art is cool ... discuss..

very interesting thread, f/ what i've read.

honestly, i just believe Art should inspire period. Passion is of essence. Any type of art form, things i may not even be into, can be beautiful & "cool", if you will. When i see someone who is truly passionate what they're doing, it inspires me.

passion is a beautiful thing.

likewise on the passion, mchnu^_^
sounds pretty cool gius . . let us know how it goes !
so yes... the class went well.
it was a lot of fun, i can't really describe it in words
it's just melting, scorching, etc fabric to create unusual textures
it reminds me of the crumpled paper-like dress fabric in prada fall 07

two guest speakers
one was one of those pioneers who didn't use respirators and things when playing with these
and the techno fabrics can be toxic when exposed to heat and if inhaled for a long time
so she mentioned to us this textile artist who was back in the day, experimenting with similar materials (or was it resin?) and ended up dying it from it

did a lot of brilliant work
amazing work
good death i think:flower:

interesting i suppose :ninja:
i remember in elementary or high school we would melt wax to do "batik" with no fans going or no wearing of masks
this would not be allowed AT ALL in my class
danger danger*

:P

I think wax is ok we were ok with it in school ... my school got in trouble though with environmental health for leatting us melt plastics etc. in dt. which aprently give off cancerous fumes .. kinda scary

aww glad u had a good day huni

random thort .. what type of art does everyone like ??

i like mostly conceptual art, photgraphy, installation art, i mean oviously im open to all types but generally i prefare these types.

cancerous.. yes, our guest artist was a breast cancer survivor
and she mentioned cancer not running in her family

the wax has fumes as well.. that's what you smell.. i mean for an artist, you might be working with it for -hours- so it's really not good to inhale all of that
oh and another one was Plaster of Paris... all that dusty chalk not good to breathe in :ninja:

type of art..
anything visually appealing
thought provoking

on a school/studies related forum there was a thread with discussion about how art and design subjects in high school are usless and the board should be remove them from the seniorr school curriculum because they dont contribute much to your 'end-of-school university entrance score' (like a-level, sat etc.) and in fact bring down your score (well only if you do not put in required effort into your work - but duh, right?).

basically science nerds were saying art students will not cure cancer, wont save lives, wont solve environmental issues or wont free the innocent and that art cannot and should not be 'studied' as a subejct and is 'usesless' for lack of a better word.

i dont know how people can think like this...
if not for art, where will the vast array of emotions and thoughts you experience daily come from...
people take these things for granted so much.. crazy..

^^ i know people piss me off when they think art is an easy option .. i got to arts school and get stick for it all the time annoys me because they know i get 100 times more work to then them.. also art you cant copy off someone or just copy of the internet like oyu can with academic subjects.. we actually have to do the work !!

It`s hard to tell what art actually is. I mean it`s about how deep you are willing to go. Crazy minds can make everything to art. ( does anyone know Erwin Wurm?? Awesome..^^)

When I paint a picture ( I usually use oil, acrylic colours. But often also all possible materials), I don’t have a plan.
I just sit down and do what comes into my mind. Honestly the result sometimes does not suit me, but making it is a lot of fun.
And maybe some months later I look at those pictures and I start to think about them and suddenly I feel what I felt or what got me to paint that , I start to like them.

You know, I can not get people who need their pictures planed on 3 white papers. That`s a mimicry, it does not have this authentic something anymore. I can`t tell about other works but with mine it`s exactly like that. I often feel like everything has to be perfect, in time, automatic nowadays so I take the freedom to make” mistakes” ( actually what I feel…) and to put it on some huge canvas.

I mean if I fill ballons with colours and throw them against the canvas I can`t plan that, and it becomes beautiful anyway because I put a part of me in it. ( & I don`t mean this: “it`s my picture, it has to be beautiful”..). That something I do really feel in that particular moment.

