Well, I'm not sure I understand your point - what do you call "pretending"? Being interested in someone's work? You don't need to see a model, actor or other artist in person in order to look at their work, discuss achievements, show sympathy or lack of it, etc.

I hope you're not suggesting that such interests require losing your own personality or having identity issues, are you?
