All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

I need help here... I'm a law student who's on hiatus from college till October, and I'd like to intern at a fashion publication for some time (since I know design firms will have very little use for me), but I have a few questions:
Hey Drusilla! You still can intern at a fashion house but you can think of something like on the legal side (copyright protection, patents, etc) or in marketing, PR, communications, etc.
a) what kind of resume/CV does one send to places like these? I know it'll probably need to be different from the kind I send to law firms, but what'll they be looking for? Would listing my work experience at law firms be any use?
Sending a resume to these places isn't really much different to sending it to other places. As always you need to make what experience you have relevant to wherever you're applying for. There are no hard and fast rules for fashion related internships.
b) how far ahead do I need to apply if I'm in India and want an internship for any length of time between June and October? Are firms/publications in the UK etc ok with their interns coming from a different part of the world, and a non-design-related field?
I'd start asking them about it now. If you're too early, at least they can let you know and you can contact them at a later date. Because you're coming from overseas, you may have to work out things like visa, accommodation, etc, which can take some time. It's hard to make a general statement about how UK companies feel about international interns, but from what I've heard there doesn't seem to be much problem at all.
c) I can't do this for school credit, and most mags etc seem to insist that their interns need to be people who get credit at school for their work. My school obviously won't grant me that, but are there any places that would be ok with a law student working for them? - fashion journalism is something I'm interested in, but won't get too much of a chance to pursue in India..
Again there's no general rule, it's better to approach each company separately and see what they say. There are ways around not doing school credit.
d) failing all that, if I'd like to try freelancing, does anyone know of publications/sites that would be ok with accepting work from someone who's had nothing fashion-related published other than a blog (and I'm not even sure if I want to cite that as evidence of an interest in fashion, or if it'll be acceptable)?
I'm fluent in English, and have some elementray French skills (but I don't know whether to cite those).
Tell them which languages you speak for sure - that's Resume How-to 101. Anyway, I really recommend for you to read this entire thread so you're more familiar with interning. There are some other threads about freelance writing, so it's best to do a search. Good luck!

Thanks Ciccolina! Yeah, I called US agencies, specifically New York. Its going good so far, I'll let you know how it turns out :)

How about the Markle or Brandon? Btw did you get into where you applied before? They have already secured summer interns there. Apparently the New Yorker have something similar for students too, but it's co-ed.

Ohh they have already secured summer interns at nyu residence? I applied for it a few days ago, and now I can't log back on I guess maybe that's why then

Can anyone recommend somewhere to stay during the summer besides webster apts. or nyu rez? some of the furnished apts they have when you google furnished apts (furnished quarters etc) are really nice, but a total waste of money when you put it into perspective. any ideas would be great!

There's a thread for housing, rentals, etc. here . You should read that and post your question there ... it would be more on topic in that thread.

pout306, I mean the publication where you applied for summer internship positions have already secured their interns.

Does anyone know of any internships or opportunities for someone in high school?

Be sure to keep and eye on the Networking thread, pinned at the top of this forum. There's numberous internships posted there ... that's sort of our "help wanted" section.

What does this mean? Does it mean already set up more than 6 months or more than one person within the 6 months?

"[FONT=&quot]has already set up some work placements / internships for 6 month periods"

Out of context it's hard to determine what they are talking about. But I would say that the second part means that the internships that they are referring to last for exactly 6 months. Cannot determine how many people may intern at a time but it seems to be plural, so it could be more than one person at any given time period ... or it may mean that the internships are one person at a time, but that internships reoccur on an ongoing basis.

I'm worried. They want to see me, but the lady told me that and I won't find out what they mean until 2 weeks time. I hope it means the first definition you gave me.

hey guys.. can help me in this... well i'm gonna start studying this sept in uk.. well i'm gonna take up optometry as my major.. and i was also planning to do intern .. but i just don't know where to start and how to manage my time???help here,,,!! please!! oh.. sorry about my language..

Vincent Goh it's hard to know how to manage your time until you get more information about the hours you're expected to maintain for uni - contact hours (hours at uni in tutes, lectures, etc) and hours you're meant to dedicate at home.

Not sure about UK, but from what I know subjects like optometry have lots of hours at uni so it may be hard to work an internship around it. It's best to apply to intern once you're more familiar with university.

eurofashionjunki like BetteT I'm not sure but I'm inclined to think they mean that the internship lasts for 6 months. I have no idea about the first bit!

i've found that a lot of magazines offer summer internship programs but i've rarely seen posts for fall or winter programs. do they mostly hire on the summer students to fill other year round internship positions?

it also seems most magazines want individuals who are currently in school/can gain credit for their work. would people done school have the same chance as those in school or are they at a disadvantage?

just curious to see if anyone has something to say about these questions :flower:

thanks!

What are the best ways for aspiring photographers to get valuable internships and experience? I've searched for photography internships with various magazines and it seems they're mainly interested in photoshopping and editing abilities. Should I try to contact photographers themselves or agencies instead?
Thanks in advance.

^ I heard through modelling agencies who provide photographers if you are looking for fashion or commerical photography.

Are you studying photography? Do you have a career advisor to help with internships at your college/school?

Cicciolina, do you know which publications have already secured or are you not allowed to say? And for those publications without official internship postings online, do you just go ahead and apply anyway?

Dear Chloe Girl,
I think it all depends in what city you live in. If you live in NY for example, usually you get hired by season, since they count with a lot of different students that may be interested in the fall, but are going home in the summer, And also students from other states that might be interested in doing an internship only for the summer.
A good website for magazine job openings in the NY area is http://www.ed2010.com/ , i would suggest you to check it out. It has a lot of "off the record" job openings, and maybe you could tap on one before everyone else finds out.
I was living in london, and had an amazing internship, just during the fall period. In the company I was working for, they usually had three interns per year, hence, supporting what I just said, one for the fall, one for the summer and one for the winter.

Good luck in your search!

Als

In addition, I think that your only disadvantage for being out of school is the cost of living in this cities. If you are AT school, you are in a dorm, and your food is mostly paid for.. but if you are out of school, it might be a little bit expensive for you to live, since most of this magazine/fashion internships don't pay a dime,...and thats why they say "we'll give you some credit"....