Give me a white piece of paper and I will draw you something off- the –cuff. It perhaps won`t look too good, but at least I can say I tried and I didn`t diddle. Let the inside go outside.
That is what decollates “good” work from “bad” work. And with bad work I mean heartless work.

So in the end to me it doesn`t really matter if I can say afterwards “yes it looks nice. The yellow fits perfectly into the green. And the lines are straight and just where they have to be.”
This “have to be” annoys me so much.
To me it´s about having done something that really shows me and my feelings. There is no right or wrong because every line is made by me. ( Yes painting with my eyes closed is interesting… I have considered it but I think enjoying the colours doesn`t hurt either. ).
Because feelings are just there and if a perfectly planned picture cant express that then it`s just not that something you need.

Writers usually plan their poems.

today was the last day of my amazingly awesome drawing class
we have an art show tomorrow, i'll take pictures of my work and upload for you all.

yes!! art is definitely not easy.. lots of people at school choose art as a bludge subject and think they'll not have to do much work, but these people will perform really poorly and probably fail the subject  lots of people dont know that alot of work goes into -- planning, reasearch, conceptualising, forming ideas etc. before you even begin to produce a final piece of work. it's takes the maximum amount of effort .. i find i spend more time working on the folio than any other subjects :innocent:

art can be used as a form of therapy too
art therapy
used in prisons, penitentiaries...

to bring back suppressed emotions
find the cause of troubles, etc.

^_^ and that does tie into health overall
can't just nourish the body and leave the mind and heart to die

great topic!

For me, art is always connected with a purpose. It's nothing that happens accidentally.
And art should create some feelings inside of me...good or bad ones, joy or disgust...or it should make me think.

Maybe the most important thing for me is that the existence of art is the most important difference between humans and animals. E.g. animals build nests etc. and humans build houses, too but the difference is that humans have not only the function of the house in mind but also its design/shape/form which animals have not.

So art is inherent in our nature.

i have a question for you guys ... :magic:

when you make an art work or any project,
what do you start with first ?

A . ) The materials

B . ) The process / technique

C . ) The concept / idea

D . ) The finished product in mind

for defantly c.. but being a college student i have to do all the steps in order planing etc pain in the backside .. becuse thats not hwo i work

Hmm usually C, D, A, B.
But I can definitely swap those steps around

Art is cool but artists or students who thinks they're cool because they're doing art is not cool.

Get it?

For me, mainly "C" and "D".
Although, i could, and have started with "A"
Personally, i can visualize the end item pretty well. So i don't sketch ideas.

i don't know how people can think like this either.

if it weren't for art in high school, i might not have made it through.

for people to actually think and believe that art doesn't influence absolutely everything in society.. that's just incredibly ignorant.

before there was anything, language, medicine etc... there was art. people wrote on walls to express their feelings, ideas thoughts.. we translate the things we see into the things that exist today. Even science is an art in its own right. In order for scientists to come up with new medicines to save lives they have to be creative.. not just smart.

one of my professors told me that they did a study in a few prisons that had a high violence rate.. they painted the cafeterias light pink, because light shades of pink are known to have a calming and soothing effect. He had given me a link to an article on it.. but the link is dead now.

I always thought that was a cool little factoid.

i feel sorry for the school that suffers the removal of art from its curriculum

^funny/ironic i was told that that shade of pink also has the reverse effect if you leave them in that room too long :P aggression and violence

Thanks chrisdesigner , mlsnts , snowqueen for answering my question

It's interesting ..
I guess I am the only one who would have to choose B  to start with

I suppose it depends on what kind of artwork it is ...
What kind do you do ?

If I create fabrics
-the focus is on the process
after playing with that
I end up realizing the concept and also the material

Generally I don't start with the end product
but eventually I will make one that is done that way

.
Right now in class we have to create a sculpture with a concept given by the teacher
I find I am sort of stuck most of the time
My mind goes everywhere
and I have to think about the end product
So it's a new experience for me, although debilitating...
