Are stars the new skulls ?

I would feel uneasy trying to put on those Yves Saint Laurent sandals with the star designs if I were a lady. Fear I'd probably cut myself attempting to step into these sandals and walking around.

it's an old pic...
but i thought i'd post it anyway...:P

John_M, I read an article in Time recently giving Masaaki Homma the credit for starting the skulls trend. The article is here: http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,28804,1714683_1714625_1714287,00.html

Personally, I don't like stars or skulls - both are too obviously trendy.

Thanks for linking to the article, but in my opinion I wouldn't exactly credit a skulls trend to Homma and Mastermind Japan. And I wouldn't say that skulls has been a trend in Japan as Japanese high-end streetwear has been obsessed with skulls ever since it's beginning, and skulls are such an integral part of this community. Skulls are a part of their culture. However, I would agree that brands like Number (N)ine, Mastermind Japan, Tsumori Chisato, Undercover etc. all brought skulls back into the spotlight over in the European and American fashion scenes, with designers like Paula Thomas and the endless copies of her scarfs.

Stars and skulls...forgot the trends, either you like it or you don't. I dislike a lot of products with skulls or stars, but I like other products; I find Tsumori Chisato's use of skulls very interesting and creative, I like the artwork and references to tattooing in some of Number (N)ine's prints, and I can like how a product with stars can make a graphic statement in an outfit.

stars are really taking over. not sure if i like it. im kinda sick of all the patterns, want plain stuff.

Around this time ten years ago, the "it" symbol were all of those smiley faces as part of the groovy '70s-type fascination. I could recall all of the clothes femmes (and even some guys) with big smiley faces. Either those, or Mickey Mouse or Tweety. It's just something I thought of as far as symbols go.

Not sure if you like stars, kiiimeluv? Let me make the decision for you- skulls are dead (though skull and crossbones denote evil and/or death), and it's [about] time something better steps in its place. I'm sorry if cute and innocent little Mary down the street can't wear skull clothing looking like a trashy punk rock star. I never understood skulls anyways. "Ooh! Those shoes are cute! I love skulls better than polka dots or hearts!" I didn't get it then, I don't get it now. No need mainstreaming rock or anything along the lines of death or evil. Not everyone listens to Metallica or Nickelback or Avril Lavigne. Why stars? You know how I say that different doesn't always mean better? Well here, different means better. I can easily tolerate stars speaking as a person who loves nighttime and has lots of night-themed art. I don't have very many patterned clothes in my closet, but I know I have no clothes with mean messages or any redundant patterns. I've hated skulls and gladly welcome something different.

I can't be TOO hateful because I have friends of mine who like skulls and have skull art and clothes. I'm just saying I personally don't like skulls. I've been hateful of skulls for the longest. Since these have been the kind of "it" symbol it has become, I've hated them. NEVER liked anything with skulls. A girl I know has some nice low-heel pumps with skulls at the toes. Liked the shoes, hated the skulls. Five-point stars may be a bit tacky, but at least it's better than having to live with seeing skulls. Ditch the skulls (unless you're into hard rock or any variation of hard rock). Save me from having to see the eye doctor and going to brain surgeons to prevent images of skull clothing from getting into my eyes and brain.

I thought of some other places where skulls are acceptable- on custom paint jobs on cars and motorcycles. I wouldn't be excited about skulls, but at least there are better uses for skulls than being on clothes and making me question what makes them even remotely appealing. Skulls are going back to their grave while stars will slowly emerge. And I'll be glad.

I love star print and I hate skull print. What I wouldn't give for one of those Chanel star dresses...

For me skulls is a way of recognizing death so that one remembers to live. It's about not taking life for granted.

ok so i honestly like it a lot!
both skulls and starts
latley ive been feeling very patriotic
and im obsessed with the american flag

karl did it so well at chanel

It's Halloween time. So skulls are going to be back to raise my blood pressure to where I'm borderlining death. I even saw some kids Crocs-like white clogs with a big skull design. Sometimes, even the littlest hint of something I hate automatically turns on my bad side. Seeing a skull in any piece of fashion upsets and sickens me. As far as "recognizing death so that one remembers to live," I'm living. So I don't need to be reminded of death. So how do you explain seeing this skull design only the eyes are shaped like hearts like I've seen on some handbags? I don't care if it is Halloween time- I hate skulls. You overrate them like crap like they're much better of patterns than anything.

...which is why I've been cheering for stars. I'm unlikely to hate on stars like I have for skulls. I love stars as a person. I love watching stars despite being here in the big city. Skulls to me are just the same kind of bubblegum chewing out of punk rock, death, rock, and all other annoying screaming rock music. Only those kinds of folks get a pass for wearing skulls. But the fashionista in high school or a college freshman just only increases my dislike of skulls. I just get sick of skulls that I don't care how anyone defends them.

So long live stars! Let's return skulls to the graveyard and bad movies... where they belong.

I just wanted to revive this thread to say that I've flipped through the latest edition of Lucky Magazine. There were about two of three pages with star design clothing. When I've tried to find some of the different clothes online (including http://www.luckymag.com ), I was unable to find anything from that magazine to share with you all. So all I can say is that if you like star-designed fashion, check out the latest Lucky Magazine.

Among some of the items were:
* a racerback tank with some kind of galaxy design on it
* Betsey Johnson peep-toe pumps with plenty of star designs on it

Below are some links just to stay consistent with star-adorned fashion. They were mostly a result of star-designed fashion when I did a search for "stars" through ShopStyle. Here's a link to more star-adorned garments from my ShopStyle search: < http://www.shopstyle.com/browse?fts=star >.

I love the star-adorned clothing that looks like nighttime or has a nice nighttime look to them. I love the starry night look. At least now you have some perspective as to what's out there now in regards to star prints and designs in fashion.

If I'm on the street I see stars all around
I like them though!

I think they are, but they have to look gothic and chic rather then punky, i never was a fan of the skulls, except the McQueen scarf, that i liked but anything else was too much really.
