All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

OK, so I am back from my NY visit and I have a visual merchandising internship this summer at benetton. (Feels so relieving to have something!) I didn't end up going to yohji because the woman I spoke to wasn't in and I already have the benetton thing.

I also interviewed with someone at brandt publications to intern for the editor's assistant at Antiques magazine. But I don't think I'm really interested. The job involved lots of proofreading, organizing and cataloging their library, fact-checking, archiving, etc. and I honestly don't think I'd be excited to go to work everyday if that were my job.

The funny thing is I went to lunch/got coffee with some of my NY friends and almost everyone knows someone who works at such and such and had more contacts/possible opportunities for me. But I think I will stick to benetton this summer and living in NY will be great for networking to get a better internship for next summer (and of course just to make friends). Plus I will have more experience.

I also toured and visited the Brandon for housing and am basically on the map for a room for the summer but they will have to initiate a personal interview which means I have to go back to NY sometime in April to see them. I wish they could have interviewed me while I was there but that's not how they do it and they don't make exceptions. Oh well, I will do whatever they need me to to get housing. Overall it was a very productive trip.

And what's funny is I found out about the site I found that internship on and the housing from this very thread. Yay! for thefashionspot and all you helpful people on here. :flower:

Does anyone know of any possible internships happening in Miami over the summer? I'll be back home and I'm starting to look for oppurtunities now. :flower:

thanks! Brandon is on west 85th. So it seems like a nice quiet safe neighborhood and they have 24 hr security. I hope I get it too!

pinksatin, you have to interview for Brandon?
I suppose they have different policies depending on your situation...I was accepted immediately without an interview or visit or anything -- I suppose they usually interview for safety reasons though!

Btw congratulations on everything! I LOVE Benetton and I'm so excited for you :].

no one cares if you are a fashion major. art history is perfectly fine.
IF you want to design, you need that design background. for pr/magazines, your major can be whatever. but learn how to write.

^ Thanks! And if anyone is interested in being an intern to the assistant to the editor of Antiques magazine (I guess if you're more interested in art or editorial, the writing, not photos) I can pass you the info for it.

Congratulations pinksatin!

KindlyCuddly internship opportunities in Miami aren't as easy to come by as say New York or even LA, but maybe try contacting a couple of Miami based companies on your own and seeing what happens :)

I actually have 2 questions:

Does NYLON magazine regularly look for interns during different semesters? Also are their any interesting fashion internships in Texas?

Thanks a bunch guys :flower:

nylon def does for fall, spring, & summer. i'd check their masthead & contact which department you want to intern for. if you want to do summer, i'd get in touch with them asap!

You know how when it rains it pours? Well it's not exactly pouring, but since going to NY to do interviews during my SB, I met some new people, with new contacts and possible positions to offer, as well as that same thing but with old friends I hadn't seen in a while, and as we get closer to summer, there are more listings appearing.

But the only time I could go to NY to interview was during my SB so I wanted to snatch something up early. Which is good, but I'm a little bummed about all the new options which I feel that I can't apply for since A.) I can't afford another plane ticket and to miss school to interview and B.) I don't want to back out on something I've agreed to.

Oh well, at least I have something. I should be thankful.

Do you guys think it is wise to use some of the contacts to ask for an informational interview or just to meet the people? I don't want to apply for this summer, but if they know me a little when I apply next year it might make a difference. What do you think?

I think it'll definitely be worth it to do informational interviews! I did some and they really were amazing and they really 'made' my internship (amongst other things - but these were contacts I would not have made without my internship, anyway) and from there it'll help arrange something for the future. If you're interning part time at Bennetton, maybe you can take on a second internship as well (2 days at one, 2-3 days at the other one). It's tough but doable, and it doubles your contacts, experience, as well as give you the experience of what full time work would be like. I did it and I thought it was really worthwhile, but that was because I wanted to make the most of my time there.

hi guys,
I am fashion design graduate from new delhi, India with 2 years of work experience with one of india's reputed fashion designer, Manish arora. I am looking for job oppertunities abroad, preferably UK or Paris.
Wondering if anybody can help me out with some decent options.

ok i'm almost giving up.
I was looking for a summer internship in new york, i've sent tons of CV but none has answered and I highly doubt they ever will.
So i was thinking about an english course or better, a fashion related course but I wasn't able to find anything like that in New York.
(London is my second choice.)
I'm afraid that eventually someone will answer and then it will be too late to find an accomodation as almost every residence hall is already full ;(
I don't have much time since i need to prepare everything to get the visa.
Any advice?
what should i do? wait or apply to some course?? do you know any fashion related course in ny (or london) that do not include design?? something like fashion marketing or buying..?
TIA!

thanks, thank you so much!!I'll let you know if something good comes up!
I don't know why but i can't karma you :(
