Are stars the new skulls ?

I did some reading online about how skulls became popular in the first place. Allow me to report on findings.

You know, smiley faces were the famous symbols ten years ago. This was perhaps due to a trippy '70s vibe in fashion, not to mention Joe Boxer's popularity. Most of the common message tops of the mid-late 1990s had to do with love. Ten to eleven years later, skulls risen in popularity and hate is the commonplace category of casual fashion. I've read online at one site talking about how skulls in fashion were popularized by rock culture. So my deal regarding "Pirates of the Carribbean" is void here. Reading about how rock star influence has popularized skulls into mainstream goes to show what's wrong with America. Selling out to the trashy style of rock music. I NEVER aspire to look like a rock star, let alone be one. I dont' play Guitar Hero. Notice I never use "rock" to mean wearing something (for example, "rocking the Dolce and Gabbana sunglasses"). I never found a skull design I've loved. Much the same way of jeans tucked into boots. I just don't fall into the rock culture as easily as most people who instantly take the bait. I mostly like hip-hop (as hated as it is to people), but I'm not even involved in the culture. I'm not involved in ANY music culture with fashion. And in case you ask, I loathe "Party Like a Rock Star" by the Shop Boys severely.

I know you have a hate post lined up for me completely disagreeing about skulls being unstylish and/or cool. So even more so, I aspire for anything to overtake skulls as the "it" symbol for fashion. I'd love the star designs. I just express that it can be tough to come along with great fashion pieces adorned in stars. As long as the star designs aren't tacky, I see this working very well. In fact, some of my girl friends wear earrings adorned with tiny stars coming down. One of my friends has some star earrings that are green. A VERY cool faculty member for my community college wore some nice blue star earrings this past Wednesday for a karaoke competition at my school. I'm talking about tiny star earrings like these:

I tell you, I love these star earrings women wear. I think this is the best style of five-pointed stars that can be worn anywhere. Earrings like these are the perfect way to show you have sparkling beauty by wearing these lovely earrings. Anything to drive away those who sell out to wearing stuff with skulls or sell out to looking like a rock star or being in certain rock culture is fine with me. Let's work to get skull designs and clothing out of the mainstream and out of our closets. Only those deep into the rock or Goth culture should be wearing skulls. I'd love for stars to stay. Under the right designs and designers, stars can be very stylish for both casual and some formal outfits as well. Who needs skulls when you can sparkle in fashion with stars? If I find any other star jewelry closer to the style of star earrings I've seen at times, I'll be sure to come back to post in this thread.

I bought a DVF a-line skirt with light blue stars on a black background...it looks really nice, as long as it isn't paired with anything that could construe it as "patriotic". :p

I looked online to see what skirt you were talking about. Is this the skirt from Diane Von Furstenberg you were mentioning, : < http://clothing.pricegrabber.com/womens-skirts/m/35450536 > ? If this is the one, it's a very nice skirt. Blue is my favorite color, so I'm sure the blue stars on a black background makes for an exceptional look no matter how you dress these up. That's a very nice skirt if it's the one I'm mentioning in this post.

If the one John posted is the one u bought then I think u made a great choice, it's lovely!

I'm definitely enjoying the stars....I love the YSL stuff (didn't the house do a star theme in the seventies?). But then I'm also really into the whole androgynous YSL thing right now; I'm just loving post-Tom Ford YSL in general.

You're welcome for the compliments, shirleebee. It's a beautiful skirt. How do you dress up this skirt? Do you have a cute top to wear along with some cute sandals or shoes?

Stars are definitely in...I was about sick of skulls and crowns anyway time for something new...hopefully refreshing.

I see it really heavy on the street wear scene , but from some of the pictures posted I can see it is being adapted all over from high designer down to the streets...

Stars S/S 08

Stars were on accessories and used as funky prints on the spring runway.....

Childish? Think again.

I thought it was make-up but when you look closer it's actually blisters, oh is that a bandaid in her toe? Poor model, i guess this what comes out of does wearing really uncomfortable high heeled shoes.

Anyway back to topic, i don't like stars a bit too cheesy for me.

I like stars but if I start to see them everywhere on people in the streets

I would love to wear that black glass YSL top...can't really wear that on the street though....

Wow... I love Japan, love to visit Japan someday, even imagine living in Tokyo. Never realized this Japanese femme started this whole thing. Maybe I get such a bad thought about these skulls here in America because skulls are usually associated with evil or death. And the whole rock and punk culture (which no one complains or despise a damn thing about skulls) really got me over the edge in regards to skulls. I never loved them, never will. I find nothing stylish or cool about skulls, even if there is no specific style to speak of for skulls. I don't do skulls, mean message stuff (not even on my Myspace page), or anything like that. I'll always associate skulls with evil or death no matter who tries to jazz them up in any such way.

Honestly... what's so cool about wearing ANY clothing with skulls? Someone mentioned that stars can be cheesy to wear. However, they are still 100,000 times better than skulls. Let's not make this a case of "I'd rather have skulls than (insert symbol/design here)." Skulls have got to go unless you're truly into the whole rock/punk lifestyle. Even then, you're still going to get many tickets and citations by the fashion police (unless you look really impressive).

whowhatweardaily.com finally joined the discourse on stars :)

One of this season’s notable characteristics is a renewed interest in prints and it seems like everything in stores right now is merrily patterned. While the three most-talked about prints (floral, tribal, and arty) have waged a public battle for the fashion world’s heart, they’re being upstaged by a slightly smaller, but no less significant, style. The powerful print of which we speak is today’s trend report—little stars.

Our eyes first filled with stars when we gazed upon the sparkling runways of Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel. Both of the heavyweight houses showed a veritable galaxy of stars in their spring collections, from star print separates at Chanel to starry shoes at YSL. We’ve noticed that a few famous and fashion-forward ladies are going for a traditional twinkle print. Ashley Olsen wore a Chanel shirt for a Fendi store party in Paris while Nicky Hilton chose Lacey Parker’s Stars Silk Ruffle Slip Dress ($285) for a dinner at Da Silvano in New York. Kate Moss likes little stars so much she incorporated them into her latest collection for Topshop!

Speaking of which, we couldn’t complete this story without mentioning a few pieces from this trend we love, like the Kate Moss for Topshop Star Print Shirt ($70). We adore that it’s in lightweight cotton (still wearable when the weather warms up) and like the soft blue color. Another British retailer, ASOS, is stocking some excellent options like the Mini Star Print Scarf ($21.70), which comes in black or pink, and the Star Print Neck Tie Blouse ($54.20) in black or cream. If these bigger pieces seem to shout the trend, you can try the whisper of smaller starred items. Erica Anenberg’s Star Dangle Earrings ($144) are one little way to get the look or perhaps you’ll like a pair of black-and-white Chucks in Repeat Star Ox ($47). Of course some of you will want the real deal, we’re happy to direct you to the Yves Saint Laurent Star Sandals ($595) and Star Belt ($245)—both are superstar pieces for any wardrobe.
