All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

^^Do you mean now is the time to send in a resume or now is the time to actually intern with them?

Well modeling agencies are one thing, because there are some models that are coming from another country so there's preparation for them among other things agents have to do during this time. So I recommend being now that there are models roaming the streets for Fashion week, call all the model agencies instead of sending in a resume ( or you might want to do both) and tell them that you are interested in being an intern and you understand fashion week in close by and would like to help anyway.

That's just my thought;)

I hate that all the good internships are in New York! I'll be in California in the summer, but so far I haven't heard anything about internships in Los Angeles :(

diorable I am not too sure about the minors to lease sublets, I guess just try to look to see what's available and right for you.

paperbag if you are interested in magazine internships in Cali sometimes certain magazine such as Teen Vogue has a west coast office in LA. Try scanning through the mastheads of some of your favorite magazines to see if they have a west coast editor and contact them.

That's just my thought

Thank you for the information! I'm obsessed with looking at the mast head, but how do you contact the editor? Do they have an email/address listed? Sometimes it says to mail them for subscription queries, but that's about it

However there's a main number to contact the company which will lead you to the recepetionist and the receptionist can help you find whoever you need in the building. I went through this when I forgot the last four extension numbers for an editor at a Conde Nast magazine.

But here are the email formats for the magazine publishing companies:
Bauer [email protected]
Condé Nast [email protected]
Hachette [email protected]
Hearst [email protected]
Meredith [email protected]
Rodale [email protected]
RD [email protected]
Time Inc [email protected]
Bonnier Corp [email protected]

I hope this help;)

Thank you very much! Karma for you

paperbag, also look at old internship listings on sites like freefashioninternships.com and ed2010.com and using them as well. I got quite a few replies back (with interview offers too) using the details from them. Good luck!

Ok now it's my turn to ask a question :p

Does anyone have any contacts to companies like Barneys or Bergdorf Goodman (specifically interested in something like the financial or buying)? I understand there's a general HR/careers email but even if I got it to some entry level assistant so I can at least be a little bit more confident that my application will be read :p And does anyone know anything about these sort of internships? :D Thank you! :flower:

If you can't find contacts, Cicciolina ... try calling the company's operator and asking for the names of the people who are managers in those departments. Or, look on their corporate web sites, you'll have to dig through to find some names but you'll certainly get the top officers listed and maybe department heads.. Then you can call and talk to their assistants and ask them for some other names of people in the departments that you are interested in. Often you can get helpful information from assistants and then at least you have a name to send a resume to ... and you can circumvent HR. The boss will probably hand the resume right back to HR ... but if it has his name on the cover letter, they might think that he knows you and may give it a bit more interest. An old trick in the business world. Sometimes it works.

^ Eurofashionjunki- thanks for that link! I think I'll will contact them too even though I haven't found a position yet. I hope they aren't all full already *crossing fingers*.

And I have a question. What is a "sales" internship? I see it in listings often and was wondering what that means. Is it just being a sales associate for free? That sounds like kind of a scam if so because you can get paying sales jobs without much difficulty. If it means something else please share. Maybe it involves merchandising or buying responsibilities? I don't think I'm personally interested in those since I'm more interested in the creative side than the business side of fashion but I'd like to know all the same. TIA.:flower:

I wpould interpret that the exactly same way you do, pink.

Merchandising and buying are not consider sales at all ... so unless they are just using the wrong word ... I'd say it's jiust retail sales. And you are right ... if you are half way presentable and reasonably intellegent, getting a reltail sales job is fairly easy and it's not very complicated, either. No need to intern.

However, it occurs to me that maybe it's in a showroom ... which is sales to retailers. That might be a very helpful internship.

It depends. If it's a retail store/boutique offering sales, it'll be like a sales associate. Like I saw an internship posting for Kirna Zabete which I was a bit confused about which phrased it in this way.

If it's the head office or the more corporate part of the business, from my understanding, it's sort of like an account executive - in that sort of business, being in charge of sales is to take care of the relationship between the company you work for and the retailers who come in and buy the stock for their stores (clients). And yes usually in a showroom. I think it's quite interesting and it'll be a really good introduction to the business. It's encouraging other retailers to have a look at the items, convincing retailers to place larger orders, etc etc.

The Brandon looks good too. There's also the Webster, which is another alternative. Apparently there's another one on the Lower West Side run by the YMCA, but I'm not sure what it's called.

anyone looking for internships in europe?
i know of one in london and one in antwerp. let me know.

This is probably an awkward, maybe inappropriate question, but I just got an offer for an internship(not in the fashion industry) and feel like the payment offer is way below what interns get paid especially in NYC. Was just wondering what the average per hour wage is for most interns in NYC? would really appreciate it. thanks!

Most internships I've seen in online listings or know of from friends who did them were unpaid. Sometimes they pay for lunch ($20 a day or so) and or a metrocard. I think you're lucky it pays at all. Congratulations though on getting on offer!:flower: I try to think of it more as part of my education than part of a job. You pay for credits and don't get paid at school right? But it's still valuable. It makes it not seem so bad...:innocent:

a lot of interns dont actually get paid for their work...i think for the most part many internships (in the fashion industry) are unpaid especially if you are in college...if yours is outside of the industry and youre getting paid though I would still take it...esp. if its an internship youve wanted for a long time

pinksatin: well mine will pay a lot less than $20 just a little bit more than half of that. which I think is really low since I'm in the accounting/finance field :( I was hoping to pay my rent for the summer while I'm in NYC but I don't know if I can do that now, I just don't want my parents to pay for my rent since I wanna try the whole independent thing. and I also wanna see if I can afford living in NYC hehe. thanks for the congratulations though :flower:

pout: I really do need the internship. I was just hoping it would've paid more since I'm gonna be working pretty much the same load as an entry level person in that company would. Oh well, I guess beggars can't be choosers?

I was thinking about an internship for quite a while now ... do you think it's helpful to do a job during summer holidays or should I wait till I'm done with school... ? cause I'm only sixteen I have still 2,5 years of school to do ... but I would love to see if working in fashion business is the right thing for my future.
