Alexander McQueen : pre-2000

God its so severe! I love every piece of it, the tailoring is so immaculate you wonder how it can be done so well. The leather pieces are amazing.

Ive never liked Alexander McQueen, ive never seen the attraction to his clothes, i always thought they looked a bit tacky and unfinished in some cases... HOWEVER, thats until I saw his collection for A/W 09, and i LOVE it, its so over the top and theatrical, but in a good way, i realise this is pretty much what he does, but to me this collection seemed to do it with so much more class and every look on the catwalk looked finished and styled perfectly and just seemed to have more behind it.
But it doesn't seem to have influenced me to appreciate any of his work before this. I should probably revisit them, see if i can understand his work. Like the A/W97 show above... Can't stand it!
Just my opinion I guess.

McQueen's Fall 1997 Collection apparently had the most technically complex runway in fashion history.

^well of it's time i think it was the first that used the entire space of the venue and involved a lot of choreography as there was a lot of walks to take.

but i would say his shining collection of which he enclosed the showing space with plexiglass and covered the catwalk with fake snow was more complex and that involved even more choreography and theatrics.

^ I think the title for F/W 97 was "It's a jungle in here"....but don't quote me on that cause I can't even remember where I heard that. :P

In all honesty, that collection isn't one of my favorites from him, though I do like it a bit better now than I did back when I first saw it. I don't know what it is about it that just doesn't impress me. Still, I wouldn't be opposed to owning one of those coats with the religious painting inserts.

^^I agree, Spike. I honestly don't like FW 97 that much. There are certainly pieces I think are beautiful, but on the whole, it's a bit...tacky at times?

But I do love those religious painting blazers and coats, as well.

i dunno i love this one and maybe because it's a bit more the unabashedly experimental mcqueen with something to say. as far as the clothes,i really love the materials and mix of texture. the acid splash denims, the patch-worky aspects with the cow skins and religious imagery...and then the sharp cut and the more severe pouf shoulders.

Mcqueen is honestly one of my all-time favorites, but he certainly isn't without flaw. Some of his collections, to me, can be described as creativity at it's very finest, while others can seem a bit try-hard and forced. Sometimes there is just too much going on and the collection just has a feel of trying very hard to make a statement- any statement, but you're not actually sure what that statement is. Sometimes I don't even think he's sure what that statement is.

With that said, I preffer one of his very worst, "tackiest", overdone collections over a bland and effortless one any day.

Thanks for the thread! It's great to be able to look back on all of these.

Even though some outfits of his can easily be branded as ridiculous, his creativity is quite profound. I'm always impressed with his work even though it doesn't quite fit my taste.

I took some photographs of images from a library book I borrowed.
