Internship Grants?

I'm interning for FASHION Magazine in Toronto. I live with a roommate and have only just moved out east from Alberta. I am finding it incredibly difficult to work at Starbucks during evenings and weekends just so I can make ends meet to do this unpaid internship.

Are there any possibilities of obtaining funding somehow for these types of internships. I have absolutely no free time because of my two job schedule and it is really starting to get to me.

I want a fashion journalism internship, do you guys have any idea what would the potential job scope be?

And how do I let them know that I want an internship? By emailing their human resource department or something?

And, is 16 too young to ask for an internship or is it alright?

^^Thanks! I'm excited to talk to them! I hope I get the job! I'll have to make some gorgeous things in the meantime to show them!

hey i know this refers wayyy back into the thread, but i was seaching for interning for rodarte and this came up. i was wondering if you knew share what happened after this, are you interning for them now? i go to school in pasadena but i live in the san fernando valley, just fyi.

^^I've still been speaking to them...but I haven't heard from them as far as an intern position yet. I've sent my resume in, and they said they would go through resumes in September, but they just showed their collection, so I'm assuming they're on a break and then they will be going to go through the applicants.

I might send them an email shortly just checking in about the job.

I wanted to get an internship with this specific magazine here but I am not sure who to contact regarding an internship. On their website they have a telephone number listed as well as emails to the Chief Executive Officer, Vice Chairman & Group Publisher, President, Chief Operating Officer, V.P. Fashion + Creative Director, Editorial Director, Chief Internet Officer, Publisher, Editor-in-chief, Design, Circulation, Finance And Administration, Printing And Prepress, and Production.

Sorry that is a long list. So they have all of those people listed but no HR contact... so who do you think I should email regarding an internship or should I just call them and ask? Thanks for any help.

college or be a post-grad to intern at independant mags

I don't think college is for me and I was wondering if you have to be in college or be a post-grad to intern at independant mags in NY that have just started. Anything is helpful..

Does anyone know anyone that has interned at Hussein Chalayan? I am planning my internship year and would really like to know if there are any contacts I can get for applying for a position there.

I also heard that it is literally impossible to intern at Margiela because he doesn't take any interns... Anyone know anything about these two?

Hey guys, I have a few questions:
I have had alot of internships, all of them were in the fashion industry but in different sectors...such as stylist assistant, a showroom intern for a men's apparel line, a production intern for a a high end rtw company, and right now I am a fashion closet intern for a well known mag in nyc. And now I am interested in probably interning for a costume designer or in the wardrobe dept for movies and tv. I do not know really what I want to do but I do know I want be in the fashion industry and I am interested in the creative side of the buisness. So I was wondering would if it looks bad that I have interned at so many different places? Do employeers prefer to see a more focused resume?
And the 2nd part of my question is how would I go about looking for internships with wardrobe depts for major film and production companies? I asked this question in another forum but the thread looks dead (the last post was in '05). I live in nyc but I can only seem to find wardrobe internships in California. Any help/suggestions would be great. Thanx:flower:

I'm not sure if this is the right thread to post this in... sorry if not!

I have a couple of questions and maybe some of you might be able to help me out: I live in Mexico at the moment and I'm a junior in high school. I've always been interested in fashion and persuing a career in the field, but I don't know what I would have to study to be able to get an internship somewhere and climb my way up from there? I was thinking merchandising, and after I graduate maybe I could go to a school in the states and get another degree in fashion merchandising? I just really don't know where or how to start, but I definitely don't want to finish my career here and just get a job in Mexico, because fashion here really does NOT fulfill my expectations. Any suggestions as to where I could get an internship and what I need to get it? Thanks!

Most internships are arranged through your school for credit ... at college level. So where you study is probably the most important factor in getting an internship. So no matter where you study fashion, be sure to find out about thier internship programs. We have lot's of internships posted here at the top of this forum ... but most of them are in NY.

There are a few more threads that you should read on the other topics you mentioned:

Fashion Merchandising ...it's probably not what you think it it ...it's not creative, it's math.

Visual Merchandising / Window Dressing / Display This might be what you are thinking of, if you want to be creative.

Brogue internship grants are an interesting idea however I haven't heard anything about those yet. I can imagine it being quite difficult to obtain (even if they do exist) just because there are soooo many interns out there. There are some places that compensate you for meals and transport at least, but yeah, the majority of us interns are working as wait staff or sales assistants for the time being :(

funkalicious try cold-emailing them. I usually find it more helpful contacting actual editors but other members here have said they've had success with HR department so it's up to you, you can even try both. 16 may be a bit young but it doesn't hurt to try! You could suggest to come in for a week of work experience maybe in your school holidays rather than several days a week (as I'm sure you shouldn't be missing out on school :p ) Good luck!

omgitschristine are there any details for an Editorial Assistant or Editorial Coordinator? As I've found they're the ones hiring interns. If not, anyone in Editorial (you do want to do editorial, right?) and hopefully they'll point you in the right direction.

briones122692 most places only accept college students, however others do accept grad students, however I'm not sure what their policy is on not being a student or a grad to intern... however smaller independent magazines I'm sure will be more flexible. Maybe contact them now to see if you can get an idea of what they're looking for?

Aaliah326 I think it's great that you have that sort of resume! From what I've heard (I'm sure many opinions differ) that they love a wide range of experience, plus it shows that you're willing to put your money where your mouth is (there's nothing worse than hearing someone say they absolutely adore fashion but they're not willing to put the hard work into making it into a career, it's not going to magically appear out of the air!). I'm not sure how you would go about contacting movie/tv costume departments, perhaps have a look at the movie/tv studios and seeing which ones have offices in New York (I'm sure there are heaps - Gossip Girl!) Best of luck and let me know how you go!

I've been looking all through the forums here and I can't find any fashion show job descriptions... (I wasn't sure where to post this question either) But- what do these fashion show jobs entail?

backstage
fashion environment
on-site assistant

Many magazines require college credit just due to the legality aspect of interning (working long hours and not getting paid). I'm sure there are some small start-ups that would not require this, and you would just have to do research.

You definitely want to call a general number and ask. Just say you are inquiring about a potential internship with their magazine, and are not sure who to contact. They will most likely connect you to HR. If you were to contact one of the aforementioned people, you would probably never hear back or not get through.
