Hey Drusilla! You still can intern at a fashion house but you can think of something like on the legal side (copyright protection, patents, etc) or in marketing, PR, communications, etc.Drusilla_ said:I need help here... I'm a law student who's on hiatus from college till October, and I'd like to intern at a fashion publication for some time (since I know design firms will have very little use for me), but I have a few questions:
Sending a resume to these places isn't really much different to sending it to other places. As always you need to make what experience you have relevant to wherever you're applying for. There are no hard and fast rules for fashion related internships.a) what kind of resume/CV does one send to places like these? I know it'll probably need to be different from the kind I send to law firms, but what'll they be looking for? Would listing my work experience at law firms be any use?
I'd start asking them about it now. If you're too early, at least they can let you know and you can contact them at a later date. Because you're coming from overseas, you may have to work out things like visa, accommodation, etc, which can take some time. It's hard to make a general statement about how UK companies feel about international interns, but from what I've heard there doesn't seem to be much problem at all.b) how far ahead do I need to apply if I'm in India and want an internship for any length of time between June and October? Are firms/publications in the UK etc ok with their interns coming from a different part of the world, and a non-design-related field?
Again there's no general rule, it's better to approach each company separately and see what they say. There are ways around not doing school credit.c) I can't do this for school credit, and most mags etc seem to insist that their interns need to be people who get credit at school for their work. My school obviously won't grant me that, but are there any places that would be ok with a law student working for them? - fashion journalism is something I'm interested in, but won't get too much of a chance to pursue in India..
Tell them which languages you speak for sure - that's Resume How-to 101. Anyway, I really recommend for you to read this entire thread so you're more familiar with interning. There are some other threads about freelance writing, so it's best to do a search. Good luck!d) failing all that, if I'd like to try freelancing, does anyone know of publications/sites that would be ok with accepting work from someone who's had nothing fashion-related published other than a blog (and I'm not even sure if I want to cite that as evidence of an interest in fashion, or if it'll be acceptable)?
I'm fluent in English, and have some elementray French skills (but I don't know whether to cite those).
