All About Internships and Work Experience Placements

Welcome to the Fashion Spot, lbraga412! :flower:

I think that if you can get the internships ... go for it! It's always about learning the biz from the inside out, making connections and building a resume ... and interning is a great foundation for you. Congratulations on being able to get an internship at your age!

Merchandising and buying are about numbers and math in addition to knowing stock, fabric, trends, etc. So make sure your math and accounting skills are good too.

I did an advanced search of the Careers forum for you using keywords, "high (for high school), buying, buyer, merchandising" and found some threads that might interest you ... beyond this one about internships:

Whats the best way to go about becoming a model agent??

Do you have to have some kind of experience?

I'm interested in becoming a model agent but I'm not sure about where to start

I'm currently at university in the UK and my degree is in Marketing and Communications (including advertising and PR). Basically my course requires me to do a years work placement which I have to organise myself with a company/department related to my degree.
I would love to do my placement somewhere i could apply what i'm learning at uni but in the fashion industry.. does anyone have any tips/suggestions/information about what places would potentially take work placement students doing my course?

k i could read this whole thread or just write this : i live in new york and my eventual goal in life is to work at some kindof fashion magazine. i dont care if i answer the phones or am an editor in cheif....(im being fecicious) but i decided that i need to have an internship so that i have experience...im 16. is this humanly possible?

I go to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (a great school by the way) and I am a freshman taking classes in the Fashion Department and I really love to illustrate and take photos of the clothes I make and I wanted to know if anyone has a suggestions of a good way to spend my summer. I really don't mind interning or working or doing something else but I want to find something to keep me busy. The problem is I do not think that I could get an internship as an incoming sophmore. Check out my portfolio if you want its my sig. Ideas would be great I just cant stand spending another summer at home.

I'm canadian and i'm considering getting an internship in New York city next summer. Do I need a work visa or anything else? Since i wouldn't be an employee I wouldn't think so... but can anyone confirm this?

Take a look around this site ... it's the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, which is the department that controls all immigration to the US.

This link talks about student visa's ... and related "Practical Training" which is how an internship would probably be classified (I'm guessing here ... you'd probably have to contact them to verify is an intership qualifies under student visas):

This link is for temporaty visitors for pleasure or business purposes and it also mentions students who are in the US temporarily:

applying to internship help

hello everyone!
I´m a fashion designer from portugal and i´ve only had work experience here.this summer i did a short course on central st martins and now im planning to go abroad to do an internship!
I´m also kind of clueless about the whole process and i have one specific doubt.
i´m planning to send my cv and presentation letter by e-mail and mail and then if they want they will call me up for an interview and to show my portfolio right?
or is it better if i´ll send right away some images from my portfolio together with the cv?
do you have any idea how i can solve this problem? thank you very much.

i hope im doing it right, its the first time im posting here so if im doing anything wrong sorry!

HELP APPLYING TO WORK EXPERIENCE!understand the process

hello!
i hope this is the best way to do it, since i am a very recent tfs user!
i wanted to know if someone can talk to me about their experience in applying to work experience in fashion houses and designers ateliers!
I had experience in my own country but now i plan to go abroad and i have been preparing my portfolio to apply to internships!
I just dont know how the whole process works!
do you send only a cv and presentation letter or should you send your portfolio too right away?
the portfolio should be sent out by mail or is it safer to have a website or something?
should i just send my cv and wait for them to call me for an interview and then take my portfolio?

sorry about all the questions but i´ve been thinking about this for a long time and i got confused!
thank you very much for your help!

Hi Martah, i haven't tried to apply but this is what i would do.
About your questions i can't be sure about what they would want but i'd go to talk with them and ask them for an inteview if that's ok, if not, just say something like, "ok, here's my curriculum/portofolio just in case you change your mine, thank you for you time".

Sorry but i think i'm as confused as you so if anyone knows better it would be really helpful ^^

Oh, and welcome!

Hi andrea! thank you very much for taking time to answer my messy question :)

yeah i understand what you say but i dont know if i am that confortable in leaving my portfolio like that somewhere, i'd have to make a lot of copies and it isnt that easy!
ive arranjed a website that alouds me to post some images of my projects and i will probably send the link along with my cv!do you think its a good idea?

other detail, the thing is that i am trying to apply before i go abroad so im kind of thinking to send emails and letters before trying to actually go to the places, do you think it is impossible to do it like that?

thank you again*:D

Oh, the website it's a really good idea. My mom owns some boutiques and i asked her what would she think if someone'd send her an e-mail with her curriculum and a website as a "portofolio" and she told me that's pretty normal and that she recieves a lot of those kind of mails, "that's what normally people do, but well, it doesn't mean i took a look at the websites". So make sure to write a really good presentation! lol

are there any sites on companies in the area- i dont really want to move too far and want to work within pr/events or anything fashion/creative related but need some contacts! Thanks

Toronto Internships

Hi,
I have to do an internship for college and was wondering if anyone could help me out in how to go abouts in researching and finding internships for magazines and high end retailers. I've tried google-ling but I don't think I've refined the search quite well and I just haven't got want I needed.

So if anyone could help it would be much appreciated :flower:

Thanks!

An Internship is a non-paid job, just for the experience of working in a business that is related to your studies. Sometimes it's calle Work Placement or Work Experience. It is sort of like an apprenticeship ... but it does not last as long. Usually students work for free to get college credit and it is almost necessary if you want to have a career in fashion.

All the information you need to know is somewhere in this thread.

Hii I'm looking for a work placement in London with a magazine of some kind? I've emailed Lula so far as I think Vogue + Elle won't take anyone under 18 and their waiting list is booked up for like 10 years. It's for May and I will be 16 then. Any help or advice would be great! Also, anyone ever done one at a london fashion magazine before and could tell me what sort of thing you do?
