue, give a face to the designer. If not, stop, and maybe just do perfume and accessories(I cant even believe I just typed that). I'm still in shock though. I keep thinking it's just a joke and that he will take a final bow, but then I realize that he took his litteral final bow and that really hurts. And something is soooo brewing in this industry right know. We need a serious, serious change b/c. this is soooo nuts.

Comparing Wang to McQueen isn't even comparing apples to oranges, it is like comparing apples to a lamp.

why is Wang in the conversation, his style couldn't be more different than McQueen's.

So, avoiding the whole Wang thing, but what's interesting about a possible new designer coming on is that if they're going to appoint anyone with a name already in the industry (the unlikely Theyskens/Ghesquière/Tisci/etc ideas), they're choosing one of his competitors. Has this ever happened before?

In my opinion, they should close the house entirely and transfer employees, resources, office space, and whatever else to another Gucci brand. I've never really understood why it's cool to have new designers at old fashion houses. (Though I get the fact that it's good business sense.) When a good artist dies, the art is able to remain relevant without someone constantly trying to keep interest with new work. There should be some way for fashion to be able to do the same thing.

 I love you. The Hepburn vs. Fox comparison definitely fits, I'm so using this in the future.

Already said it once might as well say it again I would lose my faith in the fashion industry as an artistic not purely commercial organism if McQueen was taken over by a different designer. Its all about money in this case and that is not a good thing. I think an exception could be made if McQueen willed his company to continue under a designer he already approved but I doubt that has/would happen.
