All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

... Though to add it's a cumulation of other aspects eg uni/retail job/etc etc. You can always make the experience you have now fit most jobs/internships you're applying to.

for those of you who have interned at magazine or are interning at a magazine, was that the first place you interned or did you intern somewhere else prior to the magazine internship?

I'm interning at a huge fashion bible this spring, and my only prior internship was at Gucci PR.

^I just finished my internship at the German branch of a big international magazine and had no previous editorial experiences.

I did work in high-end retail beside my studies though.

Anyone heard anything about internships at Net-a-Porter?

This girl i know applied for an internship with them and got it, I think it's a summer placement this year and she applied ages ago by contacting someone of their website i think. She studies history and still in university...don't have a clue how she knew about it but from what I heard it's not a too strenuating process and you don't need any contacts like some other companies do. Best bet is finding some contact info for anyone in relation to net a porter then asking them how you go about the process, i'm sure there are opportunities open every year though.

Oh Netaporter would be a great place to intern!

I'm in Paris now on holidays (been here for a week, leaving tomorrow) and I really like it, I would love to intern/work here next holidays (I have 2 more years left of uni) but it seems like a pipe dream :( My French is still only like intermediate perhaps advanced level, no way is it fluent :(

Theres info on the website about internships, it says they are looking for people to start in January. I'd like a summer one but I didn't think they were accepting cvs yet...perhaps I'll just e-mail them now :p

I asked Rodarte is they had an internship starting this summer...they responded saying that they'll check! Fingers crossed I get the job!

Net-a-porter is great!

I'm a history major and what I did to start securing internships is going around the conventional route and emailing whatever contact I could find on websites that seemed most pertinent. I put myself out there, got heaps of no's, and a lot of no responses, but the few who did reply have been fantastic. Honestly, it showed I cared more than the average person who just wants a job in fashion, it showed I had passion. I addressed each place I emailed personally as to why I wanted the position and what I felt their brand stood for and how I could embody that even without the credentials some of my colleagues coming from FIT or PARSONS had.

The response was overwhelming nice from those who did reply and I have a few offers outstanding for some major houses as a history major from Colorado in pr, marketing, and assistants. :]

ALSO. Start applying for your work visa as SOON as you think you might want to work abroad. It can take almost a year to get one, so if you're an American looking to go abroad: the sooner, the better.

If you worry about your language level, don`t! A friend of mine got a spot at the Céline accessories studio and his French is not fluent at all. But since everyone working there is from all over the world anyways, they tend to speak more English among the co-workers.

Keep my fingers crossed for the Rodarte internship, dior_couture!

Thanks for the info Knightly :)

When contacting people how...formal(?) should you be? The last time I actually wrote to someone about work/experience was when I was 14 and applying for a job at a fabric store..haha!

Hi, I wanted to know if LVMH have internships for people interested in the marketing and finance side of things? The reason I am asking is because when I start college in the fall I will be majoring in International Business, but I don't know if I want to focus on marketing or finance. Thanks in advance.

^Check lvmh.com, they have the best applying system when it comes to internships, IMHO.

Go to "LVMH and you", then to "Join LVMH" and finally to "Job Openings", where you`ll find postings for internships in all areas!

You can directly apply online and it doesn`t take too long until you get an answer!

This might be a stupid question... well, there is no stupid questions, but uhhmm... let's say I wanted an internship at a modelling agency, (I called every modelling agency in the NYC area, and I have all the info I need), I wanna know if my departure from FIT this semester will affect the possibility of me getting an internship at all. I mean, I'm fairly interested in model booking, and all I really wanna know is if (the stupid part) you need to be in school to receive an internship position.

Is it possible to intern as a non-college student?
